Overall Review:
As part of my political job I handle databases of many gigabytes on a daily basis, and need back them up. Consequently I have three terabyte+ disk systems attached to my laptop via USB. My laptop has two USB 3.0 ports, so I wanted a hub. This hub is ideal – I can attach my three drives to the hub and free up a USB port on my laptop. And, it provides power to one of otherwise unpowered disks.
On receiving the hub I ran some diagnostics to see how big a hit it would cause in backup speed. Logically one would expect some hit because there is another port for data to traverse. The data indicates otherwise – read and write speeds through this hub are actually faster than going directly to the laptop's built-in USB ports. Go figure.
I use Linux (Ubuntu 14.04) and tested speeds with the dd utility, reading 2048 blocks of 4 MiB. Here are the results:
write, with hub, 8GiB file:
8589934592 bytes (8.6 GB) copied, 98.5147 s, 87.2 MB/s
write, direct, 8GiB file:
8589934592 bytes (8.6 GB) copied, 103.329 s, 83.1 MB/s
read, with hub, 8GiB file:
8589934592 bytes (8.6 GB) copied, 102.382 s, 83.9 MB/s
read, direct, 8GiB file:
8589934592 bytes (8.6 GB) copied, 103.345 s, 83.1 MB/s
Considering that this hub can be had for about fifteen bucks with proper shopping, it's a great deal.
