easiest build ever

MSI 6676-001BUS Intel NM10 Barebone
MSI 6676-001BUS Intel NM10 Barebone

Pros: * Robust quality of construction * Easiest build you can imagine (drive cage is easy to remove and there's plenty of space for hands and fingers to work inside the case) * Takes a 3.5in HDD make it very cost effective as a single-drive 1TB or higher NAS or file server. * Consumes only 21W fully on and idle * Dual core Atom is a nice balance of compute power vs. cost and power consumption for home servers.

Cons: * By default the BIOS tries to boot first via the Ethernet connection (but this is easy to switch off) * No DVI or HDMI out * No eSATA connection

Overall Review: Bought this specifically as a dedicated music server, using Vortexbox (a Fedora core 11 based disto for ripping and serving music). It is pretty much ideal for this task.

Fast upgrade to a speedier notebook

Kingston SSDNow V-Series SNV125-S2BN/128GB 2.5" 128GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid state disk (SSD) Notebook bundled accessory kit
Kingston SSDNow V-Series SNV125-S2BN/128GB 2.5" 128GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid state disk (SSD) Notebook bundled accessory kit

Pros: Comes with all you need to perform a migration without a massive reinstall task. Provides a much faster, smoothing computing experience, especially time to boot and first time loading of any major application. Leaves you with a bonus USB-powered portable drive based on your old mechanical laptop HD.

Cons: All documentation was in the form of PDF files on the supplied CD-R media. Could have done with a quick start leaflet as well. Dell's non-standard DSR (Dell System Restore) and/or Media Direct hidden partitions may cause problems for some users.

Overall Review: Many Dell laptops have hidden partitions for their Dell System Restore and/or Media Direct multi-media players. The Acronis Migration software can mess up to some extent with these kinds of system, as noted in the Acronis knowledge base. In my case I had to do the equivalent of fixmbr or fdisk /mbr to write a standard master boot record to the drive. The automated attempt to copy the Dell-specific MBR as part of the disk cloning operation seems not to have worked properly, forcing me to dig out my Windows installation media to allow booting into my cloned Windows XP installation. This slight panic added about 10 minutes to an otherwise smooth and rapid migration.

Up and running in 5 minutes, fully confiured in 10

BUFFALO LS-250GL 250GB Shared Network Storage
BUFFALO LS-250GL 250GB Shared Network Storage

Pros: Easy to install. Didn't use the supplied software, or read any instructions: just found the IP address from my router's DHCP client table, pointed my web browser there, logged in and configured it. All the screens in the web configuration were self-explanatory. Machine runs quietly, is small and is about as fast as any of the Win XP machines on my home network when it comes to reading and writing large amounts of data.

Cons: None to speak of.

Overall Review: I wish the USB ports on this box could be used to share a USB printer across the network. However, I knew that limitation before purchasing.
