ROG Strix SCAR Edition

Built for the sharpest shooters in the meanest gunfights, ROG Strix SCAR Edition is a gaming laptop designed to give you a competitive edge in FPS games like Counter-Strike, Overwatch, and more. Experience the power brought by the 7th Gen Intel Core i7 quad-core processors, and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 graphics card. Coupled with a 120Hz refresh rate IPS display, your gaming experience has never been so smooth and responsive, without any lag or motion blur. Strix SCAR Edition also features desktop-style Aura Sync-enabled keyboard, N-key rollover, and fast-actuating keys, keeping you focus on the maps — so you can take out targets with absolute precision.

FOR TOP FPS MARKSMEN

Taking both its name and design inspiration from the FN SCAR assault rifle, Strix SCAR Edition is designed for top marksmen. Like its namesake, Strix SCAR Edition pairs agility with performance, packing all its lethal firepower into a compact chassis with a thin 2.4cm profile, and an overall weight of just 2.6kg.1 And it looks the part, too — its Gunmetal Grey finish mirrors that of the deadly weapon.

COMBAT-PROVEN COMPUTING POWER2

Strix SCAR Edition is powered by the 7th Generation Intel Core i7-7700HQ quad-core processor and a NVIDIA GTX 1050 graphics card for extreme gaming experience. Cutting-edge storage, such as a 128GB M.2 NVMe PCIe 3.0 x4 SSD and a 1TB Seagate FireCuda SSHD, plus 8GB of DDR4 memory, guarantees superior overall performance. Whichever configuration you choose, Strix SCAR Edition is armed to the teeth, with combat-proven computing power to rule the game.

STAY FOCUSED. TAKE THE SHOT.2

The difference between defeat and victory is measured in fractions of a second. Strix SCAR Edition upgrades your vision, with an IPS-level display with a 120Hz refresh rate deliver smooth, accurate visuals, as well as reduce lag and motion blur. The 300cd/m2 panel ensures 20%-brighter visuals than low-end IPS panels from competitors. Give your aim an upgrade, and sharpen your sights for the crucial moment of the shot.

STAY COOL UNDER FIRE2

Strix SCAR Edition has a specially-designed cooling system that improves airflow and system durability to keep you going during intense gaming sessions. The intelligent thermal design employs three fans that automatically adjust themselves to optimize CPU, GPU, and VRAM performance. Intake vents situated above the keyboard and underside of the chassis improve airflow into the system; while the patented trapezoid-cut lid design doesn’t interfere with the air tunnels and hot exhaust at the rear of the laptop. The patented Anti-Dust Cooling system expels dust particles and dirt to improve system reliability and durability. In addition, the two main fans have been upgraded to 12V and spin much faster than regular 5V fans, boosting airflow and increasing air pressure to improve cooling efficiency — so you’ll keep a cool head even under fire!

ABSOLUTE PRECISION WITH EVERY KEYSTROKE

Strix SCAR Edition puts decisive control at your fingertips, with a brand-new desktop-inspired keyboard layout featuring four hotkeys, four customizable RGB-backlit zones, and ergonomic 0.25mm keycap curves that are comfortable to the touch. ROG-exclusive Overstroke technology enables earlier actuation and a longer over-stroke distance, enabling fast, accurate and effortless keystrokes that increase your actions per minute. Specially highlighted WASD keys and N-key rollover further boost your precision, and with the action guaranteed for 20-million key presses your kill count will just keep on rising!

AURA SYNC FOR ULTIMATE PERSONALIZATION

Aura Sync technology gives you the freedom to customize and sync up light effects with Aura Sync-supported gaming mice, headsets, and other peripherals to give your entire gaming setup a consistent look and feel. With a full spectrum of colors to choose from, as well as seven different lighting modes that can be accessed via the Aura control panel, Aura Sync technology lets you express your gaming persona, or the feel of the game you’re currently playing.

