Works great, but why isn't the price dropping? 07/05/2013
I bought this in November 2011. It's been working great for me ever since, with one exception (see cons).
After more than a year of use, one of the sticks failed. I started getting really weird error messages, and when I ran memtest86, it showed failed RAM. I isolated the problem to one of the four sticks, removed the faulty stick and a working stick from the companion slot, and I was back up and running right away with 8GB of ram. I initiated a warranty replacement with corsair, and they shipped me a replacement set of all four sticks, and then I sent the set with the defective set back to them.
Total downtime was about an hour while I troubleshot the problem, then 2-3 days running on 8GB of ram. That's pretty darn good for a RAM failure, so I'm not deducting an egg.
In November 2011, I paid $89 for this on a shell shocker special. I don't remember for sure what the regular price was back then, but I think it was close to $150. 20 months later, it's selling for $149. I guess I got a better deal than I thought, because I would have expected the price to have dropped considerably almost two years later.
It doesn't show me as a "verified owner" because I bought this under a different account. Someone hacked into that account, tried and failed to order a gift card with my credit card, and newegg locked the account permanently. No amount of pleading with customer service or escalation to higher levels made any difference.
