Pros: - No active cooler fans like the X570 boards! Fans are a point of failure so recommend B550 unless you are doing something crazy with PCIe gen 4 lanes - Plenty of fan headers all over the board (they are not clustered all in one place like some boards out there) - BIOS flashback is very useful if you are planning to install a Ryzen 5000 series CPU - Sound chip and ASUS software actually makes my audio better (did not buy the board for this feature but was really impressed by the sound quality) - Aura RGB works, nice ROG logo LED touch - ASUS BIOS is easy to use and plenty of support out there. There are plenty of people with ASUS boards out there and you can usually find a forum or reddit post on just about anything you want to know about this board.
Cons: - Only 6 SATA ports and limited to 4 if you use the 2nd M.2 slot (but this is common for most B550 boards). - VRM heatsinks are tall, plan accordingly if you have a tight case and trying to cram in a radiator at the top - ARGB header is in the bottom center. May be challenging to connect RGB fans from the top of the case and with ASUS put another ARGB header on the board near the top (there is a regular RGB one but not ARGB)
Overall Review: Would recommend for anyone looking for a quality B550 board. ASUS has been my go to for the last 4 builds and has never let me down. This is the first time I went for the ROG line and I am very impressed! The most under rated feature is the sound chip. I can't believe it but gaming actually sounds better with the same speakers. And I was coming from an ASUS P8Z77. Aura sync works like a charm, every other RGB product I've plug in is plug and play when it comes to LEDs (using Trident Z RGB RAM and Fractal Design AL-14 fans).
Pros: - Mine came with an updated BIOS for my 5800X. Check your little sticker by the CPU socket before trying to update BIOS for Ryzen 5000 and possibly save yourself the trouble. If the last 4 digits are over 1004, you SHOULD be good to go with Zen 3.- Shmexy look and easy to use BIOS. - PCIe Gen 4 M.2 and GPU slot.- Dark Rock Pro 4 fits. I read a review here saying that it wouldn't and I started to panic as I spent all my money on the CPU and MOBO and already had a DRP4 from a previous build. I'm using my new B550-F Gaming (Wi-Fi) with the DRP4 at the moment to type this review, and might I add, I've not gone over 69C (while gaming) and am currently at 39C. RAM clearance may be an issue for some, but the G.Skill Trident Z sticks I already had fit just fine (thankfully).
Cons: - I wish it had a USB 3.2 Type C connector on it, but for the price this isn't REALLY a con.- doesn't have a full length PCIe slot in PCIe 5, but again for the price. - After working with this board for 2 weeks, I can confirm that the NIC has some issues. I had to manually install drivers from the site. If you are doing this, you need to search for B550-F GAMING (WI-FI) specifically. The drivers for B550-F GAMING are, in fact different and it seems ASUS likes to only show what you SPECIFICALLY typed in, not a drop-down list.
Overall Review: As far as my experience goes, you really can't go wrong with an ASUS board. I've been using them for years now and have had no issues at all. The build quality is solid, the UI is intuitive and the aesthetic is on point. What's not to love?
Pros: - Instruction manual was clear and useful for a complete newbie to PC building. - BIOS already installed, including the WI-FI driver, so Internet was accessible upon OS installation.
Cons: - Drivers on a CD/DVD - should be provided on a USB key. - Newbie minor comment: Instruction manual could include a short "BIOS how to" change the boot sequence and select a USB key (I found out how to do it online instead).
Overall Review: This is the first time I am building a PC, and I selected this motherboard for the integrated wi-fi and the back up GPU (in case I messed up re-installing my old GPU). The instruction manual was simple and clear for a newcomer like me to PC building.
Pros: Well configured board, great bios with solid performance.
Cons: The NIC has significant issues right out of the box. Seems to be a well known problem with the Intel I225-v. My board has no connectivity on this NIC, but wasn’t worth the hassle of returning it for something I will barely use. I would avoid all I225-V boards if physical connection is what you desire.
Overall Review: Only outlier on an otherwise excellent product is the NIC. The built in WIFI6 is outstanding.
