Good hardware--poor software 04/09/2012
This review is from: Linksys E3000-RM 802.11a/b/g/n 2.4/5GHz Dual Band Gigabit Wireless Router
This refurbished unit works well for me, so far. It is certainly better than the router I replaced, which was regularly dropping my wireless signal, or else was being swamped by signals from my Verizon Fios neighbors.
Much has already been written about the two-tier software which appears to be written by two different groups that never spoke to each other. In particular, you have to use Cisco Connect software to set up the guest accounts. But if you do this, you are REQUIRED to have the router password and the wireless access passwords to be identical. It doesn't take much technical savvy to know that this is a terrible idea. I realize that these e3000 models have been superseded, but Cisco/Linksys should spend some time and effort developing a decent management software package for these units, or else they will have to accept a fierce backlash of user discontent, which will most assuredly be reflected in the marketplace when it comes time to replace these units. I know I won't buy another Cisco/Linksys product if they don't provide me with decent software for this one.
Of course there is the option of using Linux router management software such as TomatoUSB. This gets rave reviews from experienced users, but as of now, it doesn't provide for the guest account feature. Some people seem to have turned their old router into a "guest account" router, running alongside the e3000.
