Pros: I build computers for a hobby - I really like PC hardware. I am a little addicted. My last one was an MSI X570 with a R5 5600X. I went for early adoption on Z690 as I worried things would just not be available like with Nvidia RTX 30 series cards for example. It was painful in terms of just getting the hardware due to ordering and shipping issues, I work hard at getting the best deal of course but even that didn't work out. This board is a very well built motherboard, just solid and everything works perfectly. I put an I7 12700KF on it with Noctua NH-DH15 cooler, 32 Gb of G.Skill Trident Z DDR4 3600 16-16-16-36 ram with Samsung 980 Pro 500GB and a bunch of other M.2 drives - it has room for 4 of them. Video card is a Gigabyte RTX 2080 (I can't manage to buy a 30 series where I live). My only install issue is the extra Noctua fan has to sit up on top of the ram as it is a bit tall. I am currently using the LGA 1200 mounting holes as I still need to get the LGA 1700 bracket, but no problems as the idle temp is 21-23 degrees. No issues going to XMP1. This board has a nice bios. Running Windows 11 Pro on Dev Channel. This is currently the best priced and totally solid Z690 WIFI DDR4 motherboard you will be able to find. Asus has a winner on this one.
Cons: No cons on the motherboard or the processor. Delivery was terrible on both processor and motherboard I feel lucky I got it at all.
Overall Review: This board is a steal compared to the other high priced Z690 boards at $350 and you don't have to somehow find DDR5 ram. If you have an LGA 1200 cooler you can reuse it too. I am happy with this selection. It is very fast by the way.
Pros: Running Windows 11, i7-12700k, 32GB DDR4 RAM @ 3200MHz stable aside from network controller
Cons: This motherboard uses an Intel I225-V Networking Controller which has caused network outages, blue screens, and inability to shut down my desktop cleanly. It installed with firmware 1.0.2.4(had issues). Windows 11updated it to 1.0.2.6(had issues). Support website updated them to 1.0.2.14(same issues). I had to buy a $15 PCI Gigabit networking card and disable the onboard ethernet in the BIOS rather than either RMA or replace since it would waste a lot of time.
Overall Review: It works, hopefully the networking controller will be fixed via driver/firmware update but after research it seems it was doing this on older 11th/10th motherboards as well. Not sure why ASUS keeps using it
Pros: - Looks just as cool as ROG variant - Uses DDR4. Cheaper and easier to find. With a good pair of RAM it runs just as good a DDR5. - BIOS feature is the same as my old ASUS Maximus X Hero
Cons: - Less LED than ROG variant. But hey.. I paid what I get. Not a real con here. - DDR4. Double-edged sword. It isn't future proof as DDR5 is becoming the new standard.
Overall Review: Good ASUS quality as always. A good LGA 1700 board DDR4 alternative. BIOS offers advanced features as much as ROG variant.
Pros: - Seems to work eventually
Cons: - Didn't work with ethernet right out of the box like other vendors. Had to manually move drivers by USB. See all the complaints on reddit for more info. - RGB features won't work without installing Armory Create software which is a huge pile of junky bloatware software. Asus is combining all its software so you have to install all the junk together. - RGB lighting on this version of the board is weak and covered up by GPU. They shouldn't have wasted money on it.
Overall Review: Wouldn't look to other products on the market. This was an very inferior experience in comparison to other boards i've built with recently.
Pros: - Convenient layout. - Subtle, non-overwhelming RGB. - WiFi antenna worked well.
Cons: - Price is a bit high for what you get. - USB dropouts causing problems with computer mouse and audio. This initially manifested as my wireless mouse getting entirely disconnected and needing to power cycle it to reconnect. Upon switching to another, wired mouse, I ran into my USB microphone audio being weirdly quiet (vs testing the same mic on another PC). Used latencymon to verify. - HD audio header seemed to be DoA? No sound from front port despite connecting cable to case.
Overall Review: Wouldn't recommend it, due to the USB dropout issues.
Pros: Easy straightforward board. Paired with an Intel I7-12700K, Noctua NH-D15S Chromax, 32GB of Viper Steel XMP2.0 DDR3600, and a repurposed Samsung 970 EVO, EVGA GTX 980TI, Crucial SSD, and an 850 Corsair PS. All went together well no issues. Asus's Amoury Crate is an easy way to insure all of the chipset and other drivers are up to date. Running Windows 11 Pro clean install.
Cons: Not really a con, but in my ancient Antec 880 Pro tower case it was a long reach for the SATA 3 & 4 connectors from my optical drives.
Overall Review: No complaints, works as it should, can't ask for more.
Pros: Motherboard robust, little flexing. Came complete with all the necessary hardware. Familiar BIOS. (Previous ASUS MB owner).
Cons: The provided software/driver disc is outdated, Drivers did not install properly, had to download updated ones.
Overall Review: I'm an ASUS fan for the last 3 builds. (Previously Gigabyte, no issues, just felt the move to ASUS was more bang for the buck) This board met all my requirements, priced reasonably, especially these days. Curse you COVID! No performance problems to date, everything running fast and smooth.
Pros: - VRMs are beefy and the heatsink is unobtrusive, unlike some other Asus boards with plastic covers on the VRM heatsinks. - Two PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots well away from the CPU and PCIe 5.0 card slots (getting better temps for NVMe SSDs than a previous board), and all of the M.2 slots have Q-Latch, no dealing with tiny screws! - Not heavy with the onboard RGB, and it can be disabled in BIOS - Built-in I/O shield - Easy to navigate BIOS even in advanced mode. One-click XMP, and one-click automatic fan curve setup for entire system.
Cons: - A little light on the fan headers - Never been a fan of Realtek onboard audio, but I guess it works okay - As with seemingly all Asus boards, the default BIOS options are enabled to try to push MyASUS and Armoury Crate. This should be disabled. - Lacking the new PCIe card slot release button from the upper-tier ROG boards - BIOS setting profiles can only be saved/restored between versions with USB flash drives, even though the board can read BIOS update files from installed HDDs/SSDs. Why not allow profiles to be saved to those drives as well?
Overall Review: Great budget Z690 DDR4 board, all the power needed for 12th gen Intel without having to sacrifice any major functionality.
