Redefining the limits

Maximus IX Apex is a motherboard built for serious performance. The ROG R&D team redefined boundaries with the Apex design -- elevating its overclocking potential to dizzying heights. Manufactured using some of the industry's highest-quality components, the Apex features a convention-breaking two-slot memory design on EATX to enable a highly optimized trace layout that reduces crosstalk and improves signal integrity. The Apex has already surpassed performance peaks by setting multiple world records to achieve global first places, breaking several long-standing records in the process. Among these record-breaking performances is the best Intel© Core CPU-frequency since the X58 platform-based motherboards, with a single-core, single-thread frequency of 7.383GHz, and 7.328MHz at four cores and eight threads. The new board has also set a reference base-clock (BCLK) record at 584MHz, and a memory frequency surpassing 5GHz in single channel — turning in a breathtaking 5041MHz! In total, Maximus IX Apex has secured eight WRs and 18 GFPs.

* All world records and global first places were verified on January 25, 2017, and are recorded at HWBOT.org.

Great Board, Ok UEFI 10/19/2019 5:47:55 AM

Pros: Everything I wanted in a motherboard, and a little I don't (*cough* LEDs). I'm sure this board will "grow with me" If I ever decide to liquid cool or aggressively overclock. I'm particularly pleased with the way the "DIMM.2" daughter board allows the M.2s to be efficiently air cooled.

Cons: Lackluster UEFI. If you aren't using Optane™ you're in for a treat. (See below).

Overall Review: My first one fried on initial power up. The replacement's S/N is 78K downstream from the defect so I'm satisfied. Now for the fun. I easily formatted a RAID 0 Boot volume with the "DIMM.2" daughter board. It was there in the UEFI waving at me saying, "Here I am, thanks for the 128 KB stripe!" But when I went to install the OS Windows couldn't detect it. Long story short, when I updated the BIOS via internet, it included the Beta Version:15.5.0.1047 of Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology Driver. On the Asus download page it even says, "If you are not using Intel® Optane™ memory, we recommend that you do not proceed with this update". After discovering this discrepancy I loaded Version 15.2.0.1020 onto a 2nd flash drive, plugged it in AFTER the Windows installer came up blank again, clicked "Load Driver" and I was home free.

One more thing. The UEFI is a little flaky. There again the board does have a lot of fruity LEDs all over it and it's marketed to gamers so I knew there had to be a glitch or two. Had to dock an egg but now that it's up and running I'm as happy as a gamer in his favorite cosplay costume at comic con. Yeah I'm that kind of happy.

P.S. Shout out to Wendy at Asus. Very professional.

Excellent board 10/8/2019 12:48:23 PM

Pros: Had it a few months with a mild overclock on a 7700K no issues. The dual M.2 DIMM thing is awesome. Lots of PCI slots.

Cons: No Wi-Fi or bluetooth... I guess?

Overall Review: If you have an older (I know) 1151 chip that you want to overclock to the extreme, I can recommend this one.

Dear Brandon S,

Thank you for the feedback and making us aware of your experience. Try taking the motherboard out of the case and set it on an insulated surface. Install JUST the CPU/cooler, and 1 stick of memory in the first slot. Plug in the 2 PSU cables to the MB. Connect the motherboard, and connect the monitor to the integrated video if it has it. Turn on the PSU. Momentarily short the 2 pins that the case's power button wires would connect to for starting. (You can also drag the case close enough to use the button's wires if you wish). If the issues persist, feel free to contact me if you have any technical or general questions. You can reach me at cl-adrian@asus.com. Your case for reference is N190955748.

Thank you for choosing ASUS!

Love the hardware. Support needs work. 5/22/2019 9:49:18 AM

Pros: - Hardware quality, components, and overall appearance is very high-end
- Compact. E-ATX form factor that's really more like ATX
- Lots of functions, more than most can use

Cons: - Support documentation is sparse for more complex functions, doesn't explain very well
- Board I received had errors upon bios update; tech support led to bios boot loop

Overall Review: My criticism of this board is not really about the hardware. Its actually a beautiful board and well-constructed. All reviews I have read praised the VRMs and the different capabilities it has. From an overclocking perspective, it has functions that far exceed what I will likely use, but I really appreciate that its overbuilt. For example, I can't imagine using LN2, but there is an LN2 mode here specifically for that. The x-shape of the board is great. Even though the board is technically EATX, I was still able to install it in a Thermaltake Core P3, which allows a max ATX size. The x-shape allowed me to run the cables more easily through the case grommets on the side of the board. Everything about this board from a hardware perspective feels very high-end. My issue is primarily with the supporting documentation and support overall in general.

After updating the bios on this board to the latest version, I started encountering issues with slow boots and errors due to the Intel ME firmware. After contacting support, I was told to reset the CMOS and downgrade the bios, if necessary. I always thought it wasn't a good idea to downgrade a bios (Asus's support pages even says that you can't do this), but I followed the directions the support technician gave me. The CMOS reset (which is handily located on the I/O area) didn't work, so I downgraded the bios - which led to a bios boot loop. I tried using some of the functions like the bios switch, or the crashfree bios recovery, but I found the instructions and supporting documents to do this pretty lacking. Needless to say, none of these functions (which I hope I was even performing correctly) worked to get me out of the boot loop, and I had to RMA the board.

So instead of a new build, I've spent money on shipping to get my board fixed, and will be waiting about 3+ weeks for the RMA process. I really like the board and appreciate what Asus has done here, considering how unique this board is. I just wish the support documentation and support process was a little better.

Impressive still to this date 5/1/2019 5:09:12 PM

Pros: -Options in bios for tweakers let you control every aspect of your cpu/memory/disk/fans
-RGB lights /Design of the apex board is top notch, A+ build quality/ heavy duty materials used
-M.2 Dimm Slot . My case has a mesh front with two 200mm fans blowing right on my dual m.2 cards so it was a selling point for me.
-Booted right away without any problems with my i7-7700k, Gigabyte 2080 oc , 32gb CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 4133,
-Accessories in the box,
-$60 Rebate in the form of a mastercard was nice of them while being on sale from Newegg

Cons: -Only 4 Sata connectors on the board
-2 slots for ram instead of the usual 4. But knew that going into it of course.
-Sonic Suite software messes with my sound on games every time I boot up my pc. I had to uninstall it..

Overall Review: If you are looking for something powerful for your 7700k or 7700 then don't hesitate and grab this board.
Been a Asus fan since my g73jh-b1 rog laptop from 10+ years ago.
