Have-to-Have for Blu-Ray Movies 02/22/2014
This review is from: CyberLink PowerDVD 13 Ultra
Excellent quality Blu-Ray playback. This appears to be the only software that can play Blu-Ray movies.
I owned Cyberlink 10, 11 and 12. In each case, they quit playing Blu-Ray DVDs soon after the next edition was introduced; thus the Blu-Ray software appears to work for about 12-13 months but there is no statement to this effect from Cyberlink. Also, Cyberlink now informs users that Windows 8 will not play DVDs, so it appears that, if you use 8, you'll have to buy this downloadable software to watch movies on disc. If none of that bothers you, this software is, in my opinion, excellent for playing Blu-Ray movies.
Blu-Ray is Sony's monopoly and Cyberlink appears to be the only software that will play Blu-Ray discs. You'll need it if you use Window 8 or 8.1. There is no open-source software that can play Blu-Ray.
We thank you for your review.
We are not sure what you are referring to when you say that your previous versions of PowerDVD quit playing Blu-ray Discs. If you install the latest free patch updates for these versions of PowerDVD at the below link, they will support and play the latest Blu-ray Disc titles. A full upgrade to the latest version is not required to play the latest Blu-ray Discs for these versions.
You are correct that Windows 8 “out of the box” does not support DVD or Blu-ray Disc playback, but that has nothing to do with CyberLink. That decision was left up to Microsoft. However, DVD and Blu-ray playback under Windows 8 is available in PowerDVD from version 12 and beyond.
