RIP Red Storm old friend 05/29/2008
This review is from: UBISOFT Rainbow Six Vegas 2 Single Player Game
Game was fun FPS with linear RPG aspects similar to the original R6 of years gone by. Some changes have been made to the franchise since I 1st played the original Red Storm titles.
Pretty rendering & good framerate on my 3870x2 even if it did only use 1 GPU core despite being an AMD bundle with my ATI dual GPU video card purchase. Was fun to play if not a bit infuriating at times.
One word: Buggy! Most recent update added a quirk to the useless voice command system that caused random orders to be issued even though you have voice command turned off. Fix is to disable, mute, etc... your mic in Windows AND the game.
AI's were stupid especially your team who would get in front of you, not take cover, or worse not execute commands. Clearly activity through the levels was trigger based and enemies would appear out of thin air rather than making their way in from a logical origin.
Unreal engine is terrible IMHO! Sound issues for 1988B on board sound users like myself (thanks Asus, *not*!) and others including the overpriced Creative dren. No access to console for tweaking, no straight forward editing of INI or CFG files either.
Online play is supposedly marred by today console kiddies and their hack & slash style of playing rather than the tactical play you learn in single player story mode.
Give my Valve's HL2 engine, ID's Doom3/Quake4, Stalker's X-ray, or Crytek's Crysis engines and I'd be a much happier camper. Of course engines can not offset the lack of skill putting together an over all good title our French friends at Ubisoft Montreal have. Never mind the differences from the old R6 to this new junk from the Ubisoft has a special place in my heart for putting out some of the poorest titles and supporting them as such.
Want a better game? Play Stalker, Crysis, or HL2 you'll be much happier!