SIDE-FIRING SPEAKERS FOR IMPROVED SITUATIONAL AWARENESS

Strix SCAR Edition delivers clearer, louder, and more accurate audio so every action sounds real, all powerfully delivered through two expansive side-firing speakers which provide surround audio effects so you’ll know where an enemy is approaching from. With this immersive stereo audio, even the quietest sounds can be heard, so you’ll pick up on every hidden movement. Smart-amplifier technology monitors the audio output and makes real-time adjustments, so you can pump up the volume without worrying about damaging the cones — and that makes output up to 200% louder than before, with increased dynamic range and bass. Sonic Studio III provides high quality in-game audio, as well as improved streaming and audio recording for perfect voice pickup and noise reduction. Every little advantage aids your march to victory — and Strix SCAR Edition ensures you hear every precise audio cue!

ARMED WITH ROG GAMING CENTER3

Summon ROG Gaming Center with a single press of a hotkey to see a comprehensive dashboard with loads of useful information, including both CPU and GPU frequencies and temperatures — and use the control panel to make adjustments in real time. ROG GameFirst, GameVisual, Sonic Studio, Sonic Radar, Aura Core, as well as XSplit Gamecaster, can also be accessed through ROG Gaming Center. With ROG Gaming Center, you can even save different game settings and parameters in the cloud so you can access them even when you change laptops. It offers improved compatibility with all ROG software, including software for ROG graphics cards. ROG Gaming Center is even available via the ROG Android or iOS apps, so you can keep all the controls close at hand.

QUICK-ACCESS GAMING CONNECTIONS2

Strix SCAR Edition comes with USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C, up to four USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A, HDMI 2.0 (supports 4K UHD output at 60 FPS), and Mini DisplayPort 1.2 ports, so connecting the latest, greatest gaming peripherals is a cinch.

MAXIMUM BANDWIDTH, MINIMUM ENERGY CONSUMPTION2

Strix SCAR Edition features the latest 802.11ac 2x2 Wave 2 Wi-Fi standard, with two antennas each for both transmission and reception, for speeds that are up to 1.7Gbps. That’s 2x faster than 802.11ac 2x2 and 12x faster than 802.11b/g/n! The 2x2 wireless configuration provides up to 30% more coverage than the 1x1 configuration. A more reliable and robust wireless connection ensures better gaming experiences. ROG First also ensures ROG routers and ASUS RT-series routers prioritize packets according to the GameFirst V settings in your ROG laptop for faster, more stable connections. Strix SCAR Edition even has low-energy Bluetooth 4.1, enabling you to game longer and more reliably with your Bluetooth peripherals!

Excellent Laptop for gaming on a budget

Pros: I was afraid that the GTX 1050 4gb would be lacking....so far it is not. I installed a 16gb Ram chip for a total of 23gb which is much needed. Mind you I am playing games that came out in 2016, 2017 etc but they are still graphic heavy games on Ultra such as DOOM 2016. I have yet to see any kind of noticeable frame rate slowing. Tends to range between 45 and 120 on the games I play. I'm sure the 1060 has a higher average, but if I can keep over 38fps or so and not experience excessive heating or load on the CPU, then I am a happy camper. Great gaming laptop for the price and it does not come loaded with junk software, very clean out of the box and boots extremely fast. Monitor is crisp, super bright (have on less than half brightness all the time). Overall quality is good, it feels sturdy. Fans are loud at first but you forget about them pretty quickly and they don't have a whine, just a noticeable blowing sound.

Cons: -128 SSD is a 128SSD....all of your games have to be installed on the 1TB Hybrid Drive but it is reasonably fast and I haven't seen excessive load times on the games. Multi-tasking and using it as a work station is extremely fast for loading and use of various programs/applications such as Excel, etc.

Other Thoughts: Highly recommend.

It is a good product and good shipping until it reaches my hands.

Pros: hard drive very fast hdd + mvno, has good keyboard colors, bios 307 version.

fast processor and amazing video card for that price

Cons: try to register the product (not for warranty) but to register it in the asus database.
and he told me that the product was already registered, so it is not known if the product is 100% new, or remanufactured, or is second. That disappointed me enough.

the asus rog gaming center fails a lot, does not show the temperature well sometimes

and to make matters worse the seller should not put those images, since several programs like sonic sudio, gamefirst 5, and the 3 fans correspond to another version different than 17 inches.

