Pros: -Great performance (while it worked)
Cons: -Only lasted about a year and a half before breaking down
Overall Review:
This was my first gaming laptop and I was pretty excited to finally have a 'legit' computer to play games on. It worked just as I'd hoped with no glitches or issues for about a year and a half. Then out of the blue I went to turn it on (I'd shut it down for windows updates), and it went straight to bios and would not come out. I called Asus and they suggested I restart it; that was basically all the troubleshooting help I was given. Google was more helpful than that. I was told my only option was to mail in the laptop for repairs, on my dime. After 2 separate calls hoping to get someone a little more helpful I took their phone survey that I was directed to and left less than stellar review ratings. A few days after that I received a call from an actual technician who helped me troubleshoot the laptop a bit, but unfortunately the call dropped and I wasn't able to call that number back. I ended up taking the laptop to best buy where they ran a diagnostic on it and said it appeared the motherboard had gone bad. So now I'm writing this review on my $400 9 year old desktop because my expensive (well to me) gaming laptop is completely useless and would probably cost more to repair than replace.
Just very disappointing. This wasn't the first product I bought from Asus, but I won't be buying from them again.
Pros: Reasonable specs at the pricepoint.
Cons:
-Exceedingly ugly, "Republic of Gamers" is embossed on it, looks extremely unprofessional for an adult to use.
-Poor build quality, the case came apart.
Overall Review: Got this PC a long while ago and it failed rather quickly, forgot about it completely but just saw it as I went through Newegg order history. I had gotten an ASUS laptop in the past and it was a good, unpretentious company that sold a reasonable product at a reasonable price in an unassuming case. While I still trust ASUS for components, it seems that they are trying to sell this Republic of Gamers line as a way of building up their brand... but it isn't good. It is visually ugly and the build quality of the plastic is lower and the computer fell apart under the weight of the components, which the prior laptop didn't. Meanwhile I put stickers on the laptop to distract from/cover the ROG logo because I am an adult and had to take the laptop in public. Will stick with companies like Lenovo or somesuch for future laptops.
Pros:
I bought this in the summer of 2015 for both school and gaming. It's been great. It physically looks incredible and performs amazing. When I upgraded to Windows 10 I had some driver problems, but ASUS customer support helped get me the right drivers and I haven't had any problems since. The graphics card is amazing, plays games at or greater than the PS4's graphics. Battlefield 4 on high at >60fps, Witcher 3 on medium-high at 30-40fps.
Memory is plentiful and the harddrive is spacious, wish there was an SSD. There is apparently an SSD slot, but you have to take apart the entire computer to get to it.
When I bought it, it came with a free gaming mouse, which is apparently a $70 retail value. Incredible mouse. I love its fit and feel.
Cons:
Keyboard feels fairly loud and the touchpad is really loud when you click it.
Battery is shot. It doesn't properly display the battery life anymore and left unplugged can die any minute. Pretty sure it was my fault though since my friend tripped on my power cord and yanked the computer onto the floor. Amazingly other than a dent in the lid, it still works fine.
Disc tray is really flimsy. I'm careful with it and always use two hands, I feel like it could snap if I put a disc in without supporting it.
Laptop is quite warm when the GPU's limits are pushed. I have a cooling fan though and with it, it runs cool.
The Lid is incredibly prone to fingerprints. I considered it a sin to touch it when it was new but don't really care anymore.
Overall Review:
Definitely the best laptop I've ever owned. I heartily recommend it. It's stylish and powerful, what more could you want?
Would rate it 4 1/2 if I could.
Pros:
- Performs well
- Decently priced for the hardware
- Great deal on sale
Cons:
- Doesn't hold a charge for long (should be expected of a laptop with a dedicated GPU)
- Lacks ventilation
- Windows 8.1
Overall Review:
I ordered this back in June 2015, as it was on sale and made for a pretty good deal for a gaming laptop for my S.O. Around July 2016, the charging port came a touch loose, but it was still under warranty. We sent it in, which took us 35 days to get it back, horrific repair time for a lack of holidays. The laptop continued to function without issue until around Christmas when the charging port was loose again.
I opened the computer up to find that half of the internal screws are missing, and one screw was lazily left sitting on the HDD. When I finally got to the charging port, I found that the charging port had been "repaired" with a thin strip of tape, and the charging port had become loose again because the tape would no longer stick due to dust. ASUS claims that this is not their fault, and is insistent that they don't believe me.
If this computer was not manufactured by crooks, I would recommend it.
Pros: This laptop can handle just about any game you throw at it. We bought this for our teen daughter and it's been performing great for almost a year now. We bought a 2 year accident warranty but haven't used it yet. Our daughter spilt a coke on it but ASUS covers damage from spills and what not for 1 year. No questions asked and prompt service. We would definitely consider purchasing from ASUS again.
