This review is from: SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD502HJ/ST500DM005 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
Pros:
I'll let you all know when I get a working one. Based on my research, these drives are excellent so I'm really hoping it's an isolated incident. Will update and change rating if the next one works well
Cons:
DOA and UPS. Didn't even spin up or post to the BIOS. and UPS because it's well, UPS
Overall Review:
As it turns out, the Samsung Spinpoints seem to have an issue with the newer AMD chipsets with the SB850 but from what I've read the drives make a knocking sound unless they've been flashed with a different firmware. Mine however, didn't do anything at all despite which port SATA port I used. But being the glutton for punishment that I am, I simply ordered a replacement and then grabbed the 1tb thats on sale because they are supposed to be some of the best drives out there right now and I like building my rig for stabilty and longevity as my last setup was based on an old Nvidia Nforce 3 939 chipset which was bought refurbished on newegg about 6 years ago and still runs fine for everyday stuff but struggles with the newer VST/VSTi's. Rest of my rig is based on the 890gx from Gigabyte, an AMD 1090t, 8gb ripjaws, and Intel 80gb boot drive and Emu1820m sound card as this computer is built for music production with the drives themselves being used for sample storage and audio data.
