Love the HDHOMERUN product line, the Connect Duo is great 5/29/2020 1:47:43 PM

Pros: The Connect Duo has excellent sensitivity for picking up OTA channels that are 50+ miles away. Of course, a good antenna is needed for that too, but the TV's I hooked up the antenna to could not resolve as many digital channels as the Duo could. I have owned 2 HDHOMERUN Prime units for a number of years with never a problem. I am using this unit with PLEX and love the integration between the Duo and Plex.

Overall Review: I would highly recommend any of the Silicon Dust tuners. The Duo is an excellent product.

Zero complaints 12/24/2019 8:23:51 AM

Pros: - lots of tuners
- solid construction
- silicon dust reliability and simplicity

Cons: None

Only thing tha comes to mind that would be nice if it had a built in booster ?

Overall Review: I owned a previous model and it was working fine.

I wanted to simplify my home setup with their dev service instead of mythtv/schedules direct.

I asked support and they promptly told me I needed the newer model because of hardware limitations of the old school tuner.

No regrets, the setup is absurdly simple, was up and running in no time, even the kodi adding just worked without much hassle. On top of it, the dvr storage goes on my synology, so I can effectively decommission an entire system.

If you’re reading this and are done tinkering with mythtv, buy this, get their dvr key, set it up and get with the times

Good job silicon dust

Fantastic tuner box. Ya can't beat an HDHomeRun device! 12/12/2019 12:56:45 PM

Pros: * Easy installation.
* Compact size.
* Good-to-excellent reception.
* Low power consumption.
* Uses wired Ethernet, doesn't need any of your P'Cs or other devices' ports.
* Doesn't require a ton of network capacity.

Cons: * Actual TV shows aren't written any better just because you have a better tuner!
* Doesn't wash the dishes for you after a big meal.

Overall Review: I've had a 2-tuner HDHR Connect for years, and it's functioned admirably. But every now and then, I needed an extra tuner or two. That old box was good, but so far, this 4-port one looks even better. I live in a marginal signal area near a big city (appx. 40-45 miles from the broadcast towers) and based on two weeks of monitoring signal quality, I appear to have even stronger reception on the HDHR5-4US, than I get from my older 2-tuner HDHomeRun Connect.

SiliconDust seems to have put the past few years to good use, making their tuners ever better. Reception from this box is very good. And, the chassis underneath is metal (not plastic) in this device, and that may afford some additional signal shielding from nearby RF sources.

Up to now, I was using my old HDHR Connect (2 tuners) plus a single-tuner, USB-port-hogging KWorld TV stick. But now, with the HDHR5-4US, I pulled that KWorld stick off the server, and have only the two HDHRs on my network. This means: Not only did I go from a total of three OTA tuners, to SIX, and was also able to free up a valuable USB port. Having these tuners on your network (and not physically plugged into any PCs/servers) is absolutely the way to go. One might think they'd badly affect bandwidth, but so far I see no sign of that, even when recording 6 show simultaneously (half of which were shows in 1080p).

The device has a RJ-45 wired 100Mbps connection, and a wall wart for power. Add on a decent quality RF-cabled antenna, and you're good to go. For watching live, over-the-air television on a TV or Android device, the only software you need is the HDHR App, which you can get from the appropriate store (Windows Store, Android Store, or SiliconDust's own website). And you have other options out there for software as well. Naturally, for full DVR functionality like timeshifting live TV and recording programs, you will need some additional software, like Kodi, Plex, or SiliconDust's own subscription-based DVR service.

A word about Kodi/MediaPortal2 using this tuner on Windows:
I had only a little difficulty integrating the four new tuners into my main OTA television setup, which uses Kodi on Windows 7 as its front-end, and MediaPortal2 as the back-end (both on the same laptop). Most of it was my own ignorance of MediaPortal2's workings, but with the help of the numerous videos, tutorials, and blogs out there, I was able to easily enough use MP2's TV-Server setup program and noodle it out. Google is your friend in this chore.