Other Thoughts: for now I want to know if the product is remanufactured or is a second pc, since I pay for something new and I know that this model is already registered,

Its a great laptop for the price

Pros: Very first off is the looks of this laptop. It has a kevlar/carbon fiber graphic palm rest (not sure if thats what its actually made out of), and the LEDs accent the keyboard and design perfectly. The monitor is awesome! It plays video smoothly, and while testing Unigine Valley benchmark, didnt notice any stuttering whatsoever except when the video card lagged on certain scene loads...and only then briefly. But other than that...

The last few reviews Ive read about this laptop mention both the keyboard and touch pad. There is nothing wrong with the keyboard and track pad in and of themselves; they are what they are. Dont expect them to be made out of titanium, they arent mechanical keys, and the touch pad is there for you in case you forgot your mouse. They work just fine. Its a budget gaming laptop. Not that there arent a few cons to this....

I forgot to mention that the speakers are phenomenal for a laptop. Ive had many laptops in my days; never had one that sounded this good with its own onboard sound system. It has a ton of bass, mids and treble; quite easily the best thing about this laptop.

Cons: For an SSD drive, it loads pretty slowly. Booting up Windows 10 doesnt take long, but loading up any games takes a little bit of time. Granted they arent M.2 drives, but not really an egg loss. The HDD works just fine.

Ethernet adapter doesnt seem to be functional on mine. I tried connecting it to different cables through my modem, and yep its borked on mine. Wifi works just fine. I docked 2 eggs for this, but I can get online for now with Wifi.

This is a barebones laptop: no bag, no manuals, no CDs (doesnt even come with a Cd/DVD burner to my dismay...) but just a laptop and charging cable. No big deal to me though, this laptop isnt going anywhere. I am very surprised this doesnt come with an optical drive, but I guess thats the new wave of the future.

One last issue with this was whoever shipped this item to me didnt package this as well as they should have. Had this not been a review product, I wouldnt have accepted this because they only placed 1 bubble bag to prevent the box from moving around, and we all know how great UPS is at handling their cargo; but maybe UPS had to repackage this on the fly, so I dont know who did what. Please be more careful with shipping high value parts.

Other Thoughts: Unigine Valley benchmark score: 61.8 FPS, Score 2587, min FPS 18, Max FPS 110.3
3D Mark score : P7233 @ 1280x720. Couldnt test at 1920x1080 because the card isnt up to the task.
Dont expect this laptop to function well for VR if you even think of trying to do just this. For gaming online, this is an excellent laptop, but you shouldnt expect to be playing Grand Theft Auto 5 at max settings; at best youll play this at 1280x720 and get playable frames. It plays Modern Warfare 2 at max settings at 1280x720 without stuttering. Im not disappointed in its performance, just in the bad ethernet port.

Looking for a great Laptop? You’ve found it!

Pros: I’m having a hard time trying to find something wrong with this laptop! I looked into the other reviews from multiple sites to get an idea of what to look for, but I have failed to find those faults myself! The things I’ve found are so bland, that it seems hardly worth mentioning. I’ve worked on many different laptops, while most were entry level, I have played with a couple higher end ones. I’ve replaced keyboards, screens, and even the CPU/GPU fan on my HP about a year ago. Forgive me if I believe that my opinion on these are worth something!

First, let’s talk about the great news for this little bugger! The slot for the m.2 is Gen3 x4 and is capable of running the newer SSDs out there! The one included is cheap to get you started, but when it comes time to upgrade, you can! The 128GB is reading pretty fast, but only writes at a max of 600MBs.
3,000 of course is going to be better, but it is a great starting point! The SSHD is also your entry point storage and you can change it out for a larger and speedier SSD. My test was with what was included, and I’m not in a rush to upgrade just yet! It is PLENTY fast enough as it is right now!