Cons: Backlighting is only in red. No multicolor.
Overall Review: Highly recommend.
Pros: nice keyboard
Cons:
video card is bust
games and videos, or ever browser use, make the machine crash
Overall Review:
For the first week or so it was great, no problems, but then gpu crashes abounded.
The one I get the most:
"Windows 8(r) driver has crashed and has recovered (even though I'm on Windows 10)."
The laptop has a sticker that says "Plays well with Windows 10" - what a joke, I can't even play. I updated my drivers numerous times but that error keeps occurring. When it happens, if I'm in a game, the game will crash. Sometimes I get it just when I'm watching a video or browsing the web. The whole browser will turn white and I will have to drag it for the page to re-render.
At first I thought it was just Windows 10, but I think it's a video card issue. I paid less $$ for my custom built PC and that one works flawlessly.
So.. watch out.. it might have bad hardware..
Pros: First of all I love this laptop, for the price it is a very solid gaming machine.
Cons: It really does pick up fingerprints very easily, but it is manageable with a soft cloth if you stay on top of it you can keep it clean without the oils staining the case.
Overall Review: This review is mostly to point something out to others who might run into this issue with this laptop. When updating the Nvidia drivers to the most current the external display ports ceased to function, HDMI and Mini Display port both. I tried many things, and several monitors, which all work on other devices, to no avail. I contacted Asus support, and while helpful to walk me through checking a couple of things that I hadn't checked yet they ultimately wanted me to send in the laptop. I decided to try something else, I removed the driver...again, but this time I let Windows 10 just find me the driver and it brought in one from July 2015. At this point everything is back to working. I don't recall exactly which Nvidia driver made this stop working, I do remember it was in the September / October time frame. I have a friend with the Asus ROG that came with 256GB SSD and 860M graphics had the same issue at the same time, and he also tried a bunch of stuff and fixed it the same way I did. I just wanted people to be aware in case they happen to have the issue and see this post. :)

Pros: - CPU is a power house
- Red backlit keyboard helps in dark spaces, and the chiclet-mechanical keys provide good tactile feedback, awsd is even highlighted
- HDMI output is an excellent addition to the box, lets me use it as an alternative to consoles.
Cons: - This machine cost me over $1,000.00 and only had a 1 year warranty.
- The finish on the case displays finger prints prominently, which is a bit annoying.
- The ROG logo that lights up like the apple on a mac is not attractive and makes the thing feel more like a toy than a gaming rig.
- Planned obsolescence in the form of a faulty power-source seems obvious, looking over some of the other reviews.
Overall Review: This machine has served me well for the past three years. Is it an end-all be-all gaming rig? No. It's got a formidable graphics card for a mobile platform, but it is not the greatest thing ever built, and has some trouble with modern games. The box says GTX960m...but there's no mention of the fact that a mobile card is nerfed compared to its desktop counter-part. This machine's card is equivalent to a GTX560 on desktop. I realized this fact in the form of a rude awakening when I tried to play DOOM(2016) on it to no avail. But, for what it is, it's a good machine, even if that 960 sticker is lying to me.
Just the other day, I pulled the power cable out of the laptop, and moved it closer to my router to increase download rate on a game I was trying to install. That worked fine, plugged it back in, played the game for a while - no surprises, no trouble. However, later that evening the laptop started oscillating between it's "plugged-in" power profile and it's "on-battery" power profile, rapidly, every 2 seconds it would switch, and I'd get an update from the ROG software telling me it's plugged in, its on batter, its plugged in, its on battery, and the display brightness was switching with it. Within about an hour of this starting, the laptop shut down. There are four lights on the front of the case which indicate power, charging, caps-lock, etc. Now when i plug it in, the charging light lights up for a few seconds, then turns off. If I boot the machine, I can log-in to windows, but it will only last about 2 minutes or so before abruptly shutting off. It's the battery, right? Surely after three years any battery is going to have problems holding a charge. So, i take the battery out, plug it in, and...nothing. No power at all. Ok...so I reached out to ASUS support. I got some guy on chat, and after 30-45 minutes of explaining the situation, he reminds me of the audacious "warranty" policy and that it's expired, then quotes me a $650.00 fee for assessing the problem...not repairing it, mind you, assessing it. The laptop, at this point, isn't worth $650....and I'm beginning to wonder whether or not my loyalty to this brand is worth anything at all either. Mind you, I have a Lenovo that I bought in 2012 for $500.00 (less than the assessment fee)...works just fine today. So, it's possible to create a decent laptop. I don't think this is an example of that. You're money is better spent on a well established brand (not ROG) that has a reputation for longevity and support.
