Great value

Pros: 1) Power management technology is great. Even though the machine has a powerful processor and a gigabyte graphics card, it is still possible to get up to 4-5 hours of battery life through power management. It allows you to limit the processor to a percentage of its capabilities when on battery power, and as soon as you plug the computer in, it switches to full power.
2) nVidia Optimus - On battery power, the Intel chip takes care of basic tasks and standard-def YouTube videos. Switch to the GeForce 310M for high-def video and moderate gaming. The card isn't the best, but it's certainly not lacking for what I use it for.

Cons: 1) Speakers are horrible. They're way too quiet. You can't hear them at all if someone is talking ten feet away. Headphones or external speakers are a must if you're going to be using anything without sound anywhere besides a silent room.
2) Screen has a weird flicker to it when at anything but 100% brightness.
3) Case scratches very easily. I've taken very good care of this laptop, only transporting it in a padded pocket in my backpack, but there are many scratches on the case lid.

Other Thoughts: Overall, for the price it's a great value. I would have preferred a higher-resolution screen (given the dedicated graphics which are capable of displaying beyond full-HD resolution), and that, along with the cons I listed above, prompted me to remove 1 egg.
I've had no problems with reliability so far, and the battery life on average settings consistently averages about 2-3 hours.

K52JC-X2 i5 Review

Pros: The i5 processor can handle quite a bit of workload. The battery life is pretty darn good for a laptop (2-5 hours depending on what your doing). The graphic card is decent for average gaming (don't expect it to run anything on high though). The screen works well in sunlight! (though it has to be a pretty bright day out).

Cons: This computer has more bloatware than it really needs. It becomes quite a hassle uninstalling all of it if you want your system to be more simplistic. The system has 2 graphics cards, which can be confusing to some. The intel based card can be set to run normal programs to save battery life, and you can set the nvidia card to run your games. You cannot make the nvidia card the main card however, which is a con to some. The system also comes with the hard drive partitioned into 2 sections (one for the os, and one for the rest your stuff). Most users probably wouldn't need a partitioned hard drive. The top of the computer is also a high gloss case, which means lots of scratches, but that isn't too big of a deal.

Other Thoughts: Overall this laptop is a pretty good system. It is fast, can handle some gaming, and is an overall good buy. The bloatware is removable, so that isn't a huge deal, but I wish the system would be able to run the nvidia graphics card as the main card, and disable the intel card. My last note on this computer is to burn your recovery discs right away (it does not come with any), and don't forget to register your free accidental warranty.

Upon further review

Pros: Fairly quick and adequate at running newer games, albeit on lower settings (high settings kicked this machines *bleep*). The facial recognition log in is really nice. Built in mic pretty good. Battery life is pretty good.

Cons: The touch pad is junk and a half. Get a usb mouse if you plan on getting this laptop. Most of the time it works just fine but then there are times when it goes crazy and gets incredibly jumpy regardless of how smooth your motions may or may not be. If you use the scroll feature on the pad it might just start jumping around at a very high pace. Does not do any of that ever when using a usb mouse, wired or wireless.

Other Thoughts: For the price its still an ok laptop but I would get one thats a little cheaper and doesnt have the awful video card. I made the assumption the card would allow me at least a bit more performance than just a laptop with onboard graphics but I was wrong. The mouse pad isn't a large problem but considering you might be using the thing all the time it can be a large problem from such a small thing.

Worth every single penny!!

Pros: Looks great, has a numpad, various options for battery backup (when plugged in, and on battery) like the Hybrid Engine, Power4Gear, Nvidia optimus (gotta love this one), multi-touch trackpad ( a la macbook) and it doesnt detect your palm while typing, spacious keys on keyboard (and cant stop using the keyboard, its just so comfy), VERY silent no matter what abuse it takes, fairly good speakers, no slots in the front and safely everything's at the either side (some may feel otherwise).
The gameplay was pretty decent on mid-level graphics in CoD 6. Smooth gameplay, no glitches or lags.
As opposed to some, the wi-fi reception is fine, else u you can uninstall the Boingo Wifi for any trouble.

