Update: Expanded battery bent case 9/16/2018 5:48:55 PM

Pros: Specs
Weight
Aesthetics

I wanted a fast and light laptop, ostensibly for work but if it can play most of the things in my steam library with high quality, then who am I to argue? This laptop does those things perfectly, no surprises.

I really like the power button, which indicates if you're running on integrated or dedicated graphics with color, and the Intel tool to control which software uses which is easy and useful.

Bluetooth is useful for getting one image off my phone quickly.

Cons: After three years of ownership, the battery expanded so much that it bent the aluminum case. The case is about 1.5x as wide as it's supposed to be , maybe 2X. I'm just glad all the components still work. Not happy.

Screen feels flimsy, I feel like I need to be very careful with it. This is the trade off for light weight, and the light weight is more important to me, but it is something to consider.

Keyboard can't be set to white. 95% of the LEDs under the keys will be white under this setting, but 5% (mostly in the bottom row) can't quite make it--some have a strong blue tinge while others have a strong green tinge. I had to change from white to something like ice-blue to make this less noticeable, but there's still green lights on the bottom row. I'm not sure if this is an issue with all keyboards or just mine, but I'm quite irritated with it.

Overall Review: It's similarly spec'd to my 3-year old home-built desktop, which cost about the same amount of money back then. But you're paying for engineering, portability, and a battery.

Windows 8 is not my favorite thing in the world but with a pretty small amount of work you can make it behave pretty much identically to windows 7, and there are a couple new features which are appreciated. Anyways, if you want to use Windows you should upgrade to Windows 10 for free this July regardless which version you have currently.

I'm not really one for "flashy," and in that way this laptop is perfect. It looks like a thing of quality without being ostentatious.

The fan kicks on and can be distracting (in my dead-silent office), but it's actually kind of an interesting tool--an indicator for CPU usage greater than 5-10%. It's alerted me to a locked up program once or twice.

Good Memories; Decent for it's time 4/11/2018 10:52:04 AM

Pros: - Relatively lightweight in comparison to other gaming laptops
- Good GPU for it's time, still plays games nicely (when it doesn't thermal throttle)
- Form factor is nice, excellent keyboard with good travel and nice visuals

Cons: - Pathetic battery life when uncharged, only got worse with time, heavy power brick
- Some Ethernet issues fixed with driver updates
- Mediocre trackpad
- Slow HDD
- Gets extremely hot due to poor ventilation design, especially as time goes on
- Thick bezels
- 60hz panel
- Easily tracks fingerprints and oils, can look ugly very quickly
- Difficult to access the internals
- Fans are extremely loud

Overall Review: Was an expensive investment for me just starting out undergraduate education. Was an excellent machine for the first two years of usage, but the battery life and increasingly poor temperatures were cause of frustration. MSI also included a bunch of bloatware that improved little to nothing about the experience of the computer, and eventually the LED software malfunctioned and I was stuck with the default red back lighting. It's a light and thin gaming laptop, but it's not as light as ultrabooks and not as powerful as heavier laptops. I eventually built a desktop and I hardly ever use this thing anymore other than for light productivity, which it still excels at.

The biggest issue that hinders this laptop is how hard it thermal throttles. Over the years the chassis has just not been the best at removing heat, and dust buildup has made this device a shadow of it's former self. It still works great in the beginning, but it gets so hot that it throttles extremely hard and makes working on it very uncomfortable. Gaming has been difficult due to throttling, and it's sad to see such a strong machine choke itself to death when it has such a good potential with the hardware it's rocking. Games like League of Legends which used to run in excess of 200 frames now sputter down to 40s and 30s when overheated and there is sadly no way to improve this as the fans are literally spinning for dear life trying to keep this computer from burning to the ground. Other thins that suck are the trackpad, and the incredibly slow HDD, but those are just compromises coming from a Mac.

Not all is bad though. The keyboard is excellent, the screen is good (if only 60 hz) and it's an enjoyable gaming experience when not overheating. I had loads of great memories with this device, and plenty of gameplay hours over the years. It is definitely quite light compared to other gaming devices, but it's no ultrabook.

All in all, this laptop was a lesson in why gaming laptops are considered poor choices. It can still work, and I plan to continue using it when needing a slightly more powerful mobile solution, but I will never purchase a gaming laptop ever again. The frustration is absolutely not worth the effort.

Now Useless 1/4/2018 7:16:27 PM

Pros: Worked well for a short time. Powerful and good picture.

Cons: Short battery life. Screen no longer turns on after 2 years of light use (no gaming) and never leaving the same living room. MSI no longer repairs this laptop so to me it is useless. I am not confident in repairing computers and was told to find a motherboard online by MSI, seems to be ~$500, which is half of what I paid for the computer.

Overall Review: Definitely not. Was willing to pay for repairs, but MSI does not offer any type of service for my 2 year old computer.

Solid Performer... until the warranty expires 9/18/2017 10:55:13 AM

Pros: A solid little performer with good specs.
Slim, light, powerful, what more could you ask for? Well, check below if you're sure you want to sink money into something from a company like MSI...

