Awesome router! 10/05/2010
This review is from: Cisco Valet M20 802.11b/g/n Gigabit Wireless HotSpot Router up to 300Mbps
After reading countless reviews of the linksys e series / e3000 running hot or performance dropping off from overheating, I decided to go with the m20 valet since it does not seem to suffer the overheating issues according to cisco "posted by another reviewer" So I snagged up a unit and it in fact runs quite cool! Just barely warm to the touch after streaming a movie, downloading drivers and surfing the net! Checked it again after it being on for 24 hours and it is still just barely warm to the touch.
This unit replaced my original V1 WRT54G that has served me well for 8, almost 9 long years. In the last week, it needed to be unplugged and reset almost every day and was crapping out. I really got my moneys worth out of the old wrt series so decided to go back to cisco with the new valet product. So far, VERY happy with it. Menus feel almost identical to my old linksys router with many improvements such as being able to easily reserve ip addresses for things such as network printers
Could not stand the USB software they provided for novice users. If anything, I felt it complicated the setup. If you even have the slightest idea of what you are doing, then skip this feature all together. The old lynksys style setup menus are still available via the 192.168.1.1 ip. The only thing I ended up using the USB software for was turning off the guest access feature.
The case design is non functional but looks ok. I wish they kept with a standard case design regardless of the type of product such as modem, router or whatever so you could stack the units for a clean look.
Wish it had an option for an external antenna despite the outstanding coverage.
The packaging sucked on the unit. If you do not do your homework before you purchase, you would have no idea what the specifications are of the product *LOL*!!! It just shows a photo of the unit and the model number, no useful info at all! Supposedly cisco is marketing the product for someone that has no idea what a route
Would be nice if it had a USB port, but no biggie. $100 for a 10/100/1000 + wireless N is a fantastic deal.
Unit provides excellent coverage with no dead spots in my 1500 square foot home. I have net from the backyard to the front, in the garage and all rooms. Also the signal level is much better than my old unit as my neighbor used to see my network with 1 bar available, not he sees it with 3 bars. Surprised me since the unit has no external antennas.
Will report back if I have any issues however I feel the product is solid. And since they seem to have fixed the overheating issues with this unit, it should last a very very long time. Some reports claimed that this m20 was just a re-branded e3000 without usb, but I just cannot see that being the case since this one runs very cool compared to the blistering hot running E series routers.
