Question 1

i bought this but the speakers dont work...anyone have any fixes in mind? I tried the reg aux port to my comps headphone output and I tried just HDMI by itself....my comp says its sending a signal but nothings coming out of the monitor...i also tried an xbox 360 and no sound again....is it defective or am i doing something wrong?

These don't really have proper audio output. They don't have built in speakers and will only produce sound, regardless of what type of cable/system you're trying to produce it from if you have headphones plugged into the jack in the back of the monitor. It won't actually register anything else.

Considering this monitor, however never really seen this resolution, is it a noticeable difference from 1080 or just simply a little wider by a few pixels?

Until 1080p became a marketing buzzword, this resolution was the more common. It is 120 pixel taller in a landscape position (how it's shown on newegg)

The extra pixels can make a huge difference depending on how you used it. I actually find regular 1080p aspect ratio to be somewhat annoying since I've been using 1920x1200 for nearly a decade.

Really the pay off depends on what you intend to use it for. If you are like most computer users, just surfing the net, reading emails and facebooking, then no, it won't make much difference.

However, if you are using it for a task which screen real estate is at a premium, such as programming, audio/video editing, Photoshop, CAD, then it is a major boon.

If you want to watch widescreen movies on it, the extra pixels are nice so that in fullscreen mode, movie player interfaces will utilize the extra space rather than covering up part of the movie. Some Blu-ray movies are designed to allow subtitles/closed-captions to appear bellow the movie if the screen is tall enough (e.g. Taken)

what kind of cables do I need to connect to my laptop?

HDMI cable is not included. But the computer should be able to connect to the monitor in just about any way you can think of today - VGA, HDMI and DisplayPort (not DVI though since it's a bit too large for a laptop)...

I read a review that claimed this is bad for gaming.  Can anyone elaborate?

I can't speak to the issues raised by this other reviewer, but I use three of these with Nvidia Surround, and the image I get is crisp and very responsive. While it's certainly no 120Hz monitor, it is excellent in my experience for gaming, even if 120Hz would give you the edge in shooters (assuming you had the frame rate).

what adapter do I need to connect to mac book pro 13"?

This is a great pre-calibrated monitor right out of the box. I believe your Mac Book Pro has a HDMI output which will fit right in with the monitor's HDMI input. Good Luck!

Is this monitor good for video editing?  How would it display a 16:9 1920x1080 signal?

This monitor has a slightly greater vertical resolution than a 1080p video; it can display such video pixel-for-pixel, with thin black bars on the top and bottom. Color reproduction is pretty good without calibration. So yes this would be a good monitor for test-viewing processed video.

Your video editing software will zoom out the video (likely by a factor of 2 or so) while you're actually editing (cutting and splicing clips). For that, this and many other monitors of similar or higher size and resolution will be fine.

You can use to dock your laptop as a single or dual display. Connect with HDMI, DVI, VGA. Then connect printer, keyboard, mice via added USB ports. I liked the ProArt monitor so well that by the time I saved up to purchase a matching monitor the PA248Q was it's replacement. Glad I waited since this one has usb3. My preference is to spend on the best monitor I could afford then save on CPU and other components. I have found over time I hang on to the monitors longer especially when they are this good.   I normally do not reply or give reviews on New Egg but this monitor is the exception. I can say this is e the pressure of owning.... Surfce keybord is messing up! sorry

I have a 6 year old HP running Vista... Not sure the cpu offhand. was close to SOA at the time.. stock video card.. Will my computer support this monitor..?

This monitor had VGA, DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort. The limiting factor will be your video card. Thenative resolution is 1920x1200. Most GPUs could handle that. But you'll ha e to investigate into your specific hardware. Brand and age are not enough to guess by.
