what is the definition of surge rating?

"This rating, given in joules, tells you how much energy the surge protector can absorb before it fails. A higher number indicates greater protection. Look for a protector that is at least rated at 200 to 400 joules. For better protection, look for a rating of 600 joules or more." This quote came after Googling 'surge rating' and is for surge protectors, UPS' are surge protectors with a battery back up integrated into it and does much more for protecting your systems than a surge protector alone. I highly recommend this series of UPS' and this size is good for most single computers and a few accessories.
