This review is from: ZyXEL 500 Mbps Mini Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter Kit (PLA4201KIT)
Simple plug-and-play, you don't really need the driver CD unless you want to use the Firmware Update utility. Built well enough in terms of quality, and the speed was pretty good as well. Obviously not up to snuff with real Ethernet, but it gets the job done.
One of the adapters stopped working completely, no lights at all, and smells like burned electronics. Perhaps a capacitor blew? Guess I just got unlucky.
My other minor complaint is that it's a wall wart shape so you'll need to plug it in the lower outlet or upside down if you want to use both outlets on a wall socket; not too much of a annoyance but sometimes can be a bit tricky.
The way the LEDs work is someone redundant and slightly confusing; you have a Power LED, which is obvious, but then you have a "HomePlug" LED and a Network LED; the HomePlug LED flashes when communicating with another powerline adapter, and the Network LED flashes when communicating with the network. But, if you're communicating with the network, aren't you obviously communicating with the powerline adapter in the first place? Interesting choice to say the least, but it's in no way a deal breaker (unless you have a mental complex against excessive LEDs).
While these adapters are great and no-frills, wish one of them didn't die so suddenly. I've contacted ZyXEL support and will follow up on how well they do.
-2 eggs for the spontaneous failure. I still would recommend these despite the hardware issue.