In short - this is a great tuner box! Pretty hard to go wrong with stuff from SiliconDust, and the HDHR5-4US is no exception.

SiliconDust Boxes Are Built to Last 11/27/2019 9:25:16 AM

Pros: We have the older SiliconDust HD Homerun Prime which is the box for cable TV reception instead of over-the-air. It's been connected to our home wi-fi router and running continuously for about 8 years with no problems. (Our HTPC is also connected to the router, of course, and that lets us watch and record TV shows.) The point is that it has been a totally reliable piece of equipment. I think there was one software update about 5 years ago and that's all.

Cons: Comcast/Xfinity cable TV service shutdown for several hours during construction work a couple of times over the years, and we needed to unplug the SiliconDust box, wait a few seconds then plug it back in. This "reset" the box and it connected to Comcast again right away.

Overall Review: Good design and made to last, at least the older HDHomerun Prime is. So, maybe this SiliconDust "Extend" box is worth a try.

Works Great 8/5/2019 3:42:47 PM

Pros: Plug and Play with Plex
4 Simultaneous Streams

Cons: Ethernet is only 100M

Overall Review: I use this tuner with my Plex Media Server to replace cable and I have not been disappointed. I paired the HomeRun Connect Quatro with a passive antenna in my attic and it was able to pick up all the major channels in my area of Arizona. The HomeRun Connect Quatro ethernet port and the Plex Media server are both wired to the same gigabit switch. Even with the HomeRun Connect Quatro only connecting at 100M, I have experienced no lag or skipping when watching live TV or recorded playback from Plex.

Did you find this review helpful?
Manufacturer Response:
While wanting the fastest possible connection always makes sense, in this case, it's honestly just not necessary. The HDHomeRun QUATRO can only output 4 streams, and the maximum possible bitrate for each of those streams is only about 15 Mb/s, which combined is still 40Mb/s less than a 100Mb line can carry. With a QUATRO it's simply not possible to max out your ethernet port. That likely explains why you've experienced zero skip or lag: plenty of guaranteed bandwidth!

Better easier OTA TV service if you already have streaming boxes. 6/3/2019 8:59:07 AM

Pros: Box does exactly what it claims and if you want to pay the subscription you can even get additional channels or dvr functionality.
No longer must a TV be tethered to the wall with a Coax cable input; or can use laptop or tablet as well.

My old setup included OTA antenna, preamp, and an amplified splitter running to 3 TVs (and yes I had caps on the unused outputs). In spite of this the signal would still be poor at times with choppy video and/or audio.
New setup is with the same OTA antenna and preamp and then goes straight to this box. General picture/signal quality is noticeably better and no issues with choppy-ness. The box even saw a couple more channels then my TVs tuner did.

An added bonus for me is that I rarely ever need to change inputs now that I am watching OTA TV on my streaming box.

Cons: I have PCs/raspberry pi's running LibreElec/Kodi at all TVs so that was the easiest way for me to incorporate it.
The official app ONLY supports the default Kodi skin (or forks of it). If you want to use a different skin (I use Aeon Nox) then you will have to manually install the unofficial version of the app.

Occasionally the feed stops for a few seconds to buffer (FYI everything is hardwired, no wifi).
Not sure if issue is with the Duo tuner or the fact that I am using an unofficial app.

The other day I noticed that my bedroom TV could see/access the Duo's feeds natively from its built in software, so for kicks I tried it and the feed was uncharitably terrible with horribly off sync audio. However bedroom is a cheap LG with webOS and on wifi.

2 out of 2 people found this review helpful. Did you?
Manufacturer Response:
With Kodi it's sometimes hard to say what might cause a buffer moment. The player requires extreme precision and a buffer, which is why it can sometimes take a tiny bit longer to start a channel than the official HDHomeRun app. With that said, it's an awesomely powerful software, and as you've pointed out, super configurable. Interesting report on the LG. A guess is that its wifi is just really bad, but it would definitely be interesting to look into that further. Thanks for the review!
