This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WR720N Wireless N150 Router, 150Mbps, Internal Antenna, IP QoS
the router arrived in retail packaging inside a newegg box filled with foam peanuts, i opened the box and found the router, power adapter, a quick installation guide, and a easy setup cd.
it is a good looking router, its small and very light at only 4.5oz. and it has a internal antenna.
the router uses very little electricity, a constant 5.4 watts and makes very little heat compared to my previous router which uses 24 watts of power and is twice the size and weight.
The TPlink-wr720n is very easy to mount on a wall. it has two notches on the bottom that fit screws, nails or tacks. The led's are not bright enough to shine on walls, so it will not be a distraction in a dark room.
the router comes with a cdrom which contains software to assist you in setting up your router. "the easy setup assistant" which is just that, easy. it gives a demonstration with photos on how to connect your router to a computer and a modem. it also lets you set up your network name, select your level of wireless security. the default wireless password is provided on a sticker on the bottom of the router. it also gives you the option to change the password during the setup wizard.
This router has all the typical settings you would expect to find on a basic home router, such as parental controls, internet useage, lease time, port forwarding, etc.
one thing to be aware of is that the router only comes with a single 4 foot ethernet cable. the setup assistant requires that two ethernet cables be used to complete setup. one cable goes from the router to a computer. and the second goes from the router to a internet modem. so if you don't have a second ethernet cable available, you will need one to finish the setup wizard.
while browsing the internet, i can tell that this router is not as fast as my old router. when i navigate to a new webpage i first see headers, text appear, and the general outline of the webpage, followed by images.. with my other router it all seems to show up at the same time. Most people will probably find this router to be adequate, the wireless signal is strong throughout my home and i have not had any problems with dropouts or disconnects. it is very easy to set up, and makes very little heat. however the lack of more than two ethernet ports and slower speed of this router does make a difference for somebody like me who plays games and copies large files to other computers on a home network.
Each of these speed tests were the average of 5 benchmarks through my Internet service provider's website. all wireless benchmarks were done with the same wireless card at 6 feet away.
previous 10-100-1000 Wireless N router.
Wired download speed 82.65 mbps
Wired upload speed 2.85mbps
Wireless download speed 31.5mbps
Wireless upload speed 2.8mbps
Wired download speed 31.40 mbps
Wired upload speed 2.75 mbps
Wireless download speed 30.32mbps
Wireless upload speed 2.75mbps
the router clearly falls short in benchmarks, however depending on the speed of your internet connection, you might not notice any difference at all.
We are sorry you are experiencing less than adequate performance in speed using the TL-WR720N.
In some of the cases that this has been an issue, updating the firmware of the device resolves it. However, there is only one release of Firmware for this model, and it is fairly recent. (5/16/2012) You may want to check your current version to see if it has been loaded on your device already.
If not, I suggest you download the recent firmware and update your device with it as it could substantially improve your performance.
Also, I noticed you mentioned the lack of ethernet ports on this device. We hope you know about the wide range of other TP-LINK devices that may have the features to better suit your needs!
