This review is from: lenovo IdeaPad U410 (43762CU) 14" Ultrabook
Initial review when new:
-Long battery time
-Great specs for price, when it works
-Secondary recovery partition that is unnecessarily large (>20 GB) and can't be modified or else auto-recover will break (necessary since no DVD/CD drive for recovery)
-Lack of VGA display output or other (only HDMI)
-No removable battery (was told when I purchased it I could buy a secondary battery for long trips, turns out I was lied to by the salesperson)
-Wireless signal/range weaker than my 3 year old netbook.
With broken-ness and refused warranty repair (it's still under "warranty")
-Hassle of unreliability
-No VGA cable so not compatible with old monitors when trying to get data off of the computer (no screws to remove HDD either, so you HAVE to turn it on and use an external monitor if the screen is broken and can't open) which was VERY ANNOYING to find another monitor.
-Lenovo refuses to cover under warranty when it is a parts issue and wants to charge me to replace a part that will likely break again.
I bought a U410 for $550 (after rebate), so in terms of laptop specs, it was a great deal (also windows 7, not 8). I think overall, the performance for the price was great. However, my laptop screen hinge broke when all I did was open the laptop. Leave in the morning, computer on desk, as it has been all week, use a bit, close, no problems. Come back at night, open the laptop, and it breaks. No drops of any kind. And the support people says it's not covered under warranty even though it CLEARLY is a parts quality issue.
If Acer's repair policy is still the same, I would recommend buying from them, since in 2004, they had much better repair service for warranty. I have to say shipping the Lenovo laptop was much easier than Acer and easier than when I had to RMA for a Hitachi hard drive which gave a SMART fail within first 3 months (which was a pain).
