Unreliable 10/19/2012
This review is from: Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1TB USB 3.0 Ultra-Portable Hard Drive (Silver)
Pros:
Size (1TB), Single port USB powered
Cons:
This device was extremely unreliable upon arrival. Connecting the device to any USB port, whether 2.0 or 3.0, connected it at first without issues. After about a minute or two of connectivity it would disconnect and reconnect rapidly. This occurred more often if I attempted to transfer to and from the device. This made it impossible to copy anything larger than about 10mb at a time due to it repeatedly disconnecting. Updating/reinstalling the drivers did not resolve the issue. I was able to replicate the problem without fail on 3 Windows 7 workstations (2 64bit, 1 32bit).
Overall Review:
Upset that I had recently RMA'd 2 other products the day before fully testing this, I decided to give it another chance. I opened the enclosure to remove the internal drive. The Seagate device that I received contained a Samsung ST1000LM024 2.5" drive. I decided to install this in a workstation (as I needed a hard drive anyway) and it now works flawlessly. I didn't have to reformat, just connect to the motherboard and power on. This device has not disconnected a single time since doing this. In light of this, I can only assume that the USB attachment that came with the device is incredibly faulty, but that the drive itself is reliable.
Seagate: Thumbs Down
Samsung: Thumbs Up
