Am I to understand that this unit will pick up wi-fi from any other wi-fi in range? and is not just your own wireless router?

Yes.  That's the point of this unit.  It picks up an external network and rebroadcasts it.

I bought it to solve two problems in hotels:
1. Sometimes you get a very weak signal.  If this unit creates it's own network that my phone/laptop would connect to, and on the other end would connect with the hotel's weak signal.
2. Sometimes hotels would let you connect only one device.  Since the REC10 creates it's own network for you to connect to and it's the only device that actually connects to the hotel's network, you can have all your devices connected at the same time.

Will this work with AT&T Uverse gateway to extend access to internet as well as Netflix and similar devices?

Yes, it will.  The range extender is simply picking up the Uverse Gateway's signal and re-broadcasting it.

does this boost reception on receiving end of wifi?

Yes - that is the idea.  It is easier to get to and receive information  from the final connection

What is the specs for the electrical adaptor? Can i plug this to 220 Volts power source?

I am almost positive that the plug for this is only 110-120 volts. It's just a basic two prong plug.

Is the external antenna the one that receives the signal to be re-broadcast?  ...or is the internal antenna the receiving antenna?

The external antenna is the broadcast antenna. The internal antenna is the recieve antenna. Thats why it is important to place the extender as close to the router as possible. To get full signal into the range extender.
