This review is from: QNAP TS-469L-US Diskless System High-performance 4-bay NAS Server for SMBs
Pros:
This thing has speed, features and ease of use to satisfy any home use you can throw at it.
Cons:
They have precanned shares that can't be renamed or deleted. The backup utility assumes that you have another QNAP drive or compliant drive.
Overall Review:
I don’t normally write reviews, but I think I will here. What can I say …. I bought this for the primary reason of replacing my current NAS because it takes 2 ½ hours to backup my secondary computer. The other computers don’t have as many files, but they’re close enough. Well the QNAP blows it out of the water. I’ve reduced 2 ½ hours to 20 some minutes, getting at times 800Mb +/- write speed. But was disappointed with a little slower read times +/-.It is near the speed of computer to computer speed. I’m using 2 X 3TB WD Red drives in a Raid1 configuration. Once I get some more green I’ll get 2 more and put it in a Raid5. Once these drives are in I should have 8.3TB or so of space. This should last me an eternity, but then again I remember when I told my brother that a 110MB drive would last forever. Consult QNAP’s web site for compatible drives. Remember that a raid configuration doesn’t free you from having proper backups
To get these speeds it is not right out of the box. Once I powered it up to make sure it basically worked, I added a 2Meg memory stick to max it out at 3G of memory. I doesn’t cost much if you supply your own, but QNAP’s memory is probably only for businesses that want factory upgrades. Then I tweaked the Jumbo frames and decided on 7K frames after trial and error. I also gain some speed by not using any of the supplied apps, except I’ll activate the DNLA app.once I get time.
The only minus so far is that I can’t seem to figure out how to configure Sync, their automated backup program. My current NAS’ firmware seems to be out dated and doesn’t want to talk to the QNAP. I’m still investigating this and I’m sure there is a solution. I also would have liked to name my own shares to go with the purpose of them. Instead there are like 6 shares that you can’t delete or rename. I really don’t like someone telling me how my share structure should be.
As far as noise, it doesn’t make any more than my current pair of NAS’ that are sitting next to it. For my purposes the TS-469L is more than enough. No need to spend the extra for the PRO version. From what I remember reading this drive is meant for the high end home market or for small businesses. It should handle anything you can throw at it at home. I’ll put in the usual declaimer that your actual throughput will vary to your network capability and apps you run.
