Not the safest place for your files.

Pros: Looks cool.

Cons: Unsafe for data storage. No video output. HP stopped support two years after release. Does not stream nor communicate well with Windows PCs for multimedia needs.

Other Thoughts: HP marketed this unit as so safe you didn't need to maintain a backup of your data anywhere else. Even plugged into a UPS, the MediaSmart EX reformatted itself after a power hiccup and erased 10 years worth of photographs. I was preparing to purchase a second EX to provide redundancy for the digital photos as my PC was out of storage space. I quickly abandoned the EX as a safe storage solution.
I do not recommend this product.

WHS is awful

Comments: I just threw this thing in the garbage after three years. I'm never using a Microsoft product for anything important in the future.

Great for the home!!!

Comments: I have a HP MediaSmart EX470 Home Server since early 2010. It has worked exactly as the advert copy says - had to recover one of the PCs, actually a laptop that seems like the OS was corrupted. Used the restore disk that come with the MediaSmart server and it worked! Easy breezie. Recovered everything since the last backup, (tho I went back to a back up from a couple of weeks before just to be safe. I saved a lot of time and hassle by using my MediaSmart Server to recover my PC. This is really the way to go. No trips to a PC shop to see if they can rebuild a drive or having to go to the trouble of reinstalling the OS myself and starting over - this is PRICELESS!!. Remote access isn't hard and have the family photos set up so that family can access them over the internet. That's great!

Best purchase of the year!

Pros: This thing rocks! Easy to set up and yet still very versatile. Along with the third party add-ons, the possibilities to this thing are limitless. Remote access rules, streaming media to my Plasma HDTV is flawless, automatic backups, syncing files... I can't say enough.

Cons: The only thing that might take a bit of tech knowledge is the remote access. I had to forward the port on my modem so it would get firewalled. I don't think this would be typical in most people's set up though...

A good version 1.0 of a Windows Home Server

Pros: 1. Works well with my other computers running Vista Home Premium 64-bit, XP Media Center, XP Pro and XP Home Edition
2. Numerous mods and plug-ins available
3. Easy to add additional storage
4. Initial setup and network configuring was very easy - practically click and go
5. Automatic backup of PC's and reminder pop-ups when a PC hasn't been backed up recently.
6. Gigabit Ethernet connection
7. Good looking system. Small footprint. Compact design.
8. Auto recovery of failed PC. Recovering my alien laptop after it crashed was a simple matter of popping in the recovery CD and booting up the laptop.
9. Much more stable than any desktop version of Windows. To date I've not had a single operating system problem.
10. Free trial web connect and anti-virus software. Free web address provided by HP for one year.

Cons: 1. Needs more memory. Like most posts I've read I replaced the 512MB memory with a 2GB.
2. Faster processor would be nice. I upgraded the processor to a 2.6 GHz AMD 1640 processor.
3. The EX475 should have the option of being configured with 1 1TB hard drive.
4. More drive bays needed - expansion box needed.
5. A larger model with 6 or 8 drive bays would be a nice option.
6. Drives can only be configured as storage space or for backups - not both.
7. Power usage. If this box is meant to be on 24/7/365 it needs to be able to draw very little power when not in use.
8. No access to BIOS.
9. Backing up more than one PC at a time can really bog down the network and the server.
10. Backups fail when all the free space on the drive is used up. This may be just a matter of setting a configuration parameter.
11. No un-delete. Deleted files need to be restored. A trash bin would make a nice addition.
12. Doesn't come with a TV tuner card for DVR capability "in the box".

Other Thoughts: I'm really pleased with how well this system performs. I've had no problems with it to date (got mine back in Aug of '08) and continually find more uses for it. Once the hardware upgrades mentioned above are in place accessing files is almost as fast as if they were on the local machine. When I ordered my EX470 I also bought 3 750GB drives to go in it. They are already over half filled. What HP needs to do now is sell an expansion box using the same computer case and power supply as their server that connects to the server via its eSATA port. A different approach would be to come out with a "tower" version of this case that uses the same size footprint but is similar in height to a mid-size tower case with room for 6 - 8 drives. I've recovered files I inadvertently deleted and revive a crashed laptop. I've stored all my videos, photos, tax returns and other valuable documents on it. If you're on the fence or are considering getting a home server get this system. You'll be glad you did.

