Decent WD NAS for audio/video 12/09/2013
This review is from: WD 2TB My Cloud Personal Network Attached Storage - NAS - WDBCTL0020HWT-NESN
The greatest thing about electronics these days is that the manufacturers are making it easier and easier to get set up. This WD My Cloud 2TB NAS is no different. Set up was a breeze. More like plug and play. I love it.
Configuration was also simple. I plugged in the power, then the ethernet to my router and it automatically found an update to the firmware and updated itself. I hate it when I have to do manual firmware updates so this was a great Pro for me.
Not only was it simple to get it up and running on my network, but using the interface via web browser was also slick. So far, I think this NAS has the fastest responsiveness via web browser.
I used this NAS strictly for audio/video streaming because that's what a lot of people do. Storing data such as documents, pictures, etc. doesn't require as much power or storage as audio and video files.
Video: I have a simple set up for video. I have my SMART TV in the 2nd living room and a Western Digital TV Live! in the 1st living room with a 42" LCD TV that I stream to daily. Before having a NAS, I used my PC in the office to stream all video/audio files to both the TV's. Now with this WD My Cloud 2TB NAS, I don't need to power the PC on at all! Saving me $$ from electricity.
Anyways, because the WD 2TB NAS includes a processor, streaming to both the SMART TV and the WD Live TV media player was flawless. As soon as I plugged in the WD 2TB NAS into my network, both the SMART TV and the WD Live TV media player were able to connect to it.
Streaming was great for both devices. The only issue I had (more of it in the CONS) was having multiple devices listening or watching the same movie. But still not a real con since most of the time you'll be streaming different video or audio files.
Another pro: I was able to get it working with my Android phone and of course my laptop and PC in the office room.
Not really a con, but I'd thought to include it just in case people do use it this way.
I tried streaming the same video file in 1080P to 3 devices, SMART TV, WD Live TV media player and my android phone...and I saw stuttering! Yes..stuttering! Now, I can see why because there's multiple variables including not enough processing power, bandwidth in my network, etc. but still...it's something I encountered.
Outside of my network, 1080P struggled to stream and produce audio at the same time. There was too much lag to enjoy the movie and most of the time, the audio and video was not in sync.
When streaming just audio (like MP3's), it was flawless again. Even the higher quality MP3's with higher bitrates (above CD rates) played flawless both within my network and outside my network.
Another little con is it came in white. All my electronics are black which I prefer.
I feel like it's getting to the point where people aren't looking to get an electronic device with the fancy specifications (like 2GB memory, 1.2GhZ dual core, etc.). The matter of the question is, "does it work for me?"
I tried to include as little specs as possible in this review simply because I think everyone should have a NAS in their homes but not everyone is "technically" savvy enough to understand all the numbers and what they mean.
So, to answer your question: if you need a reliable network storage device that plugs into your router and will be able to provide you with a central location to store your data, whether it be digital copies of movies, music files, pictures, documents or anything you can save onto a regular hard drive, this WD My Cloud 2TB Personal Cloud Storage (WDBCTL0020HWT-NESN) can do it for you!
It is easy to get set up (almost plug and play) and you don't have to be technically savvy to understand that you can stream from it. Besides, if you know you want to stream from a device, you probably have a big picture of what you want anyways. The question is can this device to it for you.
The answer is YES! It comes from a reliable company (Western Digital), the build quality is excellent. It gives you what you need to store and share data files (including audio, video, documents, pictures) and more options for security if you need it.
Yes, this one was given to me to review but I'm keeping this one on my network because it just works for me.
