Question 1

My son wants to bring this computer to school.  Can Microsoft Office be installed and if it can will it run properly?

I installed Office 365 from my sons college website for this laptop and so far no problems. I installed the web access version and the copy that downloads to the laptop so, you can access Office when offline. I also installed a copy of Visio 2013 which works ok.  I have not upgraded to the copy of windows 10 and probably won't before the end of the year when my son is finished with his first semester.

Question 2

Reviews indicate this laptop runs hot... My question is does the GL551 run hot when NOT GAMING?
When using complex Microsoft Word Office or complex charting docs?

I have had the laptop for a few months now and I watch movies and surf the internet at the same time, usually with a few tabs open in chrome and a separate monitor hooked up for the movie, and I have yet to see any overheating, In fact it has never even been uncomfortably hot on my legs while doing this.

Question 3

is it loud?

Loud? I'm not sure of what type of loud you are referring to. If you are referring to the fans being loud, no they are not. If you referring to the HDD being loud, no it is not loud either. If are referring to the sound of the speakers being loud, well it is loud enough to hear it; it is in no way a 1000 watt system loud.  So not sure about your question this would be what I think about the laptop not being loud and being able to hear sound from the speakers. Yes I do own one.

Question 4

I want to use this with a HDMI external monitor, as a desktop replacement.  Will this work?

Yes this will work, you will have to open the laptop though to turn it on since the power switch is on the top right of the keyboard. If you use it as a dual monitor and keep the laptop screen up you shouldn't have any issues. I wouldn't move the laptop around too much while plugged into the hdmi though because it isn't the strongest connector from what I have seen.

Question 5

Where is the power button located? I had a problem with a dell computer where the power button was located on the hinge of the screen.

It's a keyboard key in the upper-right corner of the keyboard. The position isn't spectacular and originally I thought maybe I'd accidentally turn it off/on but that hasn't been the case once in the the 3 months I've owned it.

Will this game be able to support mmos like FFXIV ARR?

i've had this pc for about 6 months now and i could tell you im very pleased. i play starcraft,diablo,LOL,DOTA....and other hit games on highest graphic options with no issues at all. love skyrim =] looks great! so i cant imagine you would have a issue on FFXIV

will this connect to both 5GhZ and 2.4GhZ on a dual band router? This is extremely important to me that it connect to both.

Yes this laptop connects to both 2.4GHz and 5GHz. I have a router that does both and it gives me the option to connect to both. When i connect to 5GHz everything works perfectly fine and the same for the 2.4GHz. I just checked to be absolutely sure!

Is the graphics card embedded into the motherboard or can it be replaced?

I know its uncommon but I was wondering if I could get a definitive yes or no answer. No offense. I already looked at MSI GT72 models that can, but I was wondering if can find one with a smaller screen.

Is there an SSD? I only see a 1TB HDD but on other sites it lists an SSD...

It comes with 1 tb mechanicle drive has one m.2 slot open. Order a dvd drive caddy for the 1 tb drive and get your own ssd for the drive slot as there is only one HDD spot.

Will this laptop be able to run The witcher 3 and/or Grand Theft Auto 5 (on medium settings at least? Wanting a laptop for mobility as I drive truck and can't really get a solid desktop ATM. Thanks!
