First generation Ryzen

Pros: I overclocked my CPU to 4 GHz {all cores} on a x370 Taichi with 16 gig ram Samsung B die at 3000 MHz for stable operation on Windows 10. My temp do not go over 40 Celsius on a Corsair H100I AIO while gaming.

Cons: Overclocking the memory is a pain to do on Ryzen first Gen.

Overall Review: I would recommend this CPU if you can find it on sale, and coming from an older Gen. Intel or AMD CPU.

Still a fantastic CPU in 2019!

Pros: Finally built a new rig earlier this year around my still new (purchased from Newegg last year) 1700X and was pleasantly surprised at the outstanding performance. I mated it with an MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC m/b, RTX 2060 graphics card, a blazing fast 1TB M.2 NVMe SSD,and 16GB of PC3200 fast RAM. With 8 cores and 16 threads it kicks serious [expletive deleted] encoding h.264/h.265 videos or rendering 3D model scenes. It also handles games at 1080p in stride. I'm using an el cheapo Cooler Master 3-heat-pipe air cooler with a single fan (very quiet) and as long as I don't overclock it IT NEVER goes above 67°C and I live in tropical Thailand!

Cons: Only 2 cons. As with apparently all Gen 1 Ryzen CPUs it has a fictional turbo boost frequency. The 1700X is rated at 3.4Ghz with a claimed 3.8Ghz turbo boost frequency. In fact, whether gaming or encoding or 3D rendering, or whatever, mine has yet to go above 3.5Ghz turbo boost. That's not great but since the 3.5Ghz performance is outstanding it's not a deal breaker.

The 2nd con is that overclocking is a mixed bag. Yes it will overclock some, but with quickly elevating temps. This seems to be typical of Gen 1 Ryzen CPUs in general since AMD (and/or motherboard makers) implemented a brute force overclocking method that abandons the factory idle speed (2.2Ghz in this case) and forces the CPU to run all cores at the overclocked speed all the time. Yep, global warming time! While a bit of a disappointment it was still not a deal breaker considering its excellent performance running cool and quiet at its rated standard frequency.

Overall Review: Overall a still potent CPU in mid-2019, especially considering price and performance. Its 8 cores/16 threads configuration proved to be a fantastic performer, so much so that 8C/16T is quickly becoming the new standard configuration in the 2nd half of 2019 with both AMD and Intel. Gotta admit that with the 1700X's great performance it's hard to justify upgrading to a 3rd gen Ryzen until prices finally drop a bit.

Ryzen to The Occasion

Pros: This CPU runs very cool in my rig but I do blow enough air I have to screw my case down so that it does not move across my table.

Cons: I have not bought and extra just in case

Overall Review: I have built one heck of a Gaming PC with this guy as the backbone. With a ASUS ROG Strix Radeon RX 590 ROG-STRIX-RX 590 video card, 16G of DDR4 memory and a ASRock X470 Master SLI/AC AM4 AMD Promontory X470 SATA 6Gb/s ATX AMD Motherboard to start, I benchmark in the top 80% . I have ran this long enough to know what I am talking about and I dont OC. There is not a game out there that I cant breeze through, but if you must a faster I7 knock yourself out.

Great CPU

Overall Review: My unit was poorly packaged when sent to me. The box suffered a substantial amount of damage.
Luckily, the processor survived but if this is how they were treating my package others might not make it to the destination.
Also, remember this unit does not have a stock heat-sink. Make sure you have a heat sink ready for this.

Fantastic chip

Pros: - Brand new 8C/16T for only $190!
- 3.4 GHz with a some healthy room for OC (got mine up to 3.9)
- Doesn't run too hot (Take that, Intel!)
- Can upgrade to newer Ryzen CPUs because they use AM4 socket

Cons: - Not as much OC headroom as my old Bulldozer chip, really dependent on RAM

Super fast!

Pros: This is super fast. I do a lot of computer programming and as I understand it, the Ryzens handle calculations much faster than Intel. Faster than others!

Cons: none