The memory can also be upgraded. Again, 8GB is plenty to get you started! What I really love about this other than I can upgrade and make a BEAST of this thing more than it already is; the discrete graphics doesn’t need to be turned off! The only time it started to warm up on me was when I was testing out a game. So, I can’t say “This thing gets HOT!” I reckon it will if you game for hours on end, but I wouldn’t do that on a laptop. For me, that’s like watching a 4K movie on a phone. In a pinch, maybe. I rather watch it on the big screen TV though! For the few days I’ve been on it, it didn’t get hot on me. I never heard the fans even when I unplugged it and took it for someone else to give me their opinion on it. The power brick never got warm either! (Very Important safety issue for me! I always make sure my bricks are never on carpet or other easy to combust materials) So for those having heat issues and were not gaming and stressing the machine, that can’t be normal if mine was a mere 40-45 celsius during normal use!

Another issue that I couldn’t agree with is, I read it had a weak keyboard! I guess the complaint was taken into account when the designed the new ones because mine is fantastic! The leds have 3 levels of brightness and unless you are in the noon-day sun or in a brightly light building, it is fine! I love how I can change the colors to any I wish and not just a few preselects. It isn’t as advance as some other keyboard I’ve tested that allowed me to do the Night Rider Kitt slide, but it is fantastic for where we are on this! A sub grand laptop. I do believe it is worth a grand, no problem!

I also couldn’t complain about the speakers! I have NEVER been impressed by the speakers on a laptop, and I was expecting these to be just about like them. Granted they aren’t 5.1 and able to stand on their own if you wanted to use it for movie night, they ARE pretty impressive for laptop speakers! I would have no problem enjoying a quite movie night on it and not feel the need for headphones. In a pinch of course! I could see you being asked to put in headphones if you are on a plane though! So maybe because I wasn’t expecting much, I was REALLY impressed with how well the speakers performed! And I didn’t have this Bloatware that I usually had! Unless you include the programs from Asus. The only thing I removed was the Antivirus. I may end up removing some of the Asus stuff I won’t be using later, but right now it’s not invading the system and causing me grief like others I’ve seen!
The brushed aluminum looks great and repels the fingerprints beautifully! The lid seems fine with me. I never was one to tug on just one corner of a laptop, so it doesn’t seem flimsy to me in the least. You got an inch bevel around the screen so your thumb in the center isn’t going to put a print on your screen! Probably not even your webcam unless you go deep! The whole laptop looks fantastic!

Cons: Asus Install didn’t work. Wouldn’t allow me to select anything. I might try later on, but there is a good chance that I might just uninstall it.

Alright, the few little blahs of this thing. While the rest of the system repels fingerprints like magic, the touchpad does not!

It would be fantastic if the Power LED and the ROG Eye on the cover could match the lights on the keyboard, but red Is fine too.

Can’t tell if Number Lock is on.

That was it! That was all I could complain about! The box was fantastic, kinda tilted to here and there to “present” you the laptop! The Asus brick is nice and labeled so you don’t accidently use it for another laptop. It doesn’t get hot like other bricks do. Oh, and the far most right top USB is the one you’d want to use for external mouse. Those things are hard to read but you remember where the weakest link is and you don’t have to look again.

Other Thoughts: I did take the BIOS up to 307 and updated everything I could. I had some issues with trying to update the trackpad, but since it was working just fine, I didn’t pursue it aggressively. The drivers for it felt like they were not user friendly. A small note also said you need to install the Intel Serial I/O Driver first? Naturally, if you search that, you may end up with a software package from Intel that got me updating 3 different things including the drivers for the m.2 slot, the Bluetooth and Wireless drivers. I try to stick with just the manufacture’s recommended drivers unless I am having a problem with something. Sometimes you have to look up the maker of a piece of hardware in your system and they may have a newer driver that the manufacturer does not. Sometimes you mess things up when you try doing that! So, if it isn’t needed, I try not to go into such depths. With all that said, Asus should really tackle that problem right away so users don’t wander and end up in the wrong places installing the wrong things! If something needs installed first, perhaps it should be included in the package and in fact, installed first?

