Low quality laptop

Pros: -It's cheap

Cons: This is simply a poorly made laptop. The one I purchased had constant, 100% disk activity that caused the machine to be sluggish and unusable when it first arrived. I figured I just got unlucky and sent it back for a replacement. The replacement has started doing the exact same thing (2 months later, so I can't return it now).

Other Thoughts: I wish I had never bought this laptop.

Dear John C,

Thank you for your review and I certainly understand the inconvenience this may have caused, and please accept our apologies. All ASUS products undergo intensive quality control testing and inspections, this is a random problem. ASUS provides warranty coverage in order to fix or repair any product that may stop working prematurely under normal usage. Try updating your drivers to the latest version located at ASUS HelpDesk. Also try running disk check via Command Prompt (Admin). If the issues persist, feel free to contact me if you have any technical or general questions. You can reach me at cl-adrian@asus.com. Great Laptop for gaming and photoshop, Bad Customer Service

Pros: I bought this laptop for school at $650 after the instant rebate and promo code offer. It performs well in gaming, so far I've tested Doom and Subnautica and they run really well. The CPU handles image processing really well, too. The laptop has a decent feeling keyboard and a pretty decent screen. The viewing angles can be challenging, but it is a laptop, after all. I liked the performance in gaming but I wanted it to be a bit faster so I upgraded the ram and added a 256gb M.2 SSD. Once I migrated over the OS, it ran like a dream.

Cons: The SSHD that it comes with is absolute garbage and should be a very, very considerable Con when you factor these things into your decision. It's so bad that I thought I had received a DOA laptop because it took SO LONG to boot. After it finally booted, I noticed that the performance was on par with one of those awful "green" drives running at 5400rpm. It's also notably loud. Yes, the hard drive is actually audible. I had forgotten how noisy they were until I was sitting in a quiet room and started hearing the pops and clicks of that dang drive. You basically HAVE to buy an SSD for this computer to really be worth it, which is unfortunate as it adds to the cost. It would have been better if they had just only installed an M.2 SSD that was smaller.

Once I migrated my OS to the new drive, it ran faster.

I also installed a second stick of 8GB of ram a few days after I bought it. I booted it and realized it was only using up 8gb of ram, even though my bios and CPU-Z were recognizing that both slots were seated and it totaled to 16GB. I tried contacting ASUS support after registering my product and I was essentially ghosted. This is when I began to worry as I know ASUS doesn't have the best record of quality customer service. I sent the email with details explaining my situation and to this day have no received a response. I would hate to think what I would do if it was a more serious issue! The laptop is marketed as upgradable and expandable, but once you open it up you void the warranty. Seems a bit underhanded to encourage customers to perform upgrades that would void the warranty, so I began to worry as a week passed and I still hadn't heard from ASUS. I said to hell with it and began trying to find my own fix, goodness knows I wouldn't get it from them. Eventually, after many attempts to fix the issue with the unused ram, I tried swapping the ram slots and it seemed to work. No thanks to ASUS.

The laptop fan control is also pretty unreliable. I turn on turboboost only to have it turn on hours later in the middle of class when the laptop is still cool to the touch. It doesn't work on command and that is really, really frustrating.

There is a serious lack of features in terms of ports, I would have hoped there would be at the very least a SD slot, but the features on this unit are really sparse.

Other Thoughts: All in all, I'm happy with my laptop despite the lack of care or customer service from ASUS after I had just given them ~$700. Shame on you, ASUS.

Really disappointing performance

Pros: - Nice aesthetics

Cons: - Incredibly slow
- Resource-light games with graphics settings all on the lowest settings don't even manage 30fps consistently
- Can't have more than 2 applications running without the whole OS slowing down even more than usual

Other Thoughts: I bought this with the intention of using it for some light gaming and programming while I'm away. This laptop can't do either of those things.
I genuinely can't believe how slow it is. Start-up takes about 4 minutes before any application will open in a usable way. The latest Windows update took several hours to install (same update took less than 15 minutes on my desktop).

Good product but with some incorrect design decisions

Pros: -Good design.
-Good construction quality in General.
-Excellent support on the manufacturer's website.
-Easy updates
-Good performance of the video card.
-It does not bring a lot of pre-installed junk software.
-Cheap for what it brings.
-Free very good games (Age of empires and Gears Of War).
-Excellent ventilation (Even configurable).
-Excellent BIOS.
-Tiny, light and Portable.
-Nice speakers.
-Nice Wifi performance.
- Nice A/C Power adaptor design (Quality and tiny)
- Nice thermal Design (states cool).