Cons: WAY too many options to save your battery, is definitely a pain to keep track of 'em (switching all the time when gaming and not), too small arrow keys (may take sometime to get used to), speakers at the bottom (at an angle, but still!!), the multi-touch trackpad is not receptive at ALL times, s**tloads of bloatware.
About being VERY silent, if the environment around you is silent, a slight sound of some sort can be heard beneath the trackpad.
Just one vent for the fan at the left. The heat can be felt when using WASD keys for gaming, rest of the laptop is always cool.

Other Thoughts: A very decent laptop worth buying for casual (and above) gaming and general usage.
I get roughly 3-4 hours worth battery juice at normal settings and using the Optimus tech. to use the on-board graphics for internet surfing and normal offline work. For gaming, its ALWAYS plugged in (just in case).
Other than the bloatware and the minor sound below the trackpad (hoping it stays minor), i'd recommend this to anyone having this laptop in their list of choice!!

Decent mid-range Laptop

Pros: Decently fast computer, been running games like League of Legends while using Fraps with no problems. The keyboard is, for the most part, spacious and easy to type on, but the positioning of the arrow keys takes some getting used to. A full numpad is a great improvement over an old laptop I'd been using that was the same size. The overall laptop finish looks good and doesn't seem cheaply made.

Cons: No huge problems. Shipped with some bloatware that was easily removed. Can get pretty warm during extended gaming sessions, but a simple cooling pad is enough to keep it from getting critical. I don't like how the mouse button is one solid button, as it makes it more difficult to determine if where on the button your finger is without looking.

Overall, nothing bad enough to knock an egg for.

Other Thoughts: A few other things: I didn't like how the harddrive was partitioned, but that was easily fixed. I also prefer using a the sides of the mouse pad to scoll as opposed to the two finger method (which this one uses), and the two finger method sometimes doesn't like to register on the first try.

Overall, I bought this as a replacement for an 5-ish year old Dell laptop. Mostly for gaming. It doesn't eat through games, but it'll definitely get the job done without costing an arm and leg.

Awesome

Pros: This is a great laptop for people who do not want to shell out over a grand on a laptop. I am very surprised that it can actually run Crysis (just not very well) Calculates 1M digits of Pi in 16s. The keyboard is really nice. Each key is cut out so you can easily clean it.

Here are the WEI results:
Processor - 6.8
RAM - 5.9
Graphics - 4.5 (Intel HD Graphics I assume)
Gaming Graphics - 5.7 (NVIDIA 310M I assume)
Hard Drive - 5.9

Cons: No real cons but..

Other Thoughts: The Intel HD graphics takes about 300MB of RAM away from you. This doesn't really matter to me though. Just make sure you use a 64bit OS to get the maximum amount of memory.

I noticed that while typing I sometimes hit the mouse pad and it clicks away from whatever I'm doing. Shouldn't be too hard to get used to.

ASUS split up the 500GB hard drive into 3 partitions. The OS partition is about 100GB (if memory serves me correct), second is the "DATA" partition which is around 350GB and the last partition is the backup partition which is around 20GB.

Overall this is a great laptop, especially coming from a ~4 year old Celeron laptop. Definitely a good buy!

Don't Buy This

Pros: Price, Speed, Color, Size, etc.

Cons: The only con with this machine is sometimes is just does not want to connect to wired or wireless, even if it sees the networks available and there is absolutely no security blocking it. It is NOT a fault with my wireless or wired setup, it is completely random and very difficult to deal with. This is a well-documented issue with ASUS machines, if you google it you'll see plenty. I wish I would have before I made this purchase.

Other Thoughts: Two stars ONLY for all the other great features. If it weren't for the connectivity issues I'd be very happy with this machine. Alas...

Great Laptop

Pros: The Core i5 runs everything I have thrown at it including some low end gaming (Lego Harry Potter) with effects. Runs MS Office 2010 without problem. Plenty of hard disk space, runs cool and quiet
Purchased from New Egg with the usual great service.

Cons: It lags a little when editing 12 Mpixel RAW image files in Adobe LIghtroom but it is still serviceable. Comes with a lot of Asus Utilities that don't add much value. I have unloaded several.
No Linux drivers for the Optimus system.
Other Linux incompatibilities (see below)

Other Thoughts: Has a number of problems with Ubuntu. Many of these have been resolved in the newer kernel. I am running Ubuntu 10.10 Alpha 3 (kernel 2.6.35). This has resovled several issues. The remaining issues have individual fixes available. Search Ubunutu Asus K52 for links to the Ubuntu forum discussion of problems and solutions.