Cons: -MSI purchased cheap Chinese batteries for their products. After the warranty expires, expect swelling and damage to your case or maybe even your crotch lit on fire! Since it's a non-user replaceable battery, you won't notice the swelling until it gets to the point where it's legitimately dangerous. The battery health check will still show you at 80-90% health while in actuality, it's a time bomb over your crotch.

-Customer support is non-existent with a CEO that closed his email account and phone number at the company. If you ask for a supervisor, they'll just hang up on you.

-Case is cheaply made. Mine came with a defective corner that wasn't bent correctly. Probably should have taken it as a sign that MSI wouldn't repair/replace it.

-To upgrade anything, you have to take out the motherboard. Everything is top mounted and this will void your warranty.

-Screen is merely "OK". Decent viewing angles but colors are a solid meh.

-May as well take the hit on weight/price and buy something from a company with a reputation for taking care of their customers.

-Battery swelling is a widespread problem. Check any MSI forums and you'll see posts being deleted as fast as possible.

Good quality where it counts. Keyboard is pretty but durable 9/12/2017 9:49:15 PM

Pros: For $1500 it's okay to have high expectations. Performance-wise I have no complaints. The screen maintains a great level of visibility at all brightness levels. Relatively high FPS for newer games as long as you keep settings reasonable. Plays older games ridiculously fast. Sleek, slim design that feels cold to the touch at room temperature. No disk drive, but that's why you have a desktop (you have a desktop, right?)

This computer is great for doing homework, writing programs, setting up virtual environments, or anything else that requires a reliable computer. The keyboard is pretty with transitional lighting (blue <=> red (with purple in between), red <=> green (with orange in between), green <=> blue (with teal in between). The transitional lighting effects are really pretty. You can also set up a different color for each of the 3 separate zones for a rainbow effect.

Cons: Even though it's good at what it does, don't consider this product to be a desktop replacement. I've had issues in the past with the wireless card not picking up any signal. To fix it, turn off the computer entirely, leave it off for 5 minutes and then try again.

Although the keyboard adds to the bells & whistles and expensive feel, it's flimsy to use in practice. Be very gentle with it. If you're not careful and type too quickly or if you ever mash the keys while gaming, the keys will fly right off. Just treat it like a delicate flower. I would recommend plugging in an external mechanical keyboard if you're planning on typing on it all day, but it's fine to write an email or two in a pinch. I wouldn't buy this laptop for the keyboard if you're planning on doing heavy-duty typing on it long-term.

Overall Review: The backpack it came with is pretty nice and I still use it. Still in one piece. Not frayed or any serious signs of wear after 2 years.

Charger hasn't broken on me yet which is nice because that's usually the first thing to go.

Never ran into resource issues with this thing. Overall the fastest laptop I've ever owned for a pretty decent price. Best bang-for-your-buck I would say. I would expect this laptop to continue to work without major issues for at least another 2-3 years.

When the spacebar permanently broke, MSI support quickly sent me a new one, for free, no questions asked. 10/10 experience with MSI product support.

Huge power in a Light body 9/5/2017 6:34:40 PM

Pros: -Super fast for any game I threw at it on any setting and any resolution (Warhammer: Total War, Metro: Last light, Company of Heroes 2, Rainbow 6 Siege etc)
-Tons of space to store games/files
-Came with everything you need right out of the box (Mouse, Case, Back Pack, Headphones W/Mic, and other goodies)

Cons: Easy to work around/eventually solved:
-Nvidia drivers would continuously fail to install/update
-Wifi receiver is weak and would often cut out or slow considerably away from the source.

Glaring issues/Unresolved:
-Bluetooth does not work

Unimportant if Annoying:
-The little rubber feet fell off pretty quickly (Due to heat?)

Overall Review: Overall one of the better impulse purchases Ive ever made. Would give 5 stars, but the Bluetooth issue is something I worked to correct for several hours and ended up having to purchase a separate dongle all together.

Great at first. Did not hold up. 8/31/2017 8:15:05 PM

Pros: - Nice speeds at the time of purchase (2014)
- LED Keyboard is neat

Cons: Did not last. This laptop slowly continued to lose functionality until and now it's all but completely useless. Barely even lasted a year before hardware problems started popping up. First the wifi stopped working on it, then even the Ethernet became touch and go. HDMI port only works sometimes, the fans are insanely loud even on low usage and batter saver mode (dust free, I've cleaned it), and the processor and GPU now struggle with the same tasks it used to do flawlessly when I bought it. I take very good care of my computers too. Everything is up to date, no unneeded software, antivirus and regular scans, ect. Aesthetically it's mint, no dents or scratches, just internal problems.

Basically if you have a chance to buy one of these off a friend second hand, or find a refurbished model for sale, do not buy it. Tell the seller to e-waste this junk. I get that I can't expect a laptop to last forever, but for heavens sake getting more than 2 years out of something I payed 1200 for would be nice.
