ManyYears

Pros: basic management, gigabit, stackable, jumbo frames

Cons: a bit noisy

Other Thoughts: Its been several years now, in a manufacturing environment and we have had zero problems with this switch. WAHHHH why discontinue I want another. Seems like the GS724TS is the replacement but the price is a bit higher.

Decent switches

Pros: Ok web interface, decent standard snmp support, decent data throughput.

Cons: no console interface - ok as long as you can't blow the switch up via the web interface.

Other Thoughts: For a web managed switch with gige, mini-gbic/sfp ports and 24 ports of gigabit switching, these are a decent value. A pair of these have performed flawlessly for a windows/linux LAN.
I normally deploy enterprise class switches - these are an excellent value for small business/budget needs.

Works great!, but fan is a bit loud.

Pros: I bought this for home use as I keep running out of ports for all my stuff (Skype Phone, HP4000n Printer, All-in-One networked Color printer/scanner, TIVOS, PC's, etc... ).
Price!(with $100 rebate), 24 gigaports, can expand later with modules, all the features you could want, easy to upgrade firmware, and easy to use with web interface.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Wish Netgear would have a Linux version, although it works fine with my Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Linux.

Decent functionality, poor administration

Pros: This switch has a lot of functionality in it for a very low price point.

Cons: The web-based administration interface is S...L...O...W and somewhat unreliable. Some functions are unintuitive to use.

Nice, Fast Switch

Pros: Very easy set up. Much improved speed of data transmission over 10/100.

Cons: True about the loud fan, but we have it in the server room away from people.

Other Thoughts: Could not keep this near desktop. The noise would make you nuts!

Pros: This is a great switch with all of the functionality I was looking for, and at the lowest price. I needed a switch with 802.3ad link aggregation and jumbo frame support - and this was it. The "little brother" of this switch, the GS108T, also has these features but is limited to 2 ling aggregation groups (LAG), and has just 8 ports. The GS724AT has 24 ports and supports 8 LAGs. LAGs can manually set up, or auto configured via LACP.

Cons: As others have mentioned, the fan noise is annoying. The switch was designed to be in a rack, where noise is less of an issue, but it seems many of us (myself included) are using this switch out in the open where noise is more of an issue. Thankfully I found an easy fix - see other thoughts below.

Other Thoughts: You can easily open up the switch - it's just a couple of screws are there are no anti-tampering mechanisms which get in the way. Once opened, the fan connects to the main board via a standard 3 pin plug, which is easily disconnected. It can also be easily plugged back in and reconnected later if you find the switch runs hot without it.

I've been running fanless for several weeks. The switch is barely warm to the touch, and seems to receive sufficient passive cooling if kept in a well ventilated open area. It's nice not having the noise from the fan. A very simple mod, done at one's own risk of course.

Great Switch, Loud Fan

Pros: The switch does in fact have Jumbo Frame support available in the configuration. Newegg shows it does, but Netgear's website does not show one way or the other. Their tech support thought it would, but wasn't 100% certain. After working in the web based configuration, I was able to turn it on.

Cons: The fan is rather loud. I am using this at a home business. I used to have my old 24 port 3Com 10/100 switch close to my computer desk, but this gigabit replacement is far too loud to be out in the open. I had to relocate the switch to the closed and rewire to accommodate it. The fan can barely be heard through the closet door. When in the open office, it sounded close to a hair drier from 10 feet away. It stays cool.....

Other Thoughts: The switch is meant for business use in on a server rack where noise is not an issue. Therefore, I can't deduct eggs for the noise. I wanted the advanced features and reliability of a budget business grade switch, so I picked this one even though it is meant for a server room where noise is not an issue. I purchased two, and they both sound the same, so it wasn't a fluke.

Upgrade the firmware. Mine came with v3.xxx, and Netgear now has a version 4.01 available. It is easy to update with the utility on the enclosed CD. The default password is "Password".

Pros: Excellent performance
Intuitive web interface makes setup a snap
Line speed jumbo frame switching
Rack mount hardware included

Cons: Fan noise, best described as a hair dryer from about 20ft away. Moves a TON of air and so far I haven’t been able to put enough stress on it to make the air blow warm. Doesn’t heat the room up like my old extreme networks or Intel switches.

No POE

Other Thoughts: Great switch overall, you may also consider the HP 1800/24G. You cant go wrong with either.
