Phone Scoop

Best of CES 2017 (Phone Scoop)

"This large Android handset includes a 5.5-inch full HD display with curved edges and Gorilla Glass 3. The V8 is powered by a Snapdragon 625 processor with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage. It supports memory cards up to 128 GB or a second SIM card. The V8 has twin 13-megapixel cameras on the back, which is a feature normally found on pricier handsets. ZTE says the second camera helps with features such as bokeh (background blur). The front camera has an 8-megapixel sensor. ZTE says the 3,140mAh battery delivers all-day power, but it supports Quick Charge 2.0 for rapid power-ups when needed. Last, the Blade V8 includes a front-mounted fingerprint reader. "

Great for the price

Pros: Powerful. This thing generally runs with zero issues even in games like HearthStone (not something I play much but its a decent benchmark for how powerful a phone is, in my [limited] experience).
Fingerprint scanner is nice to have as this is the first phone I've had which has it.
Good cameras compared to what I have had previously
Battery life is good*

Cons: Settings menu is a little annoying to work with - doesn't always make the most sense where some of the controls are
Can't uninstall things like the Youtube app/make youtube videos open in a browser instead (seriously, screw the youtube app)
Hard to find things like cases and screen protectors to go with it (ex: I like my wallet-case so I can store certain commonly used cards with it - finding one that fit this phone was a bit of an ordeal - had to go with a 'fits almost any phone!' one which isn't ideal)

Other Thoughts: * Battery life gets less good when you have things like antivirus/email/chat apps running all the time for work reasons. Self-inflicted pain, but still. I can still get through a quarter day or so on one charge while running that, playing games from time to time, and running Google Play Music roughly 24/7.

After having this phone, I'm rather glad I've never dropped over ~$200 on a phone, I just fail to see what you can get for more that is worth the price difference.

Sad to see that this phone is out of stock on Newegg - Ama zon might still have it, haven't checked.

Ok, just the really weak vibrate.

Pros: Overall good specs I guess.

Cons: Doesn't have the quick access to do-not-disturb in the top drop down menu.

Vibrate is so weak I often can't hear or feel it.

Other Thoughts: Gonna try and get a Moto since I read those are the phones with strong vibrate.

Incorrectly advertised WWAN that is not functional in this ZTE Blade V8 Pro phone.

Pros: There are no "PROs". I needed WWAN in the phone and the "INTERNET" advertising stated that it has WWAN.

Cons: The setup screen for Bluetooth tethering has the button to select but it does not work because, after completion of the Bluetooth pairing, Windows 7 does not recognize the Qualcomm Snapdragon X9 modem in the phone, that the ZTE literature defines as being there by name. The Qualcomm Snapdragon X9 modem shows in the Bluetooth device screen on my computer. On the third call, the ZTE technical support stated to me that even though the setup screen has the button for the Bluetooth tethering and it shows it selected; the Qualcomm Snapdragon X9 modem cannot be used by your computer as a Bluetooth modem.

Other Thoughts: NO, I would not recommend this phone!

Lovely product

Pros: Good size, and a popular enough model to readily obtain cases and protectors. I've even come to see it in a local department store as a contracted phone for name brand carriers. Good size, good camera, excellent memory space. Excellent cellular reception in a wide range of strengths. A solid buy through and through.

Cons: The Quick Charge function is a bear to have function, and will constantly yell at the user if the charger isn't strong enough. Would have preferred it to have an option to stop reminding the user they are using a lower output charger.

Great Phone! But lacks a very important feature!

Pros: - Lightning fast compared to most.
- Bright 1920 x 1080 LCD screen
- Dual camera option.
- Dual sim card slots.
- Great cameras!
- Fingerprint reader.
- Light but sturdy.
- Type-C USB cable.
- Has all the basic features, save for one.

Cons: - Seems it can't be upgraded to Android 7.0 Nougat
- Lacks OTG (On The Go) capability <- The important feature as title states, this baffled me when I found out it doesn't support OTG, that should be one of the basic features to any phone. If this isn't a big deal to you and want a powerful phone, it's worth it. But if you want to use external keyboards or thermal camera attachments (FLIR One or Seek) or anything else that use OTG, you'd be better off looking elsewhere. I have a FLIR One Third Gen, I plugged it in, but it didn't work and OTG is required for it.

