QNAP TS-251-US Diskless System 2-Bay Personal Cloud NAS with HDMI output. DLNA, AirPlay and PLEX Support

Pros: Reliable file server.

Cons: Real problems with the extra services QNAP claims you get with this box. Stuff just doesn't work too well.

Be wanted, Surveillance station only records to your first logical volume and you cannot change this. Also encodes files as q264 which nothing will play. You will have to replace every instance of q264 with h264 in the video file to make it playable.

Video playback is awkward and the iPhone, Mac and Windows client apps are poor.

I've even had an "Unknown Error" when trying to delete a folder with the File manager.

This NAS does do as much as is promised. As you use it you will keep hitting walls you will need to work around.

Other Thoughts: Would it have killed QNAP to include "less" with the built in terminal apps?

Pros: Quiet, small, very easy to upgrade memory, powerful processor for such a tiny server, price, good notifications and server monitoring

Cons: A few rough edges. QNAP cloud setup was turning into more work so I just set it up directly through the LAN. Sometimes its Linux roots show through in some places in the GUI. Nothing more jarring than switching between iPhone and Android or Mac OS and Windows. And some things not fully migrated to GUI and require configuring with text files—like Squid.

Maybe other areas are buggier but what I've been using has been solid.

Other Thoughts: I've been really surprised by how good this unit is. Replaced a Mac Mini server running OS X Server and I'm really happy I made the change. Really like the stats on the phone app. Really like that there are email notifications available for everything. I have not tried the media related apps. The security camera software is working great with an Axis M1011 camera. Very easy to manage shares by users and protocol. Can't believe how much this is doing with just one gig of RAM. 10 years ago we thought Apple would come out with something like this, but then Apple just lost all interest in the server market and Apple keeps on breaking software compatibility with system updates and unpredictably removes features.

This unit is already doing everything I bought it for. Over time may try out the other features. Definitely a winner as a file server / backup repository.

Rosewill RX81-MP-SC- SLV 3.5

  • neweggOwned For: more than 1 year

Pros: Case actually attaches instead of nearly resting on the foot so the case will not fall off as happens with so many hotter designs with feet.

Cons: Really awkward design requires more than 10 screws to mount the drive and assemble.

Uses a 5 pin DIN connector on the power supply.

Other Thoughts: Perforations on front panel are cosmetic and do not help dissipate heat.

Power supply failed and can't find a replacement. Rosewill had no answer when I asked where to get a replacement.