Pros: - Has almost everything you would want from a lower priced X570 Motherboard. - Has a few PCIe 4.0 connections for when they may be relevant in the future. - Built sturdy with decent heatsinks - Plenty of USB Ports with some USB 3.2 Gen 2 - Better than expected Realtek Sound but definitely NOT good enough compared to a dedicated sound card (which I ultimately ended up adding). - Came ready to run my 5900x, didn't need to do anything with the BIOS.
Cons: - No front panel USB-C connector. - The Software associated with the Realtek Sound. Buggy, would occasionally crash various media players. - A bit pricey compared to similar X570 boards. - One of my mounting holes on the board (middle center) was NOT drilled out and I couldn't screw it onto the case.
Overall Review: I got this as a combo deal in the NewEgg shuffle paired with an RTX 3080 TUF OC. Running with a 5900x also. Not my first choice for a motherboard, for the money probably go with an X570, however overall the motherboard is decent hardware-wise and seems to be performing about as expected. The Armoury Crate software is OK enough by itself (installs automatically unless you set it to NO in the BIOS), but you really should add the AI Suite Software as it allows you to set better fan/cooling profiles. Adding it makes Armoury Crate much better. * And then the problem lies with the Realtek Software, specifically the Sonic Suite programs that allow profiles and EQ adjustments etc. It's buggy and would sometimes crash various media players or cause them to bug out a bit. Several times it was actually running ALL 12 Cores of my 5900x 10-20% GPU Usage (as much as running CyberPunk 2077 does) until I killed the program. I tried, I really tried working with it and even reinstalling, but it was just annoying and I ended up putting in an older HT Omega sound card that, despite it's ancient looking UI, put the Realtek sound to shame.
Pros: -Works with DOCP (AMD's type of XMP) -Great I/O expansion. Can use all expansion connections without throttling -Aura RGB hardware works great with corsair equipment and corsair software suite. -Overclocking and BIOS settings appear simple and straight forward. (I haven't tried to OC) -Works well with AMD Stock Cooler, easy install, and can control the wraith RGB with a header without issue. (Still using the Corsair Software suite)
Cons: -Non as of yet, it has done everything I asked of it. I will update as issues or perks arise.
Overall Review: Old Build: -i7 - 4770k -MSI Z87 MPower -GTX 760 (Had SLI plans, but since SLI was dying I gave uip on that) -2x4gb DDR3 1600 (Had plans to get 2 more sticks) New Build: Ryzen 7 3700X ASUS ROG STRIX B-550 - F RTX 2070 Super 4x8gb Corsair RGB Vengence Pro DDR4 3200 I've seen a huge improvement over my old machine. Granted the old machine had an upgrade path that I didn't follow. If I had to advise anyone, it would be to buy the whole machine when you're building, don't save your desired parts for later.
Pros: Great chipset communication for AMD Pretty motherboard with onboard RGB for I/O face Great hardware with many options No motherboard fans
Cons: RGB software does not work well, if at all, and you cannot change RGB in BIOS Intel Foxville I225-V 2.5GbE chip for LAN connection is known to constantly malfunction, and has even conflicted with the onboard WiFi for me
Overall Review: A great motherboard hardware and looks-wise for a pretty good price. Though be ready to buy a PCIe LAN adapter if your chip malfunctions. Onboard WiFi is fine, but conflicts with the chip. If changing RGB for the I/O panel is important to you, be ready to try and decipher the confusing software (the default is a shifting between colors like super-rainbow). Gave me better performance between my AMD Ryzen 5 CPU and 5700XT GPU. Overall, a pretty decent buy. Thanks for reading!
Pros: Top the line hardware with no complaints.
Cons: Bios-level software that auto-installs when you first install windows. Armory Crate caused hangs, crashes, and hiccups while playing intensive 3D apps. Trying to uninstall it traditionally will get you nowhere.
Overall Review: This is a perfectly fine motherboard with the exception that it stores BLOATWARE onboard and installs it at the bios-level. Only through the bios can you turn it off. Unacceptable, Asus. Stuff your stupid launcher.
