Good Video Editor For Novice 12/17/2019 8:01:01 PM

Pros: Easy to use, three editing modes quick, guided and expert. Editing features for video and sound to include some filters.

Snappy performance on Windows 10 (AMD Ryzen 5, Radeon Rx 570, 16gb Ram, SSD.

4K and HD video support.

Cons: Some edit feature to video did not work well such as lightness and contract.

Render or burn to Disc (DVD) on Standard Definition. No option for creating HD Bluray.

Overall Review: I created and edited and create videos and burned to DVD for church about 10 years ago. I had several video editors (pro editions) with a lot of features. These editors did just about everything I wanted and could even fix video and sound on bad videos. The only problem and reason I quit producing videos is because these video editors were slow and prone to crash on Windows Vista and Windows 7. I would be in the middle of editing a video and the software would hang or crash. It also took 40 minutes to over an hour to render one video for DVD.

I experienced zero problems with Adobe Premier Elements. Premier Elements does not have near the capability of the professional editors but is ideal for the home novice. It is easy to use and I did not need any tutorials or help to get started. I imported and edited a video, added a title and some transitions and was finished in about 20 minutes. I also made a video collage of pictures of my parrots. The timeline editing worked best for me because that is what I was familiar with. Rendering video was quick and flawless. One negative is I had a video that was slightly dark and no matter how I tried to lighten it up with the editing features, I could not get the lighting correct. I tried the auto feature for lightness and contrast which only made the video worse. Tried setting lighting to max and it just barely lightened the video. Limited number of special effects.

I did like the fact that you don't need a lot of help with this product. The menus are easy to find and features are easy to use. If you don't want to spend a lot of time learning how to edit video and just want a product that will guide you through the process than this is a good product. Once you are comfortable with editing videos you can switch to expert mode.

All in all, if you want to make home videos, dvds, videos to post or share videos, this product is easy to use and you can edit and create your videos with little effort.

Overall Review: I use the full version of Photoshop and bought this for my grand daughter for Christmas to get into photo editing. I used Photoshop Elements several years ago before I move to Photoshop.

Pros: Easy to use.
Easy to transport to other machines.
Digital delivery is great for machines that don't have a standard optical drive.

Cons: Not as advanced as other options (according to my wife).
A bit slow on older systems (to be expected as software always has hardware requirements).

Overall Review: So I am NOT an artistic person and video and photo editing is something I generally leave to my wife (she's an architect and is quite skilled at photoshop and video editing etc.). However, I wanted to try the product myself and then have my wife give it a go. This review is going to be written from the perspective of a total novice who has never used any kind of visual software other than Powerpoint (work presentations that always looked pretty terrible).

So the download and install of the product is pretty simple. Adobe forces you to make an account but then it follows you around. Basically with your login and password you have access to the product for...well...as long as Adobe exists as a company. I figure they're going to be around for awhile so that works pretty nicely for simplicity or if I ever buy another MacBook. By the way, this review is for the software installed on a 2011 era MacBook Air. It is a bit sluggish but nothing terrible.

My first goal was to capture and edit some video content from online. In the past I used freeware stuff that would pop up asking me to upgrade every three seconds or only allowing like 3 tasks a day etc. I'll be honest...I'm pretty terrible at this stuff but the program does a good job holding a newbie's hand through the process of editing. I moved on to putting together a video clip starting with the ultrasound video of my son and then progressing through video clips we've taken as he's grown to the age he is now (4).

The program was pretty easy to use. I tried switching to a more pro-level on the software but I kind of got lost with what I was doing. My wife was able to learn and adapt quickly and was MUCH faster editing some of her videos from work parties and even a couple of our son and she used some great transition effects etc. However, (remember I'm writing this from my perspective where I don't even know the proper terms of the elements used) I was a bit slower and my end results weren't too terribly fancy but they did manage to make my wife and my mom tear up a bit (I'm going to attribute that to my son and not the software). I was able to merge the clips together with ease even though they were multiple formats (whatever crazy extensions those ultrasounds were from the doctor's office, iPhone, samsung galaxy, and my wife's fancy dslr camera) and they didn't look "chopped" (if that makes any sense). Basically when you look at videos that have been clipped together you can kind of tell the different sizes and looks and it just kind of takes away from it. Maybe it's because all of these videos were from pretty modern sources and my wife and I always video or take pictures in landscape view but the clip came together looking very consistent.

