BIOSTAR|HI-FI A85W 04/11/2014
The BIOSTAR|HI-FI A85W A85 FM2 R is a quality mainboard with solid state capacitors. It went together and fired up without a hitch the day it arrived. It is ideal with the combined CPU/GPU, an HDMI port and a PCI slot (for a satellite tuner card) as a media computer. It is ideal for the 10-50Mb tv video rates from satellite feeds and compared to FTA set top boxes it is a powerful dude. My prior 2 core AMD Athlon 64 X2 5800+ on a Gigabyte mb was often pushed above 90% cpu usage while the inexpensive 4 core AMD A8-5600K Trinity on this board runs at less than 20% cpu usage. A pair of (Biostar unlisted) 1866Mhz Gskill 2Gig slices of memory was sufficient along with a left over 60Gig OZ SSD.
This board was a pleasant surprises in how much technology has advanced, especially considering its price. In fact, it was a real steal at $57, but if you are not aware of what APU and FM2 are all about do your homework first. The Newegg 30 days is far more than necessary to verify any board’s acceptability.
It is not for serious gaming without a high end video card, which would ignore its most practical use. When sending audio over HDMI to the TV don’t expect it to be present on your monitor speakers or on S/PDIF. My previous AMD based Gigabyte mb setup had the same limitation.
