The Fractal Design Define S lends the appearance, sound dampening technology, and support for a wide variety of components from the widely popular Define Series, while introducing a new, innovative internal layout. The Define S case is packed with intelligently designed enthusiast-oriented features delivering a silent case with powerful and expansive air and liquid cooling support, presented in a stunning Scandinavian inspired construction.
The modernized internal layout of the Define S omits the optical drive bays, instead focusing on a clear straight airflow path and uncompromising water cooling support.
The Define S case reaches the highest level of silent computing through strategically placed dense sound-absorbing material, multiple ModuVent™ fan vent covers and finely tuned Dynamic Series fans.
Pros: Very space efficient. Without the 5.25" bays the whole front of the case is open, seriously improving airflow over other designs. The included fans are definitely a plus, they're very quiet. I love having the drives mounted on the back of the motherboard tray, it keeps the inside of the case much tidier. The velcro straps for reusable cable management are a great touch, and I like that pretty much every thumb screw in the case is a captive screw so you don't lose them.
Cons: With my motherboard the SATA ports aligned up with the 3.5" bays on the back of the case, making it very difficult to get a cable between the two and still get the back door on. A little more cable management space would be great.
Overall Review: I replaced my old Antec Sonata III with this. It's been a long time since I've looked at buying a case (almost a decade) so I agonized over reviews and youtube videos trying to find one that works. I got this and a NZXT X61 water cooler, and the two together are a great pair. I mounted the X61 to the front in a pull configuration into the case, then mounted the included fan as an exhaust in one of the moduvents on top. My CPU runs much cooler thanks to the new water cooler, but my big surprise is that my GPU temps have dropped by about 10-15°C. The open space up front really helps get that cool air back to the graphics card. The fan filters are so far doing great at keeping the case clean (a huge upgrade from the Sonata III). Definitely happy with the purchase.