I tried my hand at some other software like iMovie and Final Cut but...well...as I said I don't really know what I'm doing. This software though...honestly if I wanted to edit videos regularly this would be the software I would use. For not knowing a single thing about what I'm doing I had a video at the end that was coherent and I actually saved it and my wife sent it to my in-laws (trust me, my wife is picky about photo and video quality so if she sent it out it isn't half bad).

Not Photoshop for Dummies Apparently 12/12/2019 12:24:59 PM

Pros: It does some nice things such as removing objects from backgrounds, or changing colors of items, if you take the time to figure out how.

Cons: The software is sluggish on my machine (2700X, 32GB, 1080Ti, NVME SSDs).
The photo manager part was incapable of managing my 30K photos located on my home server, again being sluggish and incapable of dealing with the large number of pics, whereas other photo managers work fine.

Overall Review: I'm not a Photoshop expert, but have use the full product in the past for some limited uses. My expectations of this product was it was a cut down version of the full Photoshop made easier for novice photo editors. However, doing some fairly simple tasks still required tutorials and online read-me articles.

The software itself ran quite poorly and the interface hides the needed tools at most times.

I was able to edit a few photos to my liking, but felt overall it was a taxing experience. Perhaps its a big upgrade from previous versions of Elements, but in evaluating it on it's own merits, I expected better.

Cons: - Requires an Adobe account
- Lackluster installer
- Does not support Windows 7 or 32-bit versions of Windows

Overall Review: My initial impressions of Photoshop Elements 2020 were not amazing. I was not exactly thrilled that an Adobe account is required, and I managed to break the installer on my first attempt at installing the program. The second installation attempt went much better and it is worth noting that the installation on my laptop went perfectly on the first try.

Upon opening the program to the home screen my concerns grew; until I realized that what I had initially thought were ads were actually tutorials and new feature notices. This is one of the greatest features of this program: tutorials. There are tutorials for everything from the basics of how to crop a photo to more advanced functions like photomerging and beyond.

Another nice feature of Photoshop Elements 2020 is the inclusion of two editing modes. For basic color corrections or cropping or simple editing there is "Quick" mode. Conversely "Expert" mode has all the tools needed to finely dial in colors and layer your way to a Photoshop masterpiece. My one complaint is that the control schemes (mainly panning around a zoomed picture) is not consistent between the two modes.

In terms of performance, I give it a solid "meh". While the program chewed through some large panoramic photomerges quite well, I still experienced a few hitches and catches while using the Quick Selection Tool. Normally I wouldn't complain about this as it does have to do a fair bit of fancy background work to actually figure out what I want (which it does quite well), however, Photoshop Elements 2020 performed identically on both my 6 year old laptop and my very high end desktop. But that being said, the program ran quite well on my lower end laptop. A rather small feature that I want to draw some attention to is the ability to tell the program to update on exit. I cannot count how many times I have delayed a plugin or module update while I was working on something only to forget all about the update by the time I was finished. Being able to tell the program to update when I close it is something I wish all programs allowed.

Overall, this is an excellent software that not only can allow a novice user to get started editing photos but also has the capability to allow an advanced user to complete complicated jobs. I think Photoshop Elements 2020 offers a lot of value for the money and should be a core piece of software on any photo-lovers computer.

Pretty powerful and easy to use 12/9/2019 4:18:09 PM

Pros: The guided options make fixing up a photo really easy. I used this to cleanup some photos my wife took which had red eye or the flash resulted in some strange lighting. Seeing them cleaned up earned me some brownie points!

The effects you can add are really neat and easy. Blurred background or cropping is much easier than the other applications I have tried and quit in the past. My use case is primarily cleaning up our photos, but some of the edits you can do are pretty cool.

I can't say enough about the step-by-step edits. It may take you a few tries until you get it right for you, but it is worth it and incredibly quick for a novice user.

Cons: I have not found one yet. Sure the edits can take a few tries, but I expected a learning curve as this software (and brand) is powerful!

Overall Review: The Elements line makes this expensive and complex software accessible to regular people. I may have to check out some of the other products.

As a Premiere Pro CC User, I'll say this software is pretty great 12/6/2019 11:20:37 AM

Pros: This is a great, one-time (albeit slightly feature dimished) way to get most of what you could ever want from Adobe Premiere for way way cheaper.

I think the number one thing about Elements is the price. You may say, "hey it's still kinda pricey" and I'd agree with you. That said, look at what you pay on a recurring basis to get Premiere Pro CC.

Even though the interface is slightly different and I was a little unfamiliar with where things initially were, I was able to work out in seconds where basic trim, and effect features were located and how to use them. This suite definitely will work for most standard home level users who want to cut together some family videos or even things to post to YouTube. The tutorials included also are really helpful for beginners.

