The Thermaltake VL52021N2U mini-ITX case is a great choice for space-limited condition, such as HTPC. This small form factor case offers a compact, stylish and convenient solution for housing a mini-ITX system, and this compact case has many of the features you'd expect from a larger box, all orderly arranged to do the job neatly and efficiently. The innovative cooling system utilizes the fanless design to save energy and keep the environment quiet. Great little mini-ITX case 8/10/2013 4:51:41 PM

Pros: - Small
- Solid construction.
- Easy assembly.
- Just the right size PSU for the type of computer this should contain.
- Customers love them because they look good and are quiet.
- Thus far the PSUs have been completely solid.

Cons: - Pricier than identical cases with higher-wattage PSUs and nicer-looking front bezels (though these are more durable).
- Heavy for what it is.
- Cramped if you need more than a couple SSDs. Retrospectively, I wouldn't use it again for a similar small office server build that I did with an i5 and mirrored 3.5" storage drives.

Overall Review: I built a bunch of computers with i3-2120T processors and SSDs about a year and a half ago and they're still running strong with no complaints from the users. For those, this case was an excellent choice.

However, with much more than such low-mid range hardware, they get hotter than I like to see due to very low airflow. This is why I wouldn't do something along the lines of the i5-2450S with 3.5" drives (their file server) in one again. That machine idles around 15-20F above ambient, which would concern me on a machine that did much heavier duty than this one does (it runs a couple VMs, file serving, and services for applications they need). Still, this is the only one that has been even marginally flaky out of all their machines, and I suspect that's either due to heat or spinning those two big 3.5" drives with this little PSU.

I wouldn't even contemplate building a machine with a video card in this case, it's simply not going to dissipate that kind of heat.

Regardless, it's a solid case for a mini-ITX build and perfect for use on a desk in an office.

I'd strongly consider other mini-ITX cases before buying it again, simply due to the price.

A VERY CUTE BOX for HTPC and NAS 5/13/2013 1:48:00 PM

Pros: Choosing this computer case to assembly HTPC and NAS server for home use. When I receive it, find out it just the same size as a shoe box. Putting in Mini-ITX motherboard such as ASRock E350M1/USB3 is not hard. 4 screws, Done.
200W PSU is enough for motherboard + 2x 3TB Hard drive(RAID 1) + one SSD (booting OS)

Cons: None

Overall Review: To use Nvida 640GT video card, I need to consider 450W PSU such as SILVERSTONE ST45SF-G 450W SFX12V, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817256084.

Nice "fanless" case that has a fan? 3/15/2013 4:16:12 PM

Pros: small, inexpensive.

Cons: Not "fanless"

Overall Review: I was all excited when I ran across this "fanless" case because I intend to make a totally-fanless HTPC, then the video points out that this "fanless" case has a fan in the power supply. Silly and misleading.

Pros: Well built, works very well for a HTPC. The cables are long enough to reach everything and tuck out of the way. Using a AMD A4-3400 and the provided fan fits, with maybe 1/8" clearance.

At first I tried to mount HDD below Blu ray disk and it was too cramped looked in the manual and found the side mount option which worked very well.

It was very easy to work with once I removed the power supply ( 5 screws).

If you are looking for a HTPC case this one works very well.

Cons: I would have liked a built in case fan but that may be a warm and fuzzy thing for me. It has had no overheating problems so it may not be needed.

Room for improvement 2/2/2013 2:20:15 PM

Pros: Room for full-sized expansion bracket. Enough room for good airflow. Can expose a 3.5" slot, HDD is mounted on the side of the case (see manual). Full size ROM drive, so the slim DVD/blu-ray drives aren't necessary. Comes with 220W ThermalTake PSU (SL-B220SFX).

Cons: PSU cabling is longer than necessary. Having a mounted PSU with cables that reach to the outside of the case is too long. 1/2ing the cables would still fit. Not typical ATX PSU, but not proprietary design either. Find the right SFX PSU.

Overall Review: From the user manual: CPU cooler height limitation not to exceed 45mm (1.77in) height; VGA length limitation not to exceed 290mm (11.42in) length.

I think ThermalTake cases are excellent, this PSU cable length is crazy long though.

clean but cramped, can over heat 1/19/2013 4:45:49 PM

Pros: Small. Can be mounted flat or on edge.
Good looks. Standard ITX PSU can be ugraded if needed. front USB ports are covered up with a door. Clean case.
Case Works fine if you use passive (fanless) cooled CPU's.

Cons: Very tight inside. Poor Air flow (has tones of holes). PC over heated a lot granted I was pushing it very hard (civilization 4). One hard drive can mount on the side so this will cover your right side vent holes.
The video card if you mount one in there will cover the left vent holes. Almost impossible to find a CPU heat sink that is less than 42MM high. That is all the room you will have to mount a CPU cooler. 42MM from CPU surface to PSU base. Back of PSU and back of front hard drive will almost touch.
Use either laptop hd drives or SSD's to keep air flow open.

Overall Review: I have two of these cases. The side case vent holes are the exact spacing to mount a 80mm fan to the inside. DO IT. The case is only good for passive cooled fanless motherboards. My passive cooled Mobo works fine. No issues I'm using it for a home theatre PC. Works fine but if you stuff it full it will over heat. I tried to build a portable small game PC. Case is in dire need of a front case fan or some other active air flow option. I drilled a blow hole in my second case and mounted a 80mm case fan on the top outside. Looks steempunk now. It works but I had to do a lot of changes to get it to keep cool for my civilization 4 PC.

Nice Case 1/19/2013 5:19:52 AM

Pros: Well built and takes up very little space on your desk.

Cons: They didn't figure for cooling though I got two 80mm fans in. The case is also cramped but what would you expect from such a small case.

Potential Powerhouse 1/2/2013 11:59:44 PM

Pros: you'd be surprised to know how much you can fit into this case. i upgraded from another smaller, cheaper, itx case and was blown away by how much stuff i could fit in it. the stock psu is fine to run about anything you could want to fit in the case. great venting.

PSU: Thermaltake 220SFX
CPU: Intell core 2 duo E6550 2.33ghz oc'ed 2.52ghz
Mobo: ZOTAC GeForce 9300-ITX
HDD: 2x 320GB WD Caviar Se
GPU: Asus HD 6670 1GB GDDR5

Cons: Airflow, but thats the form factors con, not the case's.

Overall Review: overall, its a good case. its stylish, fits into a home theater setup or maybe even a lanbox. quality build, expected from thermaltake
