solid board - when no DOA 10/21/2013
Good price for a dual socket Xeon board with 16 DIMM slots. Solid and stable (note video issue in cons) using dual E5-2609 v2 CPU's with Server 2012 Hyper-V on the latest ASRock BIOS (v1.4 as of this writing). Seems tolerant of different RAM modules - have tried different types of registered DIMM's with different speeds (1333 and 1600) and voltages (1.35V and 1.50V) and it has run them all without issue.
2 of 4 boards received were DOA. One would not power on at all, the other hung on boot before it even got to display the BIOS splash screen. ASRock tech support only provided a standard troubleshooting checklist, all of which anyone who builds systems would have done before contacting them. NewEgg took them back without question. We have also seen the previously mentioned erroneous reporting of CPU temps. Even in the BIOS it will sometimes report a temp of 80C on socket two when the socket is empty. And in the IPMI web interface the reported CPU temp does not always match the temp reported in the BIOS. Also saw some server lockups in the Server 2012 console using the embedded graphics. Put in a cheap AMD card and the lockups disappeared. No issue with lockups in console RDP connections or connections to VM's running on Hyper-V - just on the console itself.
Test your board within NewEgg's 30 day return window so you don't have to hassle with ASRock for a warranty replacement. Put in a third party video card. The embedded graphics leave a lot to be desired, even for a server. Despite what seems like a long list of cons, we are building more servers with these boards. Once you get a good one and put in alternate video, they do run well as long as you are not hung on on the CPU temp reporting issue - perhaps that will be fixed by a BIOS update someday.
