Very Quiet 11/27/2006
I bought this drive to serve as a secondary storage drive. My main criteria were that it had to 1) work without errors, and 2) most importantly had to be QUIET. My current Dell 4700 is extremely quiet except if the processor fan kicks in when gaming.
This drive produces almost NO noise on it's own (certainly less than anyone's most quiet power supply and processor fans). It's pretty fast to for a 8MB cache. I chose this drive over the 16MB cache YS version because it's supposed to run quieter and cooler. See comments on temperature below.
I'd give this a 5, however, I wouldn't say that any 7200RPM drive >250G runs "cool". I first mounted this inside the case piggy-backed onto another 160GB drive (my only choice). It ran at least 55C, and caused my processor fan to kick in right away (which defeated the purpose of trying to get a quiet drive). I've since purchased an external Hard Drive case to mount the drive into (Vantec Nextar eSATA), which has brought the temperature down to the more respectable 40-47C range even without a fan. Now, all is well and I can't hear noise.
I'm sure that this drive might do better when mounted inside the case as a STAND-ALONE drive. I would not recommend piggybacking two large drives, especially in a case with not much active cooling like my Dell.
