I am running this A4-5300 on a cheaper FM2 MSI board.  I also have the ASRock board you listed, but I am using it with an A10 Trinity APU.  To answer your question, I think your assumption about compatibility is correct. The ASRock board should be compatible with the A4, as it is a lower wattage chip in the same family as my A10 Trinity.  I hope this helps.

My 12 year old is building a computer using an AMD A4 5300 CPU with an MSI mobo. He gets no video signal to the monitor. Does this CPU require a graphics card?

You do not need a graphics card. this is an apu so its purpose is to rid of the graphics card era LOL. however your issue is dealing with either the processor or the MSi build. If you built it try these trouble shoots, i found these out by experience:
1.) if your motherboaard is too tightly screwed to the casing then this will cause interruptions between the processor and mother board, so simply loosen the screws but where tight enough they wont come off
2.) try reinserting the processor this time check if anything is lifted up
3.) check the processor itself to see if any pins are bent or miss colored. if so bent, then get small and thin tweezers and straighten them.

Would this work with an older computer? My room mate has a presario SR 1920NX, and we are trying to upgrade his pc a bit. Been looking around for answers, but not having much luck. Thanks in advance!

Processors are very specific as to what motherboard they are compatible with.  What you have to look for is the socket type.  This is an FM2, thus it must go into a motherboard that accepts an FM2 processor.  Your SR 1920NX uses this processor: Athlon 64 (V) 3500+ 2.2 GHz Socket 939.  That means the processor has 939 pins.  That motherboard is not compatible with this processor.

Does this processor require additional thermal compound? It seems that the heatsink has some on it already

No, it does not. The thermal compound that comes pre-applied is more than enough. You most likely won't need to add fresh compound for at least 2-3 years, and by then you'll probably upgrade the CPU anyway. However, if you indeed decide to add fresh compound, make sure you clean off the old paste on the top of the CPU, and the bottom of the heat sync using rubbing alcohol.

Will this Processor fit into an AMD 2 socket?

AMD currently has 2 available processor socket types:
AM 2/2+/3/3+ and FM 1/2.
AM socket processors do not fit into FM socket boards, and likewise is the same for FM socket processors of AM boards.

So, as asked, I can not definitively answer your question because I'm not sure which "2" you are referencing.

This processor will fit into any FM2 (possibly any FM3) socket motherboard.

Do you think a 32bit os would be better than a 64bit os for this cpu? I know it will support a 64bit os, but would it run slower?

Yes, a 32-bit OS will indeed work on a 64-bit CPU. HOWEVER, you won't benefit from the full power of the CPU. I honestly HIGHLY RECOMMEND you just buy a 64-bit OS. I also HIGHLY RECOMMEND Win 7 over Win 8 or 8.1 at this time. I feel Windows 7 is better as I love a start menu. You can buy a Win 7 64-bit OEM for $99 or less depending on current promotions. There's no price difference between the 32-bit and 64-bit which makes more reason to get the 64-bit. Yes, most games, and applications are usually 32-bit, but those are just applications. The overall system will perform better with a 64-bit OS if you have a 64-bit CPU. It really makes no sense to run a 32-bit on a 64-bit CPU. That's almost wasting money on  a 64-bit CPU when you plan to install a 32-bit OS. I'm assuming you already have a 32-bit, and don't feel like paying for a 64-bit OS but honestly, bite the bullet, and do it. You'll be happier in the long run.

Sound Controllers usually are not built into CPUs but for the longest time neither was Video Controllers.  This CPU is designed to have a Video Graphics Processor built in along with the CPU.

Most of the time Sound Controllers are built onto whichever System Board you pair up with this Processor or you can buy a separate Sound Card you can put either in the PCI or the PCI express 1x slots on the System Board.  Hope this answers your question.

So i am thinking of building a computer for my mother and i am i very avid Intel person but need to build a small rig for very cheap. she will ONLY be playing facebook games and surfing the web alot. I know nothing about amd so would this little guy be enough to load up those webpages and facebook games snappy and fast? Thanks in advance. oh also, if you have any other recommendations (like something far better for only $10-$15 more) i would gladly be open to that. Thanks

I am a confirmed AMD user - I've built many boxes based on AMD, and I love the savings! Here's the thing: Intel & AMD vie for supremacy, and each comes out on top in different ways, but if you look at all the test data for each cpu, you could go crazy with the results. IMHO, AMD is always a solid performer, especially with the modest uses you have mentioned.

I had the A4-5300 in my computer for about a year (just upgraded) and never had a problem with video editing (the most cpu-intensive work I did).

Unfortunately not.  This processor has socket type FM2, and the processor in the computer you mentioned, AMD Phenom 9100e Quad-Core, has the AM2 socket type.  These two different socket types, FM2 and AM2, are not compatible with each other.