Great NAS / File server

Pros: I bought mine about 2 weeks ago. Took a few days to setup and put all data on it. Also had to configured users, remote access, website, etc.. I love this thing!!! It’s great to have when you want to share music, photos and other data for friends and family that are in another state or even country. Setup only took me a few days cause I was tweaking it and making sure everyone has the correct access to certain folders.
I added a Samsung 1tb drive to it. Also I upgraded the memory to 2gb and the CPU to a 2.6GHz AMD LE-1640 Orleans (45W). I don’t know what the old CPU’s performance was cause before I even turned it on I upgraded these 2 things. It runs fast and smooth. No problems. It backs up the PC’s real fast. 5-10 minutes per PC in my case. (I only back up the operating system partition. Everything else (data) is on the HP NAS)

Cons: Too bad the memory and CPU upgrade did not come with it. Spent an extra $90 for both.

Other Thoughts: This box is awesome. Windows home server 2003. you can remote into your PC’s at home. Also the add-ons are nice. Make sure you look for them. The webguide add-on is a nice way to view photos, stream music and video. Too bad you can’t download from the app. You have to go back to shared folders to download/upload any files or folders.
This is a great item for a small business that doesn’t need a server installed with a lot of rights and permissions. A very cheap alternative to a server that cost thousands. You can map drives to as how ever many users/PC’s. The 10 user limit is for backing up PC’s and remote access to them. I recommend this item as a NAS or anyone who wants to share his music, pictures and videos.

Pros: - Supports 10 PCs
- 4 Drive Bays (1 occupied at the start)
- Easily modded, many plugins available
- Network much faster than my Western Digital World Edition NAS drives
- Rock stable with Power Pack 1 patch
- Easily synchs with my XBOX360 for videos and music
- Easy to create a centralized ITunes library

Cons: Comes with 512MB of RAM out of the box. That's not much for a device running a heavily modified Windows Server 2003 OS.

Other Thoughts: RAM can be upgraded to 2GB relatively easily without voiding the warrantee.

Other than the RAM, it is almost a perfect device.

You love it if you use it...

Pros: An excellent backup / media appliance. Solid construction. Will save your bacon when the times comes (and it WILL!). I already used it more then once after an fiasco of XP SP3 installation. My 60GB+ laptop installation was completely recovered in 100 minutes.
Backups happen automatically every night. New PP1 (sp1 for those new to WHS) fixed reported data corruption bugs and added new features.
With this server you can access your data and computers even remotely, you can allow your family members to see your pictures without publishing them on public web sites (Flickr, Picassa...)

Cons: 1. Standard 512 MB is NOT enough. Invest additional $40+ for 2GB. You will NOT regret. HP admitted this, and even lifted warranty restrictions on user memory upgrades.
2. Current backup of the server backup is manual. Needs scheduling automation.
3. Doesn't have flexible backup schedule for different days of week or month - minor issue.
4. Client computers during the backups are sometimes unresponsive - you will need to take a coffe brake (6-10 minutes a day) ...
5. There are numbers of "Add-ins" that add new functionality to this product. You can even write your own, if you want.
6. This server can become your centralized storage for all your musing, photos and ... recorded TV shows .
7. No cdrom, no keybord, no monitor access can make support "very interesting" , and some people may not like it.

Other Thoughts: My unit came with a pretty loud PSU. This is a known issue with some units. Call HP, and they WILL send you a replacement cage to remedy this problem. According to HP, under normal condition these units are run silent.
People who complain about this HP/Microsoft product simply don't understand what REAL and REGULAR home users need.
This is also a great computer for any small business or church office. I am working with my priest to get him one too.
This is only a first (well, maybe second) product from Microsoft that I got really excited about. It is excelent.
Buy extra disks to preform backup of a backup for off-site storage. (USB and eSata interfaces supported).
