Love it to death 11/30/2016
This review is from: Synology DS216+II Diskless System Network - Storage
Pros:
Very versatile file server with an enormous number of convenience features (I can't even begin to list them). I don't know how I lived without a file server for so long.
+ Great operating system (DSM) with great web interface
+ Intel processor for maximum application compatibility
+ Upgradeable RAM with a bit of elbow grease
+ Sleek, good looking, small form-factor
+ Highly active community with plenty of 3rd party application development
+ Can run Docker, so it can run pretty much anything
+ Decent tech support
+ Applications for Windows, Mac, etc. to interface with your Synology services. I personally love the backup solutions.
Cons:
- Installing 3rd party packages can be troublesome. There are issues with trying to set up permissions for each new service, so its sometimes easier to just run everything from Docker -- this takes a bit of technical know-how.
- The stock RAM is not enough for certain use cases. Might have to shell out about $30 for a RAM upgrade.
Overall Review:
- She does NOT like losing power unexpectedly. I'm not sure if this is appropriate as a "Con", because this is probably true of all file servers. Get yourself a UPS so it has time to shut down safely.
