Pros: Great entry-level virtualization server box.
Cons: Won't make a great file server.
Other Thoughts: Disclaimer - I own the Lenovo TS140. Comparable device.
You don't buy these server to toss a bunch of drives in them. You put ESXI (or Xen, or whatever) and use them as your white box home virtualization lab box. Yeah, they max out at 32GB. But come on. It's under $400. And your storage is on some sort of NAS or SAN device, like a FreeNAS or Synology box.
Pros: IPMI is awesome for management. 4 RAM slots, 4 PCIe slots. Mostly a great board for ESXi.
Cons: Only real issue is that you have to add a custom driver for the Intel 82579LM NIC if you're putting ESXi on this board. Easy to find this information on the Internet. It's a known issue with ESXi 5.01.
Other Thoughts: I was wrong in my below review. Motherboard had 1.11 silk screen, but it does indeed come with the latest BIOS (2.0b) and IPMI (1.86). Only had to have the old Sandy Bridge machine offline for about 20 minutes to find this out. Unfortunately I cannot find a way to edit the prior review.READ FULL REVIEW
Pros: It's normally a fantastic motherboard for servers what with the IPMI.
Cons: HOWEVER, I'm dinging it two stars because even though the 2.0 BIOS motherboards have been shipping for months, NewEgg sent me a 1.11a revision. Now I have to dig up a non-Ivy Bridge CPU to flash it before I can put in the new CPU that was purchased with the motherboard.
Other Thoughts: So be warned. Be sure to have a non-Ivy Bridge CPU on hand to flash this motherboard since NewEgg is still selling the old revision.READ FULL REVIEW