Other Thoughts: I would recommend this product to anyone looking to get a new phone with a lot of features, as well as power, and doesn't break the bank otherwise, look for something else. If OTG isn't needed for your uses, I would get it. If I was to added something to this product, it would be OTG capability, rooting the phone won't fix this issue due to OTG being a hardware related feature. I would buy it again in the future if they added OTG support. I don't plan on returning it because I can use my FLIR One with my wife's phone or an Android tablet.

A midrange phone for a budget price

Pros: - 32Gb storage +SD card, 3 Gb ram
- Snapdragon 625 octocore processor with 506 GPU is plenty fast
- 5.5" Full HD screen is nice and clear
- USB type C with Quick Charge and all day battery
- Fast fingerprint reader on the front
- Dolby plus the audio chipset makes music from headphones sound amazing
- Continued security updates
- Nice photos in well lit environments, added Bokeh effects
- Sturdy ZTE branded case (similar to an Otterbox) included for free
- phone built like a tank with aluminum frame
- comes unlocked and works with any GSM carrier (AT&T or T-Mobile) (I have used it on both)

Cons: - Android 6.0 Marshmallow with no upgrade
- No stabilization on camera, poor low light photos
- No water protection
- phone is heavy like a tank
- speaker isn't great

Other Thoughts: I use this phone as my daily driver and it continues to surprise me at how good it is for the price. The only thing that I miss from my previous phone is Optical Image Stabilization. I've been able to give the phone an "upgrade" of sorts using a newer launcher using the Microsoft Launcher. It gives it a more modern look and feel with added functionality.
I can easily see me using this for another year or more.

Hard to beat

Pros: The price of this device for the specs you're getting is really good. I got this for 140 with a pair of free bluetooth headphones and the phone is great. I've looked really hard for another device that is 140 dollars with similar level specs and the only other device that comes close is probably the honor 7x, everything else either has a drastically weaker SoC or costs drastically more. I've seen it on sale for 100 without any bonuses and at 100 dollars, nothing beats it. Even used phones from used websites with similar specs are all like drastically higher.

Pretty fast fingerprint sensor
5.5 inch 1080p display
Good battery life relatively speaking
Can run pretty much anything you throw at it
Camera takes acceptable pictures and takes pretty good pictures in good lighting
Sound quality is acceptable for a single bottom firing speaker
LTE signal is better than most devices under 300 dollars. Its only a tiny bit worse than the flagship devices I tried that cost 5-10 times more.
Not too much bloatware and most of it can be disabled.
No camera bump
3.5mm headphone jack with Dolby

Cons: ZTE is currently in a bad situation so there is no warranty and no support on ZTE devices atm. This isnt a huge issue for most people but it is def something to keep in mind. Only works on providers using the T-Mobile network so LTE bands 2,4,12 this is probably the most important part. Since a phone without service is basically a paperweight.

Only works on T-mobile or providers using the T-mobile network
No warranty or support from ZTE currently but that may change if things work out for them.
Camera is kinda bad for low light pictures but for a device that costs 100-140 dollars I wouldn't expect it to be good in the first place.
Back is a slightly curved rubber material, not really a con but not really a good thing either.
Bezels are kinda big but that is pretty normal for a phone with a front facing fingerprint sensor.
I wish they made the back flat and added a slightly larger battery instead but its not a big deal.

Other Thoughts: Seriously tho, I don't think there is a device under 150 dollars that gives you the kind of specs, performance, and value that this device gives you. At under 150 dollars you're always going to have some kind of trade-off. Anyone looking to spend 100-150 dollars on a phone should already know what they are getting into. The only other phones that comes close are the LeEco phones but that company is already dead and their devices have crazy amounts of bloatware on them.

Don't Panic

Pros: ZTE phones have a good track record
Good specs on this model

Cons: No updates == No good

Other Thoughts: Don't panic about all the bankruptcy mentions in other reviews. The company is in fact NOT in bankruptcy. A lot of online news sites use the term "bankrupt" or similar terms in their headlines, but they use them in the context of rhetorical questions. Part of the US imposed ban on ZTEs business in the US has been lifted. They are not, and have never been in any form of bankruptcy because of the US bans in place. Just FYI.