I said it before above, but seriously, you only have to pay for it once. That's pretty nice for those who don't use Premiere every day or as a way to make a living making videos (heck, depending on what you're doing, you may be able to use this for that as well). Overall, it's a good alternative to paying a bunch of money for Pro if you aren't really needing all of the specific features of Pro. i'll outline some cons below in case you're curious what that would entail.

I'd honestly need some more time to play around with this, but I may end up dropping my Pro CC subscription in favor of this as it'll accomplish all of what I need when making simple YouTube videos for my channel.

You also get access to pretty much all standard outputs if you're planning on showing a family movie on the holidays or uploading to video streaming service.

Access to a full range of effects and transitions are available which is super handy.

Cons: While the UI is intuitive, I found the layout annoying and weird to use in some of the formats. Expert view is about the only one I'd really advise using as "Quick" feels sort of clunky and not in any way "easier" than just having a standard timeline with tracks/channels like every other editing software.

Cost is both a Pro and a Con in this review. It's still a lot of money for something that you could probably get freeware or cheaper in other products. That being said, if you're married to Adobe products, it's way cheaper than Premiere Pro. Do with that information what you will.

Video format support is limited. While Pro will essentially support nearly every video format in the known universe (and possibly more), you're sort of stuck with the standard ones and may have to resort to converting from some odd formats if your camera isn't recording in a standard like mp4 or the like.

One the same computer, some of the features are way slower to load than from Premiere Pro. It's kind of annoying but I'm lumping that in the "you get what you pay for" column. Waiting to load could be a real downer for some people so I figure I'd mention it as I noticed it when trying to export and also render videos.

Overall Review: This delivers a lot of what the previous versions of Premiere Elements gives you. Most of the features in an individual license that you don't have to keep paying for month to month. I've been overall pleased so far but I've not really had time to fully exhaust the options and features during this review process. I will update if something changes and I find some things less good or really amazing.

Ideal software for novices to quickly get up to speed on the basics 12/5/2019 7:38:04 AM

Pros: Good price and ease of use for someone looking to dip their toes in the water of making family movies or creating an online YouTube or Vimeo channel.

Very quick to get up and running.  There are a few guided modes to get you started, running from a total novice to an advanced user.  If you choose the novice option, the program does a lot of the work for you and provides you tutorials on the harder stuff.  If you choose the advanced options, it gets out of your way and lets you get your hands into everything right off the bat.  It's easy to switch back and forth between the modes if you run into an area where you're not quite sure what to do.

There are built-in templates with options pre-selected to also get you up and running quicker. Some of them are kind of cheesy, but sometimes cheesy is what you're looking for.

There are also built-in settings to easily adjust your video's look and feel, such as contrast, brightness, and image stabilization, which is pretty much the bare minimum anybody will need to do with most of their videos.

Tons of effects, scene transitions, and the usual flashy add-ons that people like to use.  I'm not a big fan of flashy effects, but they're here in case you are.

Automatically scans your computer for content and has the ability to recognize and categorize or "tag" specific things (people, objects) for easy searching. This is a great feature if you have a lot of content that isn't organized well based on years of accumulated but randomly saved/sorted videos like me.

Has the ability to upload videos to your YouTube channel, saving you time at the end of your workflow.

Cons: This is a pro and a con, but if you opt for the advanced mode without knowing what you're doing then it's easy to get lost quickly. Make sure you build up to the advanced stuff, don't just jump right in if you don't have any video editing experience.  Remember you can switch back into an easier mode if you need to.

Not a lot of file or website export options.  If you want to get very granular/technical for what device you're exporting videos for, you'll need to play some with the settings. Otherwise, the usual export options that most novices would need (e.g. YouTube) are already here & ready to go.

The software can be kind of slow at times. This is extremely hardware-dependent, and all video editing applications have this same limitation.  This goes without saying, but the faster your CPU process and the more RAM you have, the faster any video editing application will run.

Overall Review: I've been using this to edit videos of my kids for the past few days.  It's dead simple to use and has all of the features an entry-level video editor would be looking for.  If you want a quick & easy video editing application to get you up and running, I'd definitely recommend this.  If you're thinking of hopping on the YouTube subscriber channel bandwagon to dip your toes in to being an "influencer" of some variety, or if you have younger kids who want to try their hands at the same, then I'd definitely start with this and work your way upwards to the more professional stuff if luck favors you.

I'll also note there are plenty of great videos of people using the software on YouTube, so if you want to see how to do something and can't quite figure it out, give YouTube a shot and you'll likely find the help you need there, too.
