The photos show that this unit has an RJ-45 LAN port but the specs do not say there is one. Is it there and is it active?

Yes, there is an active 10/100/1000/Gigabits Ethernet port (RJ-45). You can get detailed networking info from ASUS website..

WOW, I was all set and excited to buy this but then I saw most of the ports (VGA,HDMI,USB, power cord) are on the right side of the machine and that the disc drive is on the left... Ok I am right handed and this is normally the space I use to mouse. For other right handed folkes, has this been an issue or inconvenience? Thanks!

Dwayne, I purchased this for my son, who is also right handed.  I did call him for you and posed your question.  He stated that there are USBs on the left side as well.  As to the power cord, it is angled, so goes immediately backward, not in the way at all.  He does from time to time use the HDMI, and sometimes the VGA, but does not find they're position to be an issue.  We purchased this machine because of it's processor and powerful graphics card.  He is an architect major and needed something portable for when he was not near his desktop (which was built for graphic intensive rendering software).  He feels the colors are truer on this laptop.  He also wanted me to tell you that if you are a gamer, this is a beast, and he knows there are ASUS ROG formats that are more powerful, and more expensive, but this machine is a beast and runs his games extremely well (Was I scammed thinking he needed this for school? I wonder now :).  Hope this answers your question.

Is an ASUS ROG G751 Series G751JT-CH71 (Gamer) also suitable for everyday computing, web editing, word processing, browsing, etc?

Yes, it's great for everyday word processing and internet browsing.  My biggest issue is that sometimes it seems to miss a key while I'm typing.  Not sure what causes it, but it doesn't happen often enough to be a big deal.  I would advise putting a SATA3 solid state drive in to really boost load/access times, though it's adequate without one.  I usually get 2 to 3 hours of browsing/world processing time in on battery if I dim the screen, which is plenty considering this is a gaming laptop.

Does the G751JT-CH71 model play blu-rays, or just regular DVDs ?

I beg to differ...The DVD-Multi drive DOES PLAY BLU-RAYS, at least the one they shipped me does. Don't know why its not mentioned in any of the specs when they say DVD, but it's just not.

Are there any connectivity issues when using the USB 3.0 ports on the left with a high speed device like an external HDD? There are many complaints on the ROG forums that such devices connected to the left USB ports keep disconnecting.

I have yet to have any issues. Id just check the asus website for the latest drivers. This thing is a beast and i use the Bluetooth wireless Internet a gamepad that uses the usb port and other accessories. No problems. Just make sure you have all the latest drivers

how may processor cores does this thing have?
 I came to this by searching "8 core Asus gaming laptop," but here it is only specific to the type of core, and not the quantity of cores. i am looking for a computer that has 4-8 cores, and I want to know if this fits the bill. Also, does it come with a installer disc in the case I mess things up.

The true 8-core processors are on the way...I read about it shortly after committing myself to this one. But I don't even think there are products available with it yet, not notebooks anyway. But this PC gobbles up any software I have thrown at it including Architectural 3D rendering. I would still like to get the 8-core one day so I can run AI and start my own Skynet.

does it come with anti virus protection?

The problem with the McAfee preinstall is that it nags you to pay [ay pay after the 90 days. And you can buy it cheaper here than what McAfee wants to charge you directly! figure that out. Anyway, I loaded Avast (step 1) and uninstalled McAfee but must have missed something because it still comes up with messages from time to time. It's like having a broken PC from the get go (if you don't want McAfee). But I'm sure ASUS gets a kickback for loading it or a commission when you bite for the extension, they gotta make money somehow.

can I get windows 7 not 8.1?????

I believe all the new laptops come with Windows 8.1 installed. There may be a few sites that will offer it with Windows 7 installed instead, so if you wanted to purchase the Windows 8.1 version and re install with Windows 7 it should be possible, however I cannot confirm this myself as I prefer the fast boot features of Windows 8. Google for the following to get more information about the subject from the ROG forums