Cons: -Firecuda is the worst hoax in the history of technology, this hard drive stands out for being extraordinarily slow, I feel completely deceived with what I thought it was. This hard drive is not only slow, it is even worse than a traditional hard drive. You will notice that this hard drive was not tested in its entirety by its manufacturer, many times it feels buggy with many important software causing the operating system to become inoperative and forcing you to restart windows, you will notice that 50% of the time the hard drive is working 100%, I have a great suspicion that the hard drive causes conflicts with many programs such as winrar, because my old machine with a sad AMD A7-3850 decompresses files in half the time that this machine does with a processor very superior in theory, I have a great suspicion that the hard drive is the cause of most of the problems of instability in the performance that this equipment suffers, you just have to visualize the process manager to realize that the disk works always at 100% even without heavy work. After losing hours and hours in front of this laptop waiting for it to react, I had no choice but to order an SSD.
-Poor battery life, in any configuration.
-Missing SD Port
-Mediocre webcam (Just 1MP in an era in which the most mediocre phones exceed even 8 MP).
-My F1 key came damaged from the factory. (The touch does not feel the same as the rest of the keys, almost does not sink).
-It does not bring software to configure all the devices of the laptop as if it is brought by the competition, something like a command center.
-They could incorporate metal to the chassis.

Good for the Sub-$700 market

Pros: 8th Gen i5
GTX 1050ti
Price

Cons: 25w TDP limit (see other)

Other Thoughts: Got two of these with a MSI GV62 that has the same i5 and a GTX 1060 instead of the 1050ti. I would have gotten 3 MSI's because after the MIR it was the same price, but MSI limited to one per household, so for the price I saw no equivalent to this laptop specs. Any research on this laptop will show reviews and youtube videos of people talking about a 25w TDP limit on the processor making it under perform. When I first got this laptop, this was the case. Using Cinebench R15 the CPU received a score of 462, the MSI in comparison got 711, with the same CPU. After a firmware upgrade, I didn't see a difference until I went to "overboost" mode in windows (FN+F5), this "unlocks" that limit on the CPU and I received proper 720-750 scores in Cinebench. Similar results were seen in 3DMark Timespy. I averaged between 40-50fps on Medium settings in Shadow of the Tomb Raider benchmark (perfectly playable).

The reason for the two star drop is ASUS shot themselves in the foot by releasing this laptop with the TDP limit in place, and when they "fixed" it, there is no information or documentation or anything that informs you that you must enable OverBoost to get full use of your hardware. Also, My kids and I are primary Linux users, we rarely use Windows, and the "fix" for this problem only works in Windows that I can tell so far. Running Phoronix-Test-Suite cpu benchmarks side by side with the MSI shows about half performance again in Linux and none of the Fan Control functions or profiles work. This should really be a setting placed in the BIOS to let us set that mode as default or somehow disable the limit altogether for those of us that don't keep Windows. Advertising an i5-8300 but throttling it to half the available power is just.. icky.

If you are a Windows person, this is more likely a 4-star laptop if you get it at the right price since you can fix the throttle. Most comparable laptops with a 1050ti and 8th gen i5 are $150+ more. Switching to "Overboost" is not that big of a deal, and unlike what I've read from the reviewers it doesn't make your fans spin loud non-stop, only if you're under load, which is fine and expected. Especially considering that, again compared to the MSI, my temperatures are ~10 degrees cooler on this laptop. Maxing out around 90 for the ASUS, and 98 for the MSI which is horrendous. This is in overboost with the TDP limit disabled.

My kids have played the included Gears of War 4, Warhammer 2, Armello and a few others between Linux and Windows and have not expressed any concerns or stuttering issues (not that these are the newest AAA titles or anything), and I ran the Shadow of the Tomb Raider benchmarks which ran fine in both Linux and Windows at Medium settings, which is on par for a 1050ti. You don't notice the CPU bottleneck as much in most games, but again for Windows you can get around it. If they do complain I'll come back and adjust the review but it's unlikely, they are used to 3rd gen i3's or AMD Phenom II cpu's and a GTX 750, so pretty much everything runs better for them than they had, and it saved me $150ish per laptop at least making Christmas less painful on my pocket book (even if they aren't getting full use of their cpu in Linux).

Killer for the price

Pros: This was my first purchase ever made overseas for such expensive product so I was little worried for its customs clearance and handling which was well handed by Newegg via FedEx and the best part was automatic inclusion of such charges in the main price itself. So, I didn't pay any any extra charges to fedEx (other then Visa international transaction surcharge 3.25%)

Now, lets come to the product. This is for sure the best deal I have ever made. This lappy returns every penny spent on it in the form of its performance and specs. Before I bought it, I was worried about its much complained power throttling issues, which didn't bother me after 312 latest BIOS update. Some of its benchmarks are as follows:

Witcher 3 on Ultra high settings 1080p 30-35fps most of the time.

Monster Hunter world on Ultra high 1080p 25-30 fps.

Forza Horizon 3 gives 35-45 fps on ultra high but studders, and that is due to its unoptimized performance for PC.

Resident Evil 7 ultra high 1080p with (shadow cache off and shadows quality to high) between 48 to 60 fps.

Ghost Recon Wildlands blend of high, very high and ultra settings 1080p with constant 30+ fps.

What else I can ask for?

Thank you Asus and Newegg for the offer.

Cons: At least one usb slot could be at right side to connect mouse easily. and laptop's casing could be better and harder.
