great CPU for intended workloads

Pros: 32 cores, 64-threads, will boost to 3.6ghz with 16 cores running at 100% (my application is licensed for 16 cores) using the stock automatic overdrive settings. comes with a Torx torque wrench to ensure proper tightening of the CPU retention plate. 64MB L3 cache on WX may help compute intensive workloads compared to 32MB on X-series. Supports ECC ram, which I did use, unlike Core i7/i9 X-series. The CPU itself is an impressively heavy chunk of rock...

Cons: really, the packaging is impressive but silly. If you could take out the inner plastic & foam and use the case for storage, it would be a bit better... but the inner plastic and foam is part of the frame and holds it all together, so all you can really do with it is throw it away. The box could have been 1/4 the size and still just as impressive.

Other Thoughts: Must install AMD Ryzen Master software to enable Dynamic Local Mode if your workload isn't using all 32 cores, even if you have no intention to overclock or customize any other settings. This puts your most active threads on the 16 cores that have direct memory access for best performance; Windows' thread scheduler is NUMA aware, but doesn't handle this processor's architecture well.

FOLLOW-UP: This CPU continues to impress; using a math-heavy analysis application, which costs a LOT more than the computer system to run it, I had done a lot of testing with a Core i7-7700k prior to building the TR system. Wanting to see which CPU architecture is better at running this workload, I re-ran the same sample file with 4 threads enabled same as on the i7. Result: i7 ran it in 263 seconds, TR took 218 seconds despite the i7's clock speed advantage (to be clear, real analysis jobs in this software take many hours to a couple of days, I didn't build the TR to save 45 seconds). While I'm sure some of that is due to the small 8MB L3 cache on the i7, this suggests the TR was indeed the better choice vs. the Core i9-9980XE.

Amazing, but not for gamers.

Pros: - Blistering multi-core performance
- Cheaper than its closest competition
- Easy to overclock
- Crazy fast CPU based RAID support
- Great value proposition (when you consider core count vs cost)

Cons: - Single-core performance could be better
- It's a power hog with a massive TDP (especially when overclocked)
- Pony up for an amazing cooler, because you're going to need it
- This level of power isn't cheap

Other Thoughts: This is absolutely NOT gaming CPU, even after activating gamer mode and reducing its core count. If you're purchasing it to game, prepare to be incredibly disappointed...however; if editing and transcoding video, compiling code, simulations, and churning through mountains of scientific data is your thing, prepare to be tickled pink. For these purposes, it's a monster.

Great product, bad price

Pros: Superfast, No hicups

Cons: Once I bought it, I later found out amzon had it for almost $700 less. That's a huge difference.

GREAT for compute heavy tasks!

Pros: High core count is GREAT for compute heavy tasks. 2990wx has by far the best price / performance workstation cpu currently available, October 2018.

Cons: AMD PSP (equivalent of Intel ME) is still a thing unfortunately. Hopefully in the future AMD will wise up and remove it, at least from compute oriented cpu's. Maybe a kind 400 lb hacker will find a way to disable PSP. If you need to avoid botnet POWER9 is your best option; consider the Raptor Talos II.

Other Thoughts: If you're looking at Ryzen 2, know your use-case:

>If you're primarily gaming, strongly consider a 2700x because it's a GREAT cpu and you'll be overpaying for cores you don't need if you choose Threadripper. Most games won't make use of the higher core count provided by Threadripper. By going with 2700x, spend the money you save to get better cooling and a better graphics card like Vega 56 or hold out for Navi.

>If you're both gaming and streaming or have mixed use gaming, software development, streaming, and video encoding, consider the 2700x (it's great) or the 2950x (16 core, 32 threads) or the 2920x (12 core, 24 threads).

>Go for the 2990wx if you're doing compute heavy tasks such as machine learning, heavy software development, or video encoding. The 2990wx is clocked lower, stock, than the 2700x, 2920x, 2950x. It's a workstation / compute cpu, there are better options for gaming.

>If you need support for ECC ram you should be looking at Epyc, not Threadripper.

It worked!! Just need to upgrade the bios.

Pros: Just got it to boot on a test bench. I had never set up an AMD before and it was simple as 1-2-3.

Cons: None yet

Other Thoughts: I am using the Asus ROG Zenith Extreme and 64 BG of g-skill 2933MHz memory F4-2933C16Q-64GFX
When I first tried to boot it just put itself in a loop checking CPU and memory. I downloaded the latest Bios (1402) renamed it ZE.CAP and used a USB drive to flash the bios. It then booted into the bios and recognized all 64BG of memory.
Everything seems right . I saw one review where the owner could not get his/her system to post. Flashing the bios worked for me.
Thanks

High expectations, poor results

Pros: The product comes with an amazing set of stats, all of those core sound beautiful. The amount of force needed to install the CPU have diminished, my Grandma could install this unit. The graphics are honestly beautiful. This is clearly one Heavy piece of metal!

Cons: Unfortunitly, the system would not post, first with an ASROCK Tachiai, then the beast of all motherboards the ASUS AMA X399 ROG ZENITH EXTREME! BUT ALAS NO POST? i TRIED VARIOUS VIDEO CARDS, Tried at least 6 sets of memory. The little display said C0 memory? I used the Cooler that AMD sugested. All to no avail.

Other Thoughts: Fortunately I was within the 30 day in house NewEgg exchange warranty. To me they new there would be problems, so they applied ther 30 day exchange only! When spending this sort of money, thet should apply the Refund warranty also, but it seems every time I com up with this problem they cough up the 30 day exchange only!I made a request that I would purchase a new motherboard and memory if they woud set it up for me, which I would be happy to pay for, but of course no reply.
If I do not get a posative response in the testing and assembling, of the CPU, on Motherboard, with new RAM I will unfortunitly
have to sell the proccesor.

This has got to be my most expensive attemps of building an amazing machine, that I hoped would last for 2-5 years, depending What products become availability.

Come on Newegg, I have been purchasing for years, how about a little help, from one of your tech gurus?

You know it's the right thing to do...

Sincerely requesting your help , that I will pay for! I spoke with Canada computers says they will set up the system including the 3 Samsung NVMe 970 PRO into raid, for between 75.00 to a maximum $200.00, is this really the route I have to go when I offer to purchase the balance of my equiptment?

Amazing processor !!! Love the ease to upgrade and use existing hardware.

Pros: I love the fact that AMD made this processor with the ability to just drop into existing motherboards using AMD socket for Threadripper. It took me 5 minutes to swap from 1950X and Windows booted up with no issues what so ever. The only difference is that I now have a monster 32 core of raw power. I use this chip for extreme online chess engine battles. At times I can encounter computer rigs with up to 72 cores (Intel Xeon) and that is still not enough to win all the games. Now I can level the field with more processing power from the 1950x. Also very surprise to see this chip running a lot cooler than the 1950x (68c) versus 2990wx (61c) at full power with NZXT water cooler.

Cons: Many benchmark programs give somewhat of an average high score, like Passmark Performance Test and CPU-Z. It seems the chip is too new to be properly benchmark in Windows operating system. So I cant show off the full potential of the power this chip has.
