Powerful router! No NAT Loopback causes issues for servers 01/09/2014
This review is from: BUFFALO AirStation Extreme AC 1200 Gigabit Dual Band Wireless Router - WZR-1166DHP
This router has an impressively powerful WiFi connection. Range is very adequate. Have it on one end of a long rectangular shaped single-story house and the signal is still very strong and decently fast on the opposite end of the house.
Advanced GUI(user interface) is not too hard to understand. A few confusing bits, but can be figured out by either using Google or using included help blurbs.
Lack of NAT Loopback makes it hell to host a Linux server and even more of a pain to host IP-based game-servers such as Minecraft. If you plan on using anything that requires public-IPs, such as a server, do not get this router unless you intend to install an alternative firmware. This product does support DD-WRT which allows you to add NAT Loopback features, but it does void warranty. The standard pre-installed firmware does not support NAT Loopback at all, according to both tech-support and official technical specs. No intention to add it is planned.
This is compared to my previous router, a 1-year old Linksys E1200 which barely had any signal 3/4s of the way down the length of the house and speed suffered massively even when moving to the next room.
