Solidly built & very useful but the auto spin down might drive you crazy 03/27/2010
This review is from: SAMSUNG STORY Station 1.5TB USB 2.0 3.5" External Hard Drive HX-DU015EB
The device is solidly built and is very reliable. I've owned one for over 6 months now on 24/7 and its performance is rock solid. The drive will spin down automatically after 10 minutes of none use or turns off when you shut down your PC. This is both a fabulous blessing and a horrible irritating curse. More on that later...
The price is very nice as well. You get a lot of space for your dollar. I bought this item when it was on sale so I got a pretty good deal.
There's a conspicuously ugly old school knob on the front that lets you adjust the brightness of the disk access light. You can also turn the device on/off this way as well. This is really superfluous though because the drive spins down after 10 minutes of no disk access or turns itself off after PC shutdown. I just leave the drive on 24/7, place a black piece of electrical tape over the access light and forget about it.
The spin down feature is really quite annoyingly funky though. The drive will automatically spin down after 10 minutes to conserve power. This gets irritating real quick if you use the drive in a media server PC. Imagine if you have XBMC and you browse to your TV Shows share which contains two of these hard drives. You need to wait 10 seconds for the drives to spin up. Then after you are done watching a 30 minute video the drives will need to spin up again. That’s 20 seconds wasted every time you watch a TV show. The wasted time adds up and anger grows! ;)
Despite the annoying spin down feature I really do love the drive. It's a great way to easily and painlessly add space to your system. Most users probably won't be bothered by the spin down feature as the drive will never shut off during disk access or writes; just when there is no access for 10 minutes. I suppose you could alleviate this problem by sharing a few torrents from this drive but I like the fact that I'm able to conserve power by having the drives spin down when not in use.
Long story short is that this is an excellent, reliable and well built device. There's a few obvious design flaws like not being able to adjust the time for automatic spin down and you can't stack the drives to conserve space but overall this is a great deal and I highly recommend this drive. Thank you Newegg for the great deal. :)
