The pocket-sized Garmin nüvi 255 gives you turn-by-turn voice directions with spoken street names and a large full-color touch-screen, so it’s easy to stay on course! The nüvi mounts quickly with the included suction cup mount and adhesive dash disk, and pops off with a gentle tug, so you can take it with you. The Li-ion battery lets you use nüvi to navigate on foot for up to 4 hours between charges, so you can let it lead the charge when you’re making sales calls, or out for a day of shopping conquest.

The unit ships with preloaded regional maps, and includes a huge database of Points of Interest (POI), like gas stations, restaurants, attractions and parks, and shopping. You can also use the Garmin’s Poi Loader software (free download) to install custom POI like traffic camera locations and school zones, and then set proximity alerts to warn you when you’re approaching one.

This Garmin also supports an FM traffic receiver (receiver and subscription sold separately) to help you avoid sitting in traffic jams. The Garmin nüvi 255 is a slick entry into the auto GPS market, at a great price!

Decent, but missing key features

Pros: -Large screen, easy to use touch screen

-The holder and suction cup it comes with work great. It won't suction to my dashboard, but I put it on my windshield next to my rearview mirror.

-I like that it shows you the speed limit of the road you are on. It's very accurate and will change as soon as you hit a sign with a new speed posted. It also shows you how fast you're going, which is cool.

-Volume gets nice and loud so you can hear it if you need to

-Will get you to where you're going. Using this, I drove from Buffalo NY to Washington DC to Lexington KY, all in a matter of 2 days.

-Lets you change accents, languages and genders, if you so wish.

Cons: -There is no "most use of freeways" or similar options. I know a highway is very close, but this thing has me drive on a windy back road that is one-way in each direction. It's a major annoyance.

-Doesn't say how many minutes away you are from destination. Rather, it shows expected arrival time. I can do math, but I'd prefer the option of seeing I'm x minutes away.

-Sometimes if two roads run parallel and close, it gets confused as to which road you're on, but I think this may be a problem with just about any GPS. Those situations are rare -- roads don't usually run like that.

-Sometimes I wish it would tell me earlier (or at all) if I need to be on the left or the right side of the road at a split or to make a change. At some points, it emphasizes to keep left or right, when it's obvious I shouldn't get off the road I'm on. But then other times, the roads are confusing and the GPS doesn't warn me.

-When I mess up, I wish it would tell me to take a U turn instead of 3 righ

Other Thoughts: This is affordable and does it's basic job fine. If you simply want to avoid getting lost, or want to take a road trip that will be highway driving, this will work just fine. But not having the option to direct it to prefer highway routes is a problem when you're in unfamiliar areas with lots of rural back roads. That is really the only missing feature that would give me pause about this GPS.

Love It!

Pros: Acquired satellites quickly. Accurate. Loud enough to be heard. Easy to operate. Excellent suction cup holds firmly. I like that the car icon moves steadily along the road on the map. I saw some on display in stores that had the icon jumping at intervals. This unit gives good warnings of an upcoming street. First, after making a turn onto the street it will tell me how far to the next turn. Then it will tell me I'm approaching the turn in XXX feet (or yards, or .X miles, depending on the total beginning distance), then it tells me to turn when I'm within about 100 feet of the actual street. It also names the street - A MUST HAVE FEATURE! Make sure the unit you buy names the street. It comes in handy when two or more streets meet at an intersection on the same side.

Cons: None that I can see for the price.

Other Thoughts: I caught this on the last day of a sale. I'm also new to using GPS, but it was time to get rid of the paper maps. Always read the reviews from others. I was quite ready to spend a couple of hundred dollars for a "better" unit, but after reading the reviews and the problems with the more expensive ones, it seemed to me that this one had everything I needed without the problems. I always say you get what you pay for, but in this instance you get more!

Good for the price

Pros: Small size means it will fit on my girlfriend's handlebars and be inobtrusive. The included suction cup mount works great in her car as well. I already have a garmin for my Harley, so updating the maps and trips on both units will be a snap!

Cons: It really is small, so if you have a long dash, you may want a bigger screen.

Device works, more or less

Pros: All of the advertised features work. I like that the robotic-feminine voice is named "Samantha." It's okay, I guess.

Cons: It doesn't always seem to be very accurate, even after calibration - It will say things like "One...mile...turn...left" and the road is actually two blocks ahead." Maybe that's just the way it works for all of these devices. This is my first one, so I don't know.

Other Thoughts: I laughed when driving alongside a river and it draws the car directly in the water. Ha!

Was well worth the money.

Pros: Works great, have not had a problem with it thus far. Can't think of anything wrong with it, also.

Cons: I don't travel enough to make use of it.

Very dependable so far...

Pros: Bought this to replace a Nuvi 260. Has performed very well and updating to the newest software makes a huge difference. Also including a free download of the newest map update is a huge plus. The detour button is a welcome addition.

Cons: None for this model but see notes on my previous 260 below.

Other Thoughts: I had a Nuvi 260 that did not quite make it to the 2 year mark. My Nuvi 260 is suffering from the very common loose mini usb port issue. Do your research, it's obvious that these units are defective from the factory and the issues can crop up a different times of the unit's life. I'm very disappointed in Garmin because it reminds me of another four letter computer manufacturer who shipped out large amounts of pc's with very bad parts. I depend on these units for my everyday work and take very good care of them. I expected better out of Garmin and purchasing this unit is me giving them one last chance and I needed something very quickly. Thanks Newegg for the quick shipping as always!

Nuvii 255 for me

Pros: Fast, accurate, very easy to use. Acquires sat hookup very rapidly even on cloudy says.
Bottom line: great entry level unit.

Cons: Would be nice if it displayed direction.

Other Thoughts: This is my first portable "nav system"...its easier to use than the one built into my car.
This is a great unit for non-tech folks who need guidance in going from point A to B.
