This review is from: Half Life 2: Orange Box PC Game
Pros:
If you're new to the Half Life 2 series, this is a great deal.
Valve's polish really shows. The Source engine looks beautiful with its latest updates and is very efficient. I can crank every setting to the max, including 16xQ CSAA and 16x AF and still get close to triple-digit frame rates @ 1680x1050.
It's about time that we are seeing boxed games *default* to DVDs, I hate needing 5+ CD's to install each game.
The Steam app is actually pretty useful. You can install any games you have purchased on any computer w/o needing the media or product keys.
Cons:
If you already own HL2 and Episode 1, this really is just the $xx Episode 2 bundled with the $20 Team Fortress 2. Portal is too short to market as a full game and since I suck too much to play online multiplayer, I really just paid $xx for Ep2 and Portal, which is standard retail price.
Steam, as useful as it is, does not need start at boot. Why is that every software vendor assumes that their application needs to start at boot and run in the background continuously? (Yes I know you can disable this, just making a point).
Overall Review:
The "gifting" of HL2 and Episode 1 is a cool concept and a great marketing technique. It's nice to see companies like Valve that make quality and innovation their top priorities.