The Samsung MZ-VLW1280 SSD is in fact a 2280 for those interested in updating their SSD right away and I can’t say for all the systems, but my GL503VD has only one memory chip in it leaving the second slot open for upgrades. But I think I’d be maxing it out and I’ll have to do a tear down to get to the second one. (Easy enough after watching a YouTube video on how to!) Note the sticky foot needs to be removed and then a small screw for getting into the SSD/SSHD/Memory area.

I know there are like five different models for the GL503 series, and to each their own, but this is a fantastic laptop for non-gamers to invest in if they get one working fantastic like mine! It’s like driving a sports car. You don’t need all that power because you want to go speed limit and avoid trouble, but it is great knowing that the power is there if you ever need it! It’s a great laptop for casual gamers! I can’t say for those that make gaming their life, as I assume those folks have crazy systems with water cooling and such going on. I gave up on that over two decades ago and looking back, my phone is probably more powerful than my system back then! Again, to each their own. This isn’t cutting edge, and that floats my boat just fine! Cutting edge requires too much time, effort, and money! It is still a VERY nice machine and does everything I could want it to!

It's a laptop. Does what I purchased it for.

Pros: -Sexy RGB!
-Cheap for a 1050
-Refresh rate amazing for the price.

Cons: -Track pad absolutely worthless. Bad enough for me to seek out the review page. You must have an external mouse, obviously not difficult, but losses a little on the portability scale. My only guess is the didn't waste money on it because it's a gaming computer and no self respecting gamer would use a track pad to game, but I don't want to take my death adder everywhere I go.

Nice looking laptop, but not without its problems

Pros: - Boots up very quickly. The hybrid SSD + HDD really makes navigating Windows 10 a quick process
- From an aesthetic point of view, this laptop is hard to beat. From a customizeable keyboard back light to a beautiful, high resolution screen, it really is quite pretty.
- Less bloatware than I'm used to seeing on a new computer, so that was nice. Zero bloatware would be better, but take what you can get

Cons: - Immediately out of the box, the laptop had issues with spontaneously powering off. Browsing the internet? Power off. Booting up? Power off. Playing a game? Power off. The type of usage appears to be irrelevant.
- The keyboard feels flimsy. I could see the entire keyboard depress with every keystroke. Not a deal breaker, but worth noting.
- The track pad was somewhat awkward to use as well, but nothing that continued usage couldn't have fixed.

Other Thoughts: - Based on other reviews posted for this machine my problem is not common.
- I never got to put the computer through its paces due to my power issue.
- Newegg has been great throughout the RMA process, so if you decide to buy this laptop and have problems, you can rest assured that you're not taking a risk by doing so.

Great Gaming Laptop and worth it

Pros: -Great gaming capabilities
-Cooling is well ventilated
-Skinny and compact
-Fast browsing
-Stunning visual qualities
-Super responsive

Cons: -Low battery life (you don't get a fast car for good gas mileage so can't really complain much)
-Bloatware that comes with ASUS
-Keyboard pushes down as if flimsy, but not too much of a hassle. Just don't mash the keyboard
-Track pad is awkward to use when browsing the web. The right mouse click is difficult to click sometimes
-Arrow keys under the number pad is also awkward weird

Other Thoughts: This product is something I would definitely recommend. The battery life on it is really bad though, so if you were to use it for schooling without a power source, definitely use the ROG Center to make a profile to end the tasks of programs to prolong that battery life. I use it as a second PC for myself as I game on it, jot down school notes, and do photo/video editing with it. The way the cooling system works is well engineered too. The last generation and other laptops would usually have the struggle computer being really hot and it would end up on the left side of the keyboard, the WASDs. Instead, it would be more towards the middle/right side of the keyboard. The RGB keyboard on the laptop is really cool, too. When on sleep mode, the laptop will have a red heartbeat pattern on the left side of the keyboard then a wave would go across the whole keyboard. The different options vary on it too as you can only have static if you want a full rainbow RGB keyboard.
