It may have changed my mind about modular4/8/2014 1:21:24 PM
Pros: -Perfect history with Corsair Power Supplies
-Quality build, heft & accessories
-Modular cables seem to be the happy balance between too flimsy & too bulky
Cons: None found with this one
Overall Review: "I love the smell of new PSUs in the morning." OK, anytime really ;) Seriously, buying a Corsair power supply is never a question in and of itself, but I really debated about modular. My experience with modular has been less than stellar. I have purchased a few in the past, in all cases a known brand that reviewed well. And, in all cases, I had initial or eventual issues with the SATA cables. With two of them, the issue was that one of the SATA connectors on the strand was bad and couldn't be used. Not too hard to work-around, but disappointing since modular power supplies are usually touted as a premium option. The last issue I had with one was that the whole SATA cable (more likely the internal feed) was intermittently failing. It took a fair amount of troubleshooting to determine that it wasn't the hard drive, so you can see why I am apprehensive. Enter the HX650. I do a fair amount of Video Editing and have two main i5 rigs plus another Phenom II X4 that I keep running a fair amount. One i5 has an HX850 (awesome, but a bit overkill for air cooling) the other i5 has an HX750 (maybe a bit more than is needed, but quiet & efficient). This HX650 went into the Phenom II X4 rig that has 4 SATA optical + 4 SATA HDDs, plus some add-on power needs, and it is perfect for that setup. I have been running it hard for several weeks and have had no SATA problems. So, I guess my future rule will be modular only if it is a Corsair. 5 eggs for Corsair goodness and changing my thinking about modular.
Pros: Solid/Sturdy/Heavy
Packaging is sweet!
More connectors than you know what to do with.
Great Power.
CWT PSU.
7, s-e-v-e-n year warranty!
This thing emits a light hum that is barely audible over the 'trickle' of water sound from my loop. My side panel for my case is always off and my PC is mounted on the wall about 2 feet from my head and it's STILL that quiet.
Powering water-cooled OC'd 140w 945 BE, OC'd WC 4890, 8GB DDR3, Swiftech MCP655 through (2) 240mm rads, 2 cougar PWM fans and 2 Apollish white LED fans, ODD, 2 HDD, 1 SSD, and a UV LED strip.
Never a hiccup, BSOD, reboot, nothing...even during 8 hour game sessions.
Cons: Nay
Overall Review: I had issues with 750W 80Plus Bronze Ultra X4 PSU...intermittent reboots, BSODs, and the fan in that thing was always going full blast...This bad boy took care of all of my problems.
Manufactured by Channel Well Technology (CWT) and customized to Corsair's specifications.
HardwareSecrets pulled more than 1kW from this thing and it still kept over 80% efficiency.
Also, initially these PSUs were branded Gold certified but after many places like HardwareCanucks, HardOCP, Overclockersclub, etc. had tested them some of the PSUs squeaked into Gold territory while others were a tad shy. You are getting a very HIGH silver rated PSU...if you're lucky you may get a gold.
Buy One!
Pros: Quality and price if you get it on sale. Looks great, nice paint, wiring, boxing, fast shipping with NE, quiet, cool just s great PSU
Cons: It's big, was not able to place the lower fan. No other cons
Overall Review: The HX series is a great option for serous PC builders. You really cant go wrong. Corsair also has a great RMA program and does not require a receipt
Pros: Modular cables!
Less clutter
Secure connections
Stable and consistent power
Cons: None
Overall Review: While there is a premium on modular PSU's, they are definitely worth it. Removing the unused cables just reduces the clutter.
I don't get in to testing the volts and rails, but I can tell you that I've had this running with 2 different systems and a few Nvidia cards all without a hiccup.
I would not hesitate to look at buying another one from Corsair for a future build.
Pros: >Modular Cable Design allows for using only what you need; leaves a lot of room for space and temperature control.
>Fan is Q-U-I-E-T!!!
>And it gets the job done with a nice buffer zone.
Cons: >None, other than the fan is so quiet, I tend to find myself becoming interested as to if it is working or not, ha, ha.
Overall Review: >Comes with a really, really nice sticker/emblem, hooray!!
>About that buffer zone, it comes in handy when I decide to play Crysis (which makes my room warm, ha, ha).
Pros: Quit, easy to hide cables, long warnity.
The PSU is running an high end gaming system and was used to replace a 750W Corsair PSU that was not able to power on the system once I added the ROG Bluetooth. (other wise it worked well)
Overall Review: PSU failed bad. Some caps went KA-BLEWY.
Corsair honored warranty with NO problems.
I sent the unit back in original box with all components (cost $25) Corsair concurred and have sent me a NEW replacement.
A guy can't ask for more then that
