Can I have all aspects of windows removed from this laptop and install my own OS (I want to run Linux and dual boot to win 7 ultimate)?  If I do can I receive a discount (approximately 120 dollars) for not having an OS?

Wouldn’t that be amazing! I wish I had that discount, but it comes with what it has. Win10 could be worse than it is. I stripped my Win10 down to the barebones and it works great. For all those Preonstalled Win10 apps, you can run power shell in admin mode.

Uh in the overview it says something about a Cooler Boost 4. Is it built in or do we buy this separately?

Cooler Boost 4 is the marketing term MSI uses to name it's cooler design for the Kaby Lake Generation of CPU's, basically it means the cooler has more heatpipes and more blades on the fans then what the Skylake models had, so in short it's built-in. you aren't going to get nickel and dimed to death needing to buy extra accessories to use the laptop, it will function as designed out of the box.

Can I add an SSD to this later? Is there room?

There is an empty space for PCIe M.2 SSD (80mm) or you can replace the HDD. The laptop comes with a motherboard screw for the PCIe.

Is it VR capable?

Not really no.... look for something with a 1060 of higher with lots of vram for the best vr experience

If I buy this laptop, can I have the HDD stripped of any windows 10 crap?  I want to install my own win 7 ultimate and dual boot to Linux.  Additionally, I want to kill any links to microsoft secure boot as well.

I have mine set to boot to 3 different operating systems right now. You shouldn’t have any problems with it.

Can i add an extra 8 gigs of ram and an SSD?

According to the specs at MSI's site, it has 2 RAM slots with a max of 32gb. The HDD will be a standard laptop size you could replace with an SSD, but doing so might void warranty. I own an older 2014 MSI model and numerous people contacted them and were told that removing the sticker to replace the HDD would NOT, but that doesn't speak for this one.

Is this laptop good for gaming? I am interested in buying a laptop under 1,000$ that is good for gaming. If you have any answers thank you.

depends what Games you play, it's not "VR Capable" but it will handle many of your modern games, if your budget is up to a 1,000, I would suggest pushing just a little more, there are models with a GTX 1060 (preferably the 6GB version) that are good enough for VR around the 1,050-1200 dollar price point depending on sales and rebate offers.

No one solders RAM to Laptops or PC's anymore haven't done for any big brands in 20+ years that I'm aware of. There are two RAM slots SO DIMM DDR4 and it comes with 2400 single 8GB stick installed.
