Bought in April 2018 after Tax day.

Pros: WD name & rep. USB 3.0 and worked well when it worked. Had a BLUE drive in it which is OK for backup.

Cons: Failed after 8 months and RMA to WD in Feb. 2019 after I realized that WD warranty lasts 2 years. Good!!!! Let's see how their warranty process works. Expected more from WD as all data was lost. My other WD drives have performed admirably and that's why I bought this one. Time will tell!

Other Thoughts: Looking to go with a 4 bay USB 3.0 setup and don't know if I should buy BLUE or RED.

If the test is unfortunately inconclusive and you just purchased the drive then you should be able to return it to the place of purchase. However, if you are past their return policy, you can create an RMA through WD and replace the drive under warranty if necessary.

We’re sorry to hear your experience with WD Elements Portable drive which is not working on macOS and appreciates your time providing this review.Please know the WD Elements Portable drive ships with an NTFS file system for Windows PC's; macOS computers can mount NTFS formatted drives, but it will be Read Only. It's best your WD Elements drive to be re-formatted in HFS+J file to be compatible with Time Machine or exfat to be read/write ready on both Windows and macOS. We placed a useful link below to an article explaining how to reformat the drive for macOS and macOS High Sierra.

Follow the steps below:

1.) Opening Disk Utility, Click on "View" Tab (on the top left corner) and Select "Show All Devices".
2.) Under External select "WD (Drive Name) ending with Media" and Click on "Erase".

One out of two ok

Pros: Ordered two WD Elements 6tb drives in August 2018. By November one of the two drives started buzzing and clicking. Then could no longer access drive. Lost 4tb of data that could not be recovered. Had to RMA drive. Not happy with my purchase.

Cons: Drive failed after 3 months of use.

Pros: -decent transfer speeds

Cons: -you can hear the drive spin up but its silent after a couple seconds

Don't waste your money!!!

Pros: None

Cons: Have purchased three, two were dead on arrival and had to be returned, one dead after 6 months of use when full. Will not be buying another one.

Plenty of Free 3rd-Party Backup Software Available

Pros: Paragon and EaseUS offer free versions of their very good backup software. Just download and install either one on your PC or laptop. They have an easy step-by-step procedure ("wizard") for scheduling backup of your data onto this drive.

Or, you can pay more and get WD's My Book which is a very similar external drive that includes WD's own backup software.

Another use would be to connect this to a USB port on your home router or gateway. That would give you data storage that's accessible from any computer in your home.

Cons: Comes with 2-year warranty. Should be longer!

Other Thoughts: Be sure to connect this directly to your computer or router. Do NOT connect it to a USB hub which has several ports. For some reason it's more likely to fail that way.

6tb for 106 bucks, sold!

Pros: I have about 6 of these drives now, I just bought 3 more. With the promo code, 18TB for roughly 300 bucks, ok.

Cons: I find that the USB controllers in these externals fail far before the drive will (which I have had in two). Just pull drive out and use in tower. These externals use WD Blues.

Other Thoughts: I'd buy these again when they are on sale. When you need cheap redundant backups, it's the way to go.
